Promise Technology R4 overview

  • 1Description

The Promise Technology 8TB Pegasus2 R4 is a Thunderbolt 2 RAID storage array designed for simultaneous streaming, editing, and backup of high-resolution videos and large multimedia files. This storage array's Thunderbolt 2 interface offers high-speed connectivity. The Pegasus2 R4 stores up to 8TB of data spread across four 2TB 7200 rpm SATA drives. Actual storage capacity will differ according to the RAID configuration. These drives are hot-swappable for easy access and come pre-configured in RAID 5 mode, which is optimized for data protection, capacity, and performance. RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, and 10 are also supported; each level offers configuration options for capacity, data protection, redundancy, and speed.

The Pegasus2 R4 storage array has dual Thunderbolt 2 ports, one port for direct system attachment and another port for daisy-chaining up to 6 Thunderbolt 2 devices. This storage is formatted in the HFS+ file system for Mac and is compatible with Time Machine in OS X, which automatically backs up your entire Mac system.

Thunderbolt 2
The Pegasus2's Thunderbolt 2 interface is sufficient for handling and accelerating 3D or 4K (UHD) workflows. Thunderbolt 2 uses the same cable as the previous generation but has double the available bandwidth for a maximum throughput of 20Gb/s.
4K Workflows
The bandwidth of Thunderbolt 2 and the Pegasus2 is designed to give professionals the ability to edit and view live 4K streams while backing up the same file to a single or daisy-chained Pegasus2 storage array system.

    Promise Technology R4 reviews

    8TB Pegasus2 R4 Thunderbolt 2 RAID Storage Array is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 33.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Speed I purchased the R4 as a diskless unit and loaded it with 4 one TB Velociraptor drives. Hooked up to my MacBook Pro as a RAID 0 array, Blackmagic tests it at around 800MB/sec. It will eventually be hooked up to my new Mac Pro whenever it comes in, and will be used to store my iTunes movies and music. I've owned an old R6 (Thunderbolt 1) for over a year now, and have yet to have a single problem with it hooked up to my old iMac, so I am very confident in the reliability of these machines. They are expensive, but if you want/need the speed and capacity, it's worth it. They are also very quiet considering the performance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So good I bought two Great little RAID storage unit. I bought my first one in early 2015 and have not had a single problem with it. Bought this second one a month ago and same fast setup and flawless operation. TB2 speeds are very fast. I'm editing huge 5k R3D projects in FCPX without proxys off this unit and I very rarely feel any slowdowns. Setup is literally plug it in and wait for an hour for it to initialize, and then it's ready to use. With RAID5 you get 6TB usable from the 8TB of included drive space. B&H shipping is very quick as usual. I think I received it in 2 days, even though it said 5 - 7 days expected delivery. Worth the money.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Difficulty with set up but working now This is now attached to a 15 MB pro with retina screen whilst awaiting a new Mac Pro. On first installing everything worked just fine in its default RAID 5 format. However on subsequent restarts the computer no longer recognised the drive - big problem. Not very much help from Promise! I figured out the best was to reformat the array using Mac's Disk Utility (lost all the data that I had taken hours to transfer to the array). I then changed the array to a RAID 0 set up (which I wanted anyhow) and everything has been OK since. On shut down and restart the drive behaves as it should. It is lightning fast but not as quiet as hoped - high pitched hum (probably fan noise)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As promised Plug and Play set up as it's configured (RAID 5), albeit with a wait time for the raid to sync with my computer. The raid goes to sleep with my Mac. The fan isn't as noisy to me as others claim. I went a step further and tucked it into my desk drawer with an open back and I don't hear a thing, and my desktop is not cluttered. I'm really happy with the ease of set up and use, looks to be well built, and works well so far. The lightning bolt cable that comes with it is meant for desktop use, and you'll need a longer cable if you wish to store it elsewhere. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase. Thanks BH for the great service!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast and Solid primary storage I bought the Pegasus2 R4 to use as primary image and data storage for my new 2013 Mac Pro. As a semi-professional photographer who uses a Nikon D800, I need storage that is fast and vast. My Mac Pro has not been delivered yet so I have been testing the Pegasus on my 2012 15 Retina MacBook Pro. Blackmagic speed tests show the Pegasus2 R4 is as fast or faster than the internal SSD in my MacBook Pro. Wow! It's too early to say anything about reliability and durability but, so far everything looks great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pegasus R4 First off excellent shipment by B&H. Everything arrived safely, perfectly packaged and shipped incredibly fast. A+++ This device is AWESOME. If you need redundant storage and have a Mac with Thunderbolt its a no brainer. This device comes formatted as OS X Journaled and setup as a RAID 5 out of the box. I plugged it in and was ready to go in minutes, it does take SEVERAL hours to initialize the device but you can still use it but the performance isn't 100%. After the initialization was done this device is screaming fast, quiet and couldn't be happier. Plus the price on B&H is HANDS DOWN better than anyone else. YES this unit was Brand new!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AWESOME STORAGE AND SPEED Bought the Pegasus2 R4 by Promise Technologies. This unit has thunderbolt 2 connection. one word - AMAZING! so far. it's has 4 - 2 TB's drives for a total of 8TB's . I was able to raid 0 two drives for speed and the other 2 drives I left them as independent pass through drives. The raid shows up on my desktop as one drive and the other 2 as single drives. those single drives are hot swappable which is perfect for my lightroom workflow and back up system. I also purchased the Lacie thunderbolt/USB3 Rugged 256GB SSD bus powered. This drive screams speed. I use this as the work drive for my catalog and files i'm working on at the moment in lightroom. Once I ingest the work I back up the whole file into one of the drives in the pegasus2 system. After several hours of work on the job I back it up again. Great system but it's a bit expensive. All together close to $2000 including tax.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Speed It does the job. It works as advertise. It's fast and a must for any New 2013 Mac Pro user. Using the software is ok. I'm new to setting up my own RAID so the software was tricky. I called Promise and their technical support is a joke. They are rude and are of no help. I had to beg them to help walk me through the steps. (I wanted the unit in a RAID 0. it ships as a RAID5) I have a corner desk so the unit is off to my left. I wouldn't call it quiet or loud. You can definitely hear the fan going.
