Sony 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 overview

  • 1Description

A top pick for users looking for a lightweight all-around zoom, the FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens from Sony is a great go-to for full-frame E-mount shooters. The lens uses a variable f/3.5-5.6 maximum aperture range in order to achieve light weight and compact size and incorporates one extra-low dispersion element and three aspherical elements to minimize aberrations throughout the range. Also, it has a linear motor and internal focus that enable fast, reliable autofocusing. On top of this, the lens offers built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization to combat the effects of camera shake. Additionally, it is dust and moisture resistant and is equipped with a seven-blade circular diaphragm for smooth bokeh.

Designed for full-frame E-mount cameras, this 28-70mm covers a versatile wide-angle to telephoto range. It also works on APS-C format cameras where it provides a 42-105mm equivalent focal length range.
One extra-low dispersion glass element is featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
Three aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
An internal focus mechanism and linear motor contribute to faster, more responsive system and easier handling.
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Sony 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 reviews

FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 37.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good lens This lens came with the a7ll I bought and for the while it was the only E mount lens I owned. I am a bit of a pixel peeper but I have to be realistic about the photos I take. Difficult light conditions and improper camera settings cause far more photo imperfections than the optics of this lens. I take a lot more landscape and wildlife photos during hikes and trips than portraits and indoor shots. The weight of the A7ll/28-70 combination is also significantly lower than other cameras and lenses I own which makes it pretty good for a hiking or walking around system. I can find imperfections in this lens if I try hard enough but I have to crop in a ridiculous amount to notice them. This is a good lens and unless you spend your days peering at cropped in corners looking for tiny smudges and small distortions you will be satisfied with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Overall, excellent for the price I tested this lens with the Sony a7S. Image quality was good. Not quite as sharp as the Zeiss FE Prime lenses, but above average for a zoom. I do have a slight gripe with the Sony E-Mount lens system as a whole, but that is not really the fault of this lens in particular. Sony uses the focus-by-wire motor inside their lenses while manual focusing, which is terrible for videography. The a7S is essentially made for video, so this is quite counterproductive. The normal mechanical focusing system Canon and Nikon have used for years works perfectly, and if it isn't broken, why fix it? The zoom, oddly, is not motorized -- which just adds to the quirkiness. Aside from this, the lens is quite excellent, especially considering its price compared to other lenses from the same system. Kit lenses often have a kind of taboo nature due to their reputation of being of a lesser quality. However, with this lens, I did not find that to be the case. Thank you for reading.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from More than a Kit Lens, for less than Z We here the term, Kit Lens used often to dismiss the economical lenses that come bundled with cameras as lower quality, and ones that we might use until we buy a real lens. In the case of the Sony FE 28-70mm it has served me very well since the purchase of my A7 body (purchased both separately, used on a forum). In recent testing at DxOMark the numbers were very close between the Sony Zeiss 24-70mm and the 28-70. The Zeiss comes in at almost $ (what!!!). So at roughly one third or less the price (bundled with A7) this lens is a steal. It has both weather sealing (good match for A7 weather sealed body), and Optical Steady Shot image stabilization, both of which the Zeiss lacks. I know that the Zeiss and Sony prime lenses are sharper, but you need to know that this lens is not soft! Also, we all tweak a bit in post processing, so for a final touch a bit of contrast and sharpening will make images from the 28-70 look every bit as good as those from the Zeiss, and all other variables need to be accounted for, as well. Like how well you are focusing, how steady you hold the camera, etc. I just can't justify $ for a normal range zoom and would rather spend that money on the Sony 70-200mm, for instance. In all, I am pleased with this lens. Just a reminder to all - learn all about your equipment and don't be in a rush, and you'll get the best results. There is no magic formula or equipment. In most cases your gear is only as good as the operator. This is a solid performing lens with a lot of capability!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from An OK Lens but don't expect much from it I just came back from a trip where I used it in a wide variety of situations including landscapes where this lens should shine. All I can say - meh, nothing spectacular with this lens. The images are generally flat and uninspiring even in good light. I had to tweak the images too much fro my liking. The lens has a tendency to back focus which I can't abide when it's made by the manufacturer of the camera body - it's inexcusable. If I had to do over again I would skip this lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really good for the price! I've used this lens in a wide range of settings since purchasing it with my A7 in February.I intended to trade it in on a Sony 24-70 f4 when that lens was released, but the first copies didn't compete very well with what I already owned. Therefore, I wasn't surprised when the well-known review site DxO reported only relatively small advantage of the more expensive (2.5-3x more) 24-70 over the kit 28-70 - and that on the Sony A7r 36mp model. This lens is light, and - thanks to its excellent optical stabilization and the outstanding high-ISO performance of the A7 -it even works well in most indoor light. I've used it in travel, where it's a fine walk-around lens, and for closeups at a wedding, and of my new grandson in restaurants. It is not sharper than a good prime lens at an equivalent focal length or aperture. But for the majority of walk-around shooting, at the roughly $ it adds to an kit A7. it's one of the great bargains in Sony FF photography. For a wedding, I rented a 35mm f2.8 Sony, and that lens didn't disappoint me at all. But when I started screening my shots from the wedding in Lightroom, I found time after time when I thought, That's a great 35mm image! - it was as likely to be from the 28-70 as the Zeiss-badged 35mm.Conclusion: It's better value for money than you probably think.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty good for kit - full frame! I really have to say, I'm enjoying this lens - I have other more expensive sony fe lenses and while they are good, I can't say they all outshine this one for everyday use. On the a7ii it's great - colours are spot on, and even in low light it's pretty good! the attached photos are straight our of camera, no editing.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from An OK kit lens but not much more This is a decent kit lens but not much more. I got it because it came with my A7SII for almost nothing. I usually film in under-lit stables and riding houses and I've compared this lens on 70mm with my Sony 70-200 4.0 zoom (also on 70mm). Since light is scarce I shoot with the lenses wide open or close. Both lenses does not really cover shooting riding lessons me. 70 mm is just not wide enough and not just tele enough. A 50-135 would actually be the perfect zoom, so I've tried both in different situations. And this also exposes the 28-70 zoom's real shortcomings. It's fair as a wide-angle lens but as a short tele there is much missing. Wide open on 70 mm it's unsharp even in the middle of the frame and worse at the edges and contrast is below average. It gets better if you step down the aperture but since it's 5.6 wide open this is not a lens for low light situations. The 70-200 zoom really outshines it, you don't have to an expert to see that. And I don't advocate the 70-200 zoom as an alternative, just as a example of a much better lens and the same focal length (70 mm that is). So if you expect to use it as a wide-angle in not to low light, and can get a good deal as a kit lens it's OK. If you intend to do serious work in the 50-70 mm range and in lower light it's not going to deliver.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Performs well above pay grade. I went a little legacy/manual lens crazy (50mm and 135mm Minolta MDs and Mitakon 50mm f/0.95) after purchasing my Sony A7 body recently and decided I needed to settle down and get a respectable AF/zoom/IS lens and this had good reviews and was quite reasonably priced. Imagine my surprise when this lens immediately proved itself to be way more capable than I expected. Quick to focus, nice colors, and sharper than any kit zoom has business being. I had thoughts of getting the Zeiss 24-70mm later, but that went out the window. I came from M4/3 and APS-C and this zoom lens performs close to some (some mind you) prime lenses I have used before. The IS.. OSS... really makes itself apparent in many situations in a good way. There are times where I have been on the verge of flailing to capture a fleeting candid moment that would soon pass and the hit rate has been far above near any lens I have ever owned previously. I admittedly had low expectations, but this lens has earned a permanent place in my camera bag. Also it performs phenomenally when used with the Sony HVL-F32M flash. This lens, that flash and battery grip make up my go to all purpose kit (when I will be in all kinds of lighting and conditions). I am very pleased with this purchase.
