The black HD Pentax DA 20-40mm f/2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR Lens from Pentax is a high performance standard length zoom lens for K-mount APS-C cameras. Its 35mm focal length equivalency is 30.5-61.5mm providing a versatile and practical range for wide-angle to standard length shooting. It is the first zoom lens in the Pentax Limited Series line and brings with it a durable, weather-sealed body, HD lens coating and an optical design consisting of one ED element and one super-low dispersion element.

The f/2.8-4 maximum aperture enables effective low light shooting and, at the wide-angle end, control over its shallow depth of field for images that place sharp focus on the subject with a pleasing out of focus background. An in-lens direct current (DC) focus motor provides smooth and quiet autofocus action and its Quick-Shift Focus System enables rapid shift from autofocus to manual focus mode.

The lens barrel and the included hood are made from high-grade aluminum alloy, distance and depth of field scales are clearly marked on the barrel and a smooth rotating, knurled ring provides manual focus control. SP (Super Protect) coating on the front and rear lens elements repels dust, water and grease to help maintain peak performance.

30.5 to 61.5mm Focal Length Equivalency and f/2.8 Maximum Aperture

With its 2x zoom coverage of 20-40mm, this lens offers focal length coverage from 30.5 to 61.5mm in the 35mm format when mounted on a PENTAX K-series DSLR. This covers a practical set of frequently used focal lengths and is ideal as a versatile everyday lens. Its maximum aperture of f/2.8 at the wide-angle end of the zoom is effective in low light and provides shallow depth of field focus.

HD Lens Coating

This lens has been treated with the PENTAX-developed HD coating, a high grade, multi-layer coating that reduces unwanted reflection, allowing the user to capture high-contrast images free of flare and ghosting.

DC Autofocus Motor

Shoot discreetly with in-lens, direct current (DC) Auto Focus motor operation for smooth & quiet performance.

Quick-Shift Focus System

The Quick-Shift Focus System allows instant switching from autofocus to manual focus operation.

Weather-Resistant Construction and Durable Aluminum Barrel

With seven special seals to prevent intrusion of water, moisture and dust, this is the first lens of the "Limited" series to feature the PENTAX-original weather-resistant construction. With a handsome and durable aluminum alloy barrel and weather-sealing, this lens is able to perform in almost any shooting condition.

SP Lens Coating

The PENTAX SP (Super Protect) coating on the front and rear lens elements repels dust, water and grease to keep your lens clean and your images sharp.

Optical Design

The ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass and a super-low dispersion glass element in this lens' optics deliver clear, high resolution imagery with edge-to-edge sharpness, throughout the entire zoom range.

Rounded Diaphragm Blades

Enhanced with a rounded nine-blade diaphragm at the wide apertures for optimal optical performance and gorgeous bokeh effects.

Pentax DA 20-40mm f/2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR Reviews

Loving it so far

My old Pentax DA* 16-50mm, which I had bought used, broke again. I really liked it when it worked well, but it is known to develop issues. Instead of getting it serviced again, I wanted to get something different. I considered these three: - Pentax DA 16-85mm, which is something of a workhorse. I am after magic pixie dust, and reliability though. This one has reliability, but I am not sure it has got the magic pixie dust. - The new HD Pentax DA* 16-50mm seems to be well-received, with all reliability issues of the older version fixed. But it is big, bulky, and expensive. - This one, the Pentax DA 20-40mm, is something of an oddity in terms of reach. It is described as a stack of primes, and that got my attention. I also considered the 17-50mm f/2.8 lenses from Sigma and Tamaron, although very briefly, and decided that weather resistance is important to me. After much deliberation, I ended up buying this lens. I am glad I did. This is a really handsome lens. It is not big or heavy. And it actually seems to have that magic pixie dust quality of some prime lenses, although it is a zoom! I like the pictures I've managed to take so far. I am looking forward to taking it somewhere nice.

DA 20-40 Replaces Sigma 17-70 DC for use Pentax KP

Have been looking for lens to replace the Sigma whos only fault was poor balance on the KP. Plus I had the urge to at least own one limited in my lifetime. Build quality of the lens is on par with the old screw mount Super Takamers for those of us old enough to remember the good old days. When no plastics was used in lens construction. So far optical quality on this lens is superb, and beats the Sigma in the common range in my opinion. The Sigma still has a home on my K20. So far I.ve found that the focal length markings are quite accurate. This at this point is a partial review and basic impressions. Will follow up later after I put some time in the field.

Wonderful walk around lens

This lens is a pleasure to use and takes very high quality pictures. As someone else told me, it is like having 2 prime lenses (20 and 40 mm) in one housing. The only problem I had was I initially purchased a 55 mm Tiffen UV filter to protect the lens. BIG mistake. As I learned the hard way, never put a cheap UV filter on an expensive lens. It degrades resolution. I replaced the junk Tiffen with a B+W UV Haze filter and image quality is excellent. See the photo for a crop of images taken at F/2.8 and 20 mm focal length, with No filter and a B+W UV-Haze filter. I can not see any difference. While the Tiffen image (not shown here) was badly degraded.

It's a Pentax Limited. There might have been some sample variation early on, that's why the online reviews are mixed. But a good copy is stunning! It's even better on the K3 III. These two were made for each other! Great focal length as well. Perfect normal zoom.

Absolutely love this lens

It has not left my KP since I received it. Pictures are very sharp edge to edge at all focal lengths. I'm very pleased with how close it can focus so I can get relatively wide close up shots. Even at small apertures it is very sharp. The sundial in the photo was taken at f/16. It was cropped to 8x10 plus a minimal additional crop. This object is 2 1/2 in diameter. Not sure about hello kitty settings (forgive me for the subject matter )

excellent and economical

Pentax recently dropped the price for this lens and as such, it is now a very good and economical choice as a mainstay lens. The optics are excellent, the weight is good, even though it is metal ( a good thing ) and it just works. If you wanted an alternate to the much more expensive DA* 16-50 lens and could accept the slightly reduced range of this lens, then this should be a top consideration.

Purchased this with for a K-70 (I'm an amateur / dad photographer). Really love this lens. Zoom and aperture are great for both portraits and group shots. Perfect for group settings -- the perfect lens for get togethers like backyard BBQs. I added a UV filter to make wiping off the end easy which worked out well when I had a splattering of rain interrupt my afternoon. Quality of build it great as well. This lens will be in my kit for awhile.

question

What is this lens' build quality? Made of plastic or metal?
Asked by: Jefferson A.
As far as I can tell, it's all metal, and if not, the build quality, and overall feel in-hand is excellent. Manual focus, however, is electronic (by-wire), which isn't as responsive, but that's par for the course.
