Bower VND Overview

The 67mm Variable Neutral Density Filter from Bower gives you the capability of shooting with high speed film or high ISO settings on your digital camera, even in direct sunlight. ND filters reduce the amount of light that reaches your film or your sensor, and this variable ND filter allows you to choose just how much light you want to block from 2 to 8 stops. To adjust the amount of light, simply turn the adjustable dial for a seamless adjustment.

With the variable ND filter on your lens, you can control both the exposure time and depth of field in your photos. Without an ND filter, most cameras do not have a shutter speed fast enough to allow you to shoot wide open in bright conditions. By adding an ND filter, you can blur your background and isolate your subject, even under direct sunlight. You can also shoot very long exposures which is useful for landscape and architecture photography. Exposing your shot for a long period can make people, clouds, cars, and other moving objects seemingly disappear from your images.

Bower VND Reviews

looking good

Bought the Bower as a 2nd choice option when my first choice was out of stock because I just need a variable ND filter for the extreme brightness we encounter outside in Aruba (Caribbean) versus the more regular light situation in interior settings for documentary/follow-style video shots. I have only done some test shots, and up to now the only down side is that the lightest stop is a bit darker and the darkest is a bit lighter than the other filters I have - but on a whole it does the job better than not having a filter at all and the colors seem to survive nicely. And with some adjustments in the other settings it should not be too much of a problem.

Great for daytime shooting, I do a lot of thunderstorm photography, and this gives me that extra F-stops for capturing storms with time exposure!

Serviceable enough

It was liberally coated in oil fresh out of the box. I guess they wanted to make sure it was well lubricated. It does make your fingers all oily when using it though. Actually using it, its perfectly usable as a variable ND filter. It does create some slight checkering effect on the bokeh, its hard to explain unless you see it yourself. And the transition between the different ND levels is mostly smooth, up until you get to the max setting. Then your entire image just abruptly turns black. For casual photo or video work, its good enough as a starter variable ND.

Affects image quality way too much!

Sharp turns to soft pretty quick when you throw this filter on.

Don't spend more on a VND

This is the one to get. Don't waste your money trying to get rid of the VND black X by buying a more expensive filter. The black X is a physical property of all VND systems. It is unavoidable and you can't improve or eliminate it by spending more money. The intensity and appearance of this effect is dependent only on the density range of the filter, the field of view of the lens, and the density to which you have the filter set. For any given filter, if these factors are equal the black X effect will be the same. If you need more density on your wide lenses without the X, buy a pair of filters with complimentary density ranges. The smaller range sets will have better performance at higher densities. As for this filter, it's excellent. Multicoated so it won't add weird reflections and ghosts. No unwanted soft focus effect from cheap glass. No noticeable color cast on Portra 400 in daylight or tungsten. Great density range. Slim, so no vignetting. Turns smoothly and feels good to use. Ticks every box, can't be improved upon.

works very well. the max density seems to be much more than 8 stops, only thing wrong with it is that its hard to get it exactly on the stops so it can be difficult to calculate a predetermined exposure

Does this filter have a hard stop at each end of the range? My 62mm Bower variable ND does, just wondering if this version does as well. Thanks.

Sorry it took so long to get back with you. Yes, you cannot turn beyond the extremes on each end. There are hard stops.

question

What size cap will fit this filter?
Asked by: Anonymous
I contacted a technical Rep with Bower, and he tried it with both a standard type 52mm lens cap, and also the newer design many manufacturers are using with the center-pinch type and both fit without issue. I'm not sure what that comment in the customer reviews may have been experiencing but it will hold a standard 52mm lens cap.
