Sound Devices 633 overview

  • 1Description

The Sound Devices 633 6-Input Field Production Mixer and Digital Recorder is designed for production audio mixing and recording on set and in the field. The unit is housed in a compact lightweight molded metalized carbon-fiber chassis and features six analog inputs: three XLR microphone preamplifier inputs with selectable phantom power, high-pass filters, input limiters, faders and variable pans, as well as three line-level TA3 (mini-XLR) inputs. The first XLR input can also function as an AES digital input and accept AES3 or AES42 inputs with +10 V phantom power for digital microphones. The two XLR outputs can also be used as four channels of AES output.

All of the unit's inputs can be assigned to the mixer's six output buses: left, right, Aux 1, Aux 2, Aux 3, and Aux 4. Selectable input delay on all six inputs and output bus delay on all six buses makes it easy to correct lip-syncing issues between audio and video. The unit's 1/4" headphone output can be configured with different user-presets and a favorite mode allows for quick source selection when monitoring.

The device can record to an SD card, CompactFlash card, or both memory card formats simultaneously in mono or poly WAV or MP3 file formats. The cards can be set to record redundant backups or combinations of WAV and time-coded MP3s for dailies and transcription purposes. The six inputs, output bus left, output bus right, aux 1, and aux 2 can all be recorded to individual tracks at 24-bit 48 kHz resolution for a total of ten tracks. This is useful for having both individual tracks from the six inputs, as well as the recordist's field mix. Up to six tracks can be recorded at 24-bit 96 kHz and 192 kHz sample rates.

The device can be powered by any of four different simultaneously coexistent power sources, including 12 to 18 VDC from an external power supply (sold separately), two removable 7.2 V L-type lithium-ion batteries (sold separately), and six internal AA batteries (NiMH recommended, sold separately). The unit's LCD display indicates battery levels for the various sources. When one power supply is depleted, the mixer will automatically switch to the next power supply without interruption. When all power supplies are depleted, the device's built-in PowerSafe trickle-charge battery will keep the device running for an additional 10 seconds so that all files can be saved and closed properly and ensure that no data is lost. The built-in battery also allows the device to power up and start recording in two seconds for near immediate operation.

The unit is built with dedicated ergonomic controls for all major mixing and recording functions and features an LCD display that can be viewed in all types of lighting. The background of the display can be changed in the menu settings between day and night modes to make the meters easier to read. An integrated high-accuracy Timecode generator supports all common rates and modes. A USB port allows for the connection of a computer keyboard for easy entering of metadata to better organize files. The unit is built to be durable in the field, and includes gasket seals to protect the internal circuitry from the elements.

Note: Please note that not all memory cards are approved to work with this device. Please check manufacturer's website for a list of approved cards.

    Sound Devices 633 reviews

633 6-Input Compact Field Mixer and 10-Track Digital Recorder is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sound Devices - Professional Grade I am a professional location sound mixer and have used Sound Devices products now since the company's inception. IMO, this little mixer is, by far, the best little mixer-recorder out there. It's capabilities and applications are staggering; it's feature set perfected over time. The 633 is built like a tank and it's analog preamps are among the best in it's class. 6-inputs are perfect in order to keep the small footprint and, quite frankly, more inputs are beyond the scope of what a portable field mixer should offer without linear faders or auto-mix features. 10-track recording, time code, dual card recording, Wi-Fi expandability... What more do you need? Seriously.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pleasure to Use. This is a fantastic mixer recorder. Love the flexiblility in routing options for outputing sound. The battery life is amazing with two sony L NPF-970, it took about 12 hours to empty one battery. The buttons are well placed and the faders are super smooth. Excited about using the wingman app. The menu system was easy to learn. Issues have been when playing around with file names, like changing file names, the system sometimes locks up and asked to be powered cycled. Overall the ease of use, build quality and functionaly is a major step up. Compared to using an zoom H6 and ipad Metarecorder

Rated 5 out of 5 by from the perfect mixer for small productions This has all the features that I need for narrative location sound, and is future proof with AES support for digital microphones like the SuperCMIT. 3 Mic inputs and 3 line inputs are perfect for a single mic and a stereo array plus 3 wireless lavs. The menus are easy to navigate, and although it supports a USB keyboard I haven't needed one, the take manager is fast enough that nobody is waiting on me. Of course the sound quality is wonderful, but the thing that I like the most is the power. The options for powering this are extremely flexible, and I'm not worrying about the batteries running out anymore. I also like the ability to record to two different cards simultaneously. Overall this is a beast and I highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gotta love the times we live in I'm a full-time sound dude. I just shot a reality pilot with this thing for a full week, used timecode, all six inputs and ran it for 16 hour plus days. It's a true work horse, it's light and it's super easy to use out of the box. I've tried all the little gizmos as well - connecting to the 788t, jamming, the keyboard metadata funfest, etc. and have giggled like a little boy when I see the glorious metadata in my edit bay. Looking back, I would absolutely buy the kit. I thought I could acquire batteries, TA3 cables and other nicnacs al-la-carte for a lot less. Wrong. You can NEVER have enough cables even if cables from Sound Devices come at a premium. B and H reviewer top tip: Read the instruction manual while playing with the thing. You'll be pro by page 10.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A work of art! The geniuses at Sound Devices have developed a truly revolutionary piece of gear with the 633. It has proved to be a powerful workhorse for our corporate and documentary productions, allowing us to record multiple mics simultaneously to its 10-track recorder, mix out to our cameras and provide timecode with its built-in Ambient TC generator. Battery power is amazing and the unit will last all day with just a couple of Sony NP-F970s. Love the dual recording ability to CF and SDXC cards for added peace of mind. Just an awesome and reliable product that is such a joy to work with in both the field and studio!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The 633 I saw this advertised, saw how great it was and knew it would include a $$$pendy price tag. Then again what item from Sound Devices doesn't cost thousands. Happy I went 633 instead of 7 Series.-Killer menu-Mixing tracks -Much lighter than I imagined -It Eats AA alive so get the Sony batteries. (only last 20-30min on six AA) -And finally its even cooler in personI use this with the MikTek C5 studio pair mics to record dialogue for movies. No complaints.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Mixer. Fantastic Recorder We use the SD633 on commercial video shoots in Wisconsin, in both extreme cold and hot and humid. We use it as master timecode clock for a RED Dragon and sync in post. Although this adds an extra step to our workflow, it's not really a significant issue. Build quality and durability seem excellent, and we have yet to run into a single issue. Audio wav files coming out of it are incredibly clean, and having dual card slots just gives extra peace of mind. We have a working SD card as primary, and a smaller CF card, which basically stays in the recorder until a time when we might need it as backup. That has never happened. Not the lightest mixer in the world, but that comes along with build quality, and I'd take a few grams more to know that it's going to last under pressure in the field. All of SoundDevices products I've used in the past have been exceptional, and this is no different. Mark http://shiftvisuals.com

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Workhorse ! :-) POSITIVE ATTRIBUTES: > Have been using for location dialog recording with excellent results! > Superlative interface and control layout > Very rugged > High mechanical quality > Meters very easy to read > Excellent feature set > Dual recording media is an excellent feature! > Stable and bug free firmware > Accommodates high capacity Sony NP-F batteries! > Subjectively pleasing sound quality for dialog recording POSSIBLE SHORTCOMINGS: > Limiting is not as transparent as it could be (as compared to the Zaxcom Maxx for example) > No lower compression ratios are offered > No low to moderate compression ratios available > The list of compatible recording media is very short! (SD and CF cards) > Audio fidelity and overall distortion figures are not good as the Sound Devices 700 series, nor are they as good as the Zaxcom Maxx. This is especially noticable (to my ears) for binaural or stereo recordings of ambient sounds and music recordings, in which stereo imaging and/or complex reflected sounds are a prominent feature. > No high pass cutoff frequencies below 80Hz
