B+W 65-076613 overview

  • 1Description

The B+W 52mm Close-Up +5 SC NL 5 Lens offers the ability to achieve macro-like results with camera lenses that have 52mm front filter threads. A close-up lens is a magnifier that optically decreases the focal length of a camera lens placed behind it. This effect lessens the minimum focus distance between the camera lens and a subject. Magnification can then be obtained by decreasing the distance between the subject and the combined camera lens and close-up lens.

The magnifying power of a close-up lens is indicated by its diopter strength. A close-up lens with a higher diopter number provides more relative magnification, and can be combined with other close-up lenses to increase or fine-tune the macro effect. This close-up lens has a diopter strength of +5. Diopter strengths of +1, +2, +3, or +4 are also available where this close-up lens type's effect becomes progressively stronger with each diopter strength number increase.

To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, each glass surface of this lens includes one layer of anti-reflection coating. B+W close-up lenses are constructed from Schott glass for increased optical clarity. This close-up lens features an F-Pro brass filter ring for durability as well as jamming prevention.

The B+W Close-Up +5 SC NL 5 Lens possesses a front surface with a high degree of curvature and no front filter threads. To combine this B+W 52 Close-Up +5 SC NL 5 Lens with other close-up lenses or filters, it must screwed onto the very top of any combination of stacked close-up lenses or filters.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice close up filter I wasn't overly impressed with the filter but it does allow me to focus at a closer distance and get better close up images than I could without it. There is no replacement for a true macro but this could help get you by for a little while.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for close-up studio shots If you have even basic studio lighting and the time and patience to get it right, this lens is great. Used with the (relatively cheap) Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens, I was able to get shockingly crisp product shots for an online storefront. However, this lens is not ideal for shooting in the field due to the attention it takes in focusing, with the possible exception of some close-up nature shots.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Alternative I bought this filter as an inexpensive alternative for a macro lens. It also works as advertised. You can get quite close to the your subject. With the filter attached you cannot use the minimum focus distance of the lens. I knew that was part of the description before I bought the filter. I would highly recommend this filter and any other B & W close-up filter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for the price I haven't used this extensively just yet, but the test photos that I did were pretty impressive. I have it on the Sony 55 1.8 with the Sony A7 and if you don't want to invest in a macro lens it's a great alternative.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Poor Man's Macro This is a great solution to doing some macro photography for those who don't fancy selling their kidneys on the black market. It's solidly-built and well-designed. My only issue was that it did make my Nikon's autofocus slightly wonky, but it's definitely nothing worth griping about.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great little lens This is a well made single element close up diopter, made from good glass, coated, and a robust brass frame black coated.
