Bower FN58 Overview

  • 1Description

The 58mm Variable Neutral Density Filter from Bower gives you the capability of shooting with high speed film or high ISO settings on your digital camera, even in direct sunlight. ND filters reduce the amount of light that reaches your film or your sensor, and this variable ND filter allows you to choose just how much light you want to block from 2 to 8 stops. To adjust the amount of light, simply turn the adjustable dial for a seamless adjustment.

With the variable ND filter on your lens, you can control both the exposure time and depth of field in your photos. Without an ND filter, most cameras do not have a shutter speed fast enough to allow you to shoot wide open in bright conditions. By adding an ND filter, you can blur your background and isolate your subject, even under direct sunlight. You can also shoot very long exposures which is useful for landscape and architecture photography. Exposing your shot for a long period can make people, clouds, cars, and other moving objects seemingly disappear from your images.

    Bower FN58 Reviews

58mm Variable Neutral Density Filter is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 27.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what it should be. I own several VariND filters from different manufacturers and for different filter threads. This one stands out. Unlike filters from Hoya, the Bower does not have infinity spin i.e. the ring stops rotating beyond the points where the filter stops changing. That makes it so much easier to manage because I don't lose track of the ring marker. What also separates this filter from others is it doesn't have that infamous X distortion in the darker setting. Not even at the darkest! Nor does it distort colors. There were no threading issues. I bought it for a couple Canon kit lenses that I use for a Canon DSLR and Blackmagic Pocket. I highly recommend. No need to spend more on a filter that couldn't possibly be better.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Should be called blur filter Once put on, you will not get a sharp image. Even in the middle range when images are not totally blurry, shots are unusable. Don't waste you money or your time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great buy! Great item for the price! Love using this with off camera flash and a great background in my portraits! No color contrasts and easy to use. Wish it had a dial that gave the stop amount instead of little squares. I like how it's made of glass and metal, very sturdy! I would recommend this to anyone!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Price Point and Reliable The varial ND is very easy to use and stays at the desired setting. The only downside is that the 58mm lens cover is too small for the filter once the filter is set on the lens, so you'll have to grap yourself a larger lens cover in order to keep the filter clean and free of damage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Its Perfect! As a professional photographer I never used ND filters as I just used high speed sync when shooting with flash. ?When I made the shift to video and needed to shoot wide open this was my first purchase. ?Ive constantly read that you get crosses on your screen with other ND filters and weird vignettes, and to be honest this has given me zero issues or picture issues. The variable ring is smooth but tight enough to still man handle a camera and not have it sliding around. Thanks B&H, amazing service as always!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great filter! Love it in studio! Great filter! Love that it allows me to shoot wide open even with strobes in studio! Packaging it arrived in was damaged but the filter itself was fine luckily.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad magenta tint I bought one of these and when I tried it, it would turn a strong magenta near and at the maximum density. I thought it might be a 'once off' and had a replacement sent. Same results. I've sent the replacement back for a refund. That said, B&H is the greatest in dealing with problems like this. Returns were without issue - friendly folks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compared to Heliopan Just upgraded to Heliopan and was comparing that one with this Bower, and was not noticing any dramatic difference shooting 4K 10bit video on my GH5. Definitely returning that Heliopan with its pricetag 6x that of this Bower. I understand Heliopan is higher quality glass, but I wasn't seeing anything in the footage to justify the cost. Planning on sticking with Bower now.
