Steadicam CURVE-BK overview

  • 1Description

The black Steadicam Curve a gimbal-based handheld stabilizer for GoPro HERO, HERO2, HERO3, HERO3+, and HERO4 action cameras. It requires the LCD BacPac for proper balance and monitoring.

Once properly balanced, the Steadicam Curve is designed to allow you to capture extremely smooth shots without restricting your range of movement. Since the HERO models the Curve is compatible with lack optical image stabilization, a mechanical stabilizer such as this is the only way to truly avoid shaky footage when shooting handheld, and it can also help reduce some of the motion-induced "jello effect"--wobbly, distorted video--caused by the GoPro's "rolling-shutter" CMOS sensor.

The Steadicam Curve is a scaled down version of its bigger sibling, the Merlin, its size and form-factor designed to be in keeping with the compact, dynamic nature of the GoPro camera. When not in use, the handle tucks away beneath the camera mount, locking to the frame. In this folded configuration the Curve acts as a handle allowing you tote the camera around and can even function as an alternative camera rig for those shots where a handheld look is desired without sacrificing the control a rig provides.

Mechanical gimbal designed to fully isolate the GroPro from handshake and vibration
Helps reduce the "jello effect" caused by the GoPro's "rolling shutter" CMOS sensor
Compatible with GoPro HERO, HERO2, HERO3, HERO3+, and HERO4 action cameras

Steadicam CURVE-BK reviews

Curve for GoPro HERO Action Cameras (Black) is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 46.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from READ BEFORE BUYING This product has SEVERE limitations, especially with the newer gopro models. This was made to work with the Hero 3 with the LCD backpack attachment. Any other model will require you to buy some wieghts to balance properlly. However, if you are using the Gopro Hero 4 Silver, the wieghts that tiffen sells to accompany this will COMPLETELY block the screen. This is not stated anywhere on the purchase page, it just says it's compadible. Really you are going to want access to the screen. Your best bet is to add your own wieghts around the screen rather than buying the wieght kit. You can find wheel balancing wieghts pretty easily that are self adhesive, just attach them onto a housing door that you are not using. The amount you want is 40g for the Gopro 4 silver. Most wheel weights are 5-10g, so it's pretty easy to add a strip of 4 and still be able to see the screen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great tool if you take time to practice! I use the Steadicam Curve to shoot mostly sports and especially mountain biking. The Curve gives me the shots I am looking for but definitely takes time and practice to manage the device. The technique for keeping the camera straight and managing the proper angle takes a varied approach. I use one hand for most fixed shots and control the angle and orientation with one finger and thumb. However, for video where I will be moving I prefer the two-hand method. While you will be able to shoot better with the Curve, it will take time to master so don't give up on it if at first you don't succeed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You will not be dissapointed! I wish I had known and purchased the Curve Steadicam for GoPro before my 8-day cruise to the Caribbean. I collected a lot of unusable footage due to the shaking and unstable recordings. Now that I've purchased the Curve for GoPro, I can not believe the difference. It is night and day! The Curve is actually super simple to operate and there was, at least for me, little or no learning curve to shooting stabled videos. I've tested it running up and down the stairs, walking on hard pavement, and playing with my dogs in uneven terrain with great results. Balancing the GoPro on the Curve was simple, even though I don't have the required LCD unit. Instead, I am using the battery pack (Model ABPack 301). I have sufficient range with its fine-tune adjustment to make it lean forward or backward past its balanced-point. I also found it to be lightweight and not tiresome to use even after extended periods of time. It is smaller than I expected and indeed, I would most definitely recommend the Curve Steadicam to my own brothers and sisters.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A bit flighty I had a decent time setting the balance as instructed. So far I have done some practive movements across the room with a stationary object as my target. Using the thumb ring is easy enough but the slightest variance in pressure throws this device into a wild tizzy. I need more practice. If there was a method for dampening the float it would be perfect. For the money (Black friday sale) its a great product, but at full price I would lay down some more bills for a more expensive product. I love the design, compactness and the locking handle is nicely implemented.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A little tricky, but a lot of fun I love the compact design and have gotten some wonderful shots with the device. The one handed operation and tiny footprint allow me to operate in a crowd without people noticing. I've found that the Curve works best when I'm only grasping the handle and not touching the gimbal with thumb and forefinger to pan and tilt (as instructed). I pan by moving my arm and body. A little awkward, but so far has worked. I'm getting much better with practice, though. Outside the Curve is very sensitive to wind. Works better on interiors or on calm days, though that can be said for any Steadicam, to some extent.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from SMOOTH!!!!!!!!!! I bought this Steadicam right after my Hero4 Silver GoPro Camera, I was disappointed with the performance and did a search online to find out what I was doing wrong, since it is been awarded big time; then I ordered the weight kit necessary to balance Hero4 cameras in some configurations. It works FENOMENAL!!!!! for such a tinny Steadicam. The weight will block your display. I think Tiffen should create a balance weight to be placed at the quick release mount and not at the back of the camera with a Velcro strip. And that is why I gave 4 stars.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Steadicam Curve Poor handle material, good for indoors activities. Don't recommended for outdoors it's very sensitive for the wind.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Big step up from shooting handheld. I bought this after coming back from a mountain climbing trip in the Philippines and seeing most of my footage was really shaky. I wanted something I could easily take on hikes and on travel that could fit in my pocket. I had the chance to take it out last weekend on a trip to Death Valley, and while the footage I got wasn't 100% smooth, it was waaay better than the footage I got in the Philippines. It really dampened the vibrations a lot, and any shakiness left I attribute more to my lack of experience than to anything else. I'm sure with practice, my shots will only get smoother. It fits easily in my jacket pocket, and is easy to set up, and the build quality looks really sturdy. Overall, I'm extremely happy with my purchase and I know its not gonna be a piece of gear that's just gonna end up sitting at home when I go out.
