Promise Technology R6 overview

  • 1Description

The Promise Technology 18TB Pegasus2 R6 is a Thunderbolt 2 RAID storage array designed for simultaneous streaming, editing, and backup of high-resolution videos and large multimedia files. This storage array's Thunderbolt 2 interface offers high-speed connectivity. The Pegasus2 R6 stores up to 18TB of data spread across six 3TB 7200 rpm SATA drives. Actual storage capacity will differ according to the RAID configuration. These drives are hot-swappable for easy access and come pre-configured in RAID 5 mode, which is optimized for data protection, capacity, and performance. RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, and 50 are also supported; each level offers configuration options for capacity, data protection, redundancy, and speed.

The Pegasus2 R6 storage array has dual Thunderbolt 2 ports, one port for direct system attachment and another port for daisy-chaining up to 6 Thunderbolt 2 devices. This storage is formatted in the HFS+ file system for Mac and is compatible with Time Machine in OS X, which automatically backs up your entire Mac system.

Thunderbolt 2
The Pegasus2's Thunderbolt 2 interface is sufficient for handling and accelerating 3D or 4K (UHD) workflows. Thunderbolt 2 uses the same cable as the previous generation but has double the available bandwidth for a maximum throughput of 20Gb/s.
4K Workflows
The bandwidth of Thunderbolt 2 and the Pegasus2 is designed to give professionals the ability to edit and view live 4K streams while backing up the same file to a single or daisy-chained Pegasus2 storage array system.

    Promise Technology R6 reviews

    18TB Pegasus2 R6 Thunderbolt 2 RAID Storage Array is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from First impressions I use it primarily to store and access my archive of hd footage, backup my work and system drives. Im happy with the speed i can view and access files, definitely turn off spotlight once this thing starts to fill up to reduce access time. Also good to note, we have a recording studio and the fan hum is loud enough to warrant a closet. I have it in a cabinet and have been checking temperature levels, which up until now is doing fine without the need for additional cooling, but its also winter. One thing i wish is that it would be possible for the thunderbolt to pass through without turning the power on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Review of the Pegasus2 R6 I purchased the Pegasus2 R6 to use with a new Mac Pro (late 2013) for editing 4K video. This drive comes preconfigured as a Raid 5 properly formatted for the Mac. After hooking up the Pegasus2 it automatically begins synchronizations which, for this 18TB array, required about 8 hours. The Raid 5 system is then ready for use. I found the expected high data transfer rates of about 720 MB/sec for this raid system. The Pegasus2 is very quiet in operation producing only a small amount of noise as the disks spin up. During writing to or reading from the array, the system is virtually inaudible. The Pegasus2 can be configured and controlled from the Promise Utility that comes installed on the array. This utility has an excellent interface that allows the user to address every aspect of array operation including the sophisticated power management features of The Pegasus2. The only issue that I had upon first using the Pegasus was that the hard drives were spinning down frequently when not being used for a few minutes. This caused a delay of about 10-15 seconds for the hard drives to spin up when they were addressed. I was able to correct this via commands provided by Promise and entered via Terminal commands directly to the CLI interface elf the Pegasus2. I have been told by Promise that the next version of the Promise Utility will allow this to be done completely from within the utility without the need to use a command line interface. I believe the Pegasus2 R6 is a perfect companion to the new Mac Pro for editing 4K video and other purposes where high data transfer speeds and large disk capacity are required.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A hell of a storage unit! I use this for storing media on a mac pro 6.1 system. It's quiet, high capacity, reliable, and screaming fast. The optional settings particularly for power savings modes are complicated. The Promise Utility app which manages the unit is not the whole story. There also is a command line type interface through terminal (on the mac) which is also used. The two sort of overlap and it becomes a bit confusing as to which to use for what. Net-net, this thing is fabulous. Initial set up takes a few hours to complete even with default settings. Read quick start guide carefully.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A tremendous help to my video production I make videos in Africa. I have about 15 TB of footage that I've accumulated over the past twenty years. Until now it has been almost impossible for me to organize it properly. I purchased the Pegasus2 with 18 TB of storage, and my work has changed significantly. I now can find all of my footage in one place without having to swap hard drives back and forth between naked drive docks. The Pegasus works smoothly, very very quietly, is very easy to set up and get working with. I have not had to change a hard drive yet so I will let you know when that happens. Along with the purchase of my new Mac Pro, this is the best purchase I have made in five years. I very strongly recommend this to anybody who has lots of big files to store.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super fast, heavy duty I finally decided I had to upgrade to something for future-proofing my video editing workflow. The speeds are incredible, around 800mb/s read/write. The set up is very easy, it wakes from sleep very reliably. Comes very well packaged, and with a nice long thunderbolt cable. The fan is louder than my 2013 Mac Pro that is runs on, but it isn't distracting unless your room is dead silent. This beast will last me several years and I feel it's something I can trust.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Yeah, it's fast! This item is used in a small Event Videography company. We had problems editing MultiCam. This Raid System solved all the problems! It's fast, east to connect, and is not software raid! I haven't had it fail, so I don't know how the process is for restoring things, hopefully, it's as easy as setup was!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great RAID I've been using the Pegasus drive for 4 years now. Only had one problem when a drive died but the company replaced and no data was lossed due to RAID structure. This drive is essentially silent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great but need better warranties Pegasus RAID's are great, but they should have longer, and extendable warranties. Ince the warranty is up, if you have a problem? Promise says tough poop. they won't even service the units.
