Is a 'switch' all that is necessary to join a computer, two printers and an internet modem , or is a router necessary?
Asked by: Nesanel
A modem, unless it is a Gateway, is a 1 to 1 device. This means it can only communicate with one device at a time. If you have only a modem then you will need a router, which genially have a built in switch, to connect multiple devices. If you are just looking for basic function and nothing fancy the Archer AX1800 is a good choice.

Anyone have experience using this with a Nest wi-fi router? Thanks
Asked by: Tom
The switch does not care what router it is as long as there is an Ethernet socket on the router to connect the switch to. I have two routers at home, one provided by Comcast for internet connection, anther one I bought over the internet. Connecting the Ethernet switch to either one of the routers worked. It basically serves as a multiplexer - to go from one socket on the router to four.
