1. under 1' minimum focus distance - thats better than the zeiss 24-70 f4 which is 1.3'
2. 10.3 oz - thats 30% less than the zeiss
3. OSS
4. The lens protrudes and retracts only a few mm so flying this on a gimbal is no problem
5. its cheap - super cheap 2nd hand
6. it doesnt feel cheap, it doesnt feel premium but def not cheap
7. I cant tell the corners are soft but if you can then get a GM zoom or get some primes thats what they are for

I purchased this in late December in a package with the new Sony a7IV because I have no other Sony lenses and wanted to use the camera over the holidays. It focuses accurately and quickly enough for family vacation photos. But on returning home and uploading the photos to computer, the corners and edges were just not nearly sharp enough to meet my minimum standards. I soon acquired Samyang's 35mm f/1.8, and I was able to compare the two lenses. Actually I found there was no comparison. The a7IV is great, and when fitted with the 35mm produces sharp photos across the entire sensor. I sold the Sony 28-70 (at a loss) and do not recommend buying it with the camera. Order one of the other great Sony lenses or top quality third party lenses instead.

I have got some KILLER shots with this lens down in the wider angles of 28 to 40ish. It looks solid for a kit lens, and has helped me get to know my A7iii while I wait to get some beefier zooms. However, I can't say the same for focal lengths closer to 70. The bocah isn't super great, and obviously trying to shoot sports with that much of a increase in aperture across the focal length is far from ideal. However, it's still a good lens to learn the camera with and keep around for more fun/less serious projects, especially at 28mm.
Good Lens for the price!!!

This lens came with my Sony A7III and I use it quite often for portraits and landscapes, nothing on the side of sports or wildlife. Indoor performance is okay if you have a solid light source and you know how a camera and all of its settings work together. I would recommend for any amateur photographers just getting into the field.
So far so good.

So as not to repeat everyone else's reviews, simply put I own two Sony GM lenses, a Sigma Art wide angle, and a relatively inexpensive Tamron mid telephoto for use on mySony a7iv. When I use this lens I don't think "oh, I have the cheap lens on". It performs well and fits in nicely with my other lenses.
Great lens.

Have been a professional wedding and portrait Photographer for over
35 yrs, have been using the 28-70 mm lens for over a year now, I find it
very sharp, yes the bench tests may say other wise, but in the real
world that means almost nothing, I have compared the 28-70 mm to
my other Sony lens, the 90 mm macro, 20 mm wide angle, 24-240 mm zoom, 50 mm 2.5, and I can hardly see any difference, see the
Photo taken in my studio, 70 mm, f-11 60 sec.
