Samyang 14mm f/2.8 Reviews

Strangely good

When you see the price tag you immediately think of this lens as being full of problems, but this one has almost none. Sharp, well built and solid. The only gripe is that the distance numbers engraving on the focus ring can be misleading. Also its perfect at f4 and beyond.

Good Lens

I bought this lens for using it in astrophotography (northern lights, star trails and milky way). I could not afford a wide angle fast lens, so I ended up with this lens. For the price this is a great lens as long as you get a good copy of this lens.

I am still getting used to it. I love the wide angle, for night it is beautiful. Aperture and focus are manual so it is a great practise. Love it.

This is a niche focal length, but if you're unfamiliar to a lens this wide, Samyang is an excellent entry lens. There is a good deal of distortion, but the sharpness and contrast hold up well even to the sensor on a D850.

Okay if you can focus it

I bought this as an alternative to lugging around my 14-24mm AF-S Nikkor, which I mostly used at 14mm anyway. In actual use (as opposed to shooting brick walls), it's hard to tell how good/bad it is because my eyesight makes it so darned hard to focus even with focus aids on the camera. It may find some use for astrophotography, but I doubt I will carry it around for landscapes any more. Still, if you can manage the focusing, it's a bargain for what it is.

Great little landscape lens

Bought this lens on sale because I needed a wider angle for some of my landscape. Was kind of a feeling out for a 14mm and not so much for the lens itself. To my surprise the lens itself takes great photos. Great starter lens for ultra wide angle landscape for those on a budget.

Works as expected and I was pleased with how easy it is to dial in the focal range. I picked up this lens for real estate interiors and have used it with both a full-frame body and an APS-C body. With the full frame body, the focal length is 14mm and it captures nearly the whole room. On the crop sensor, it's 22mm, which hardly has any distortion to correct. The lens is very useful with either body.

Spend the extra and get the AF version

I picked up this lens to practice real estate photography and macro-ish wide angle style shots. Right off the bat I was not pleased with how this lens's focus adjustment performs. To go the full swing from macro to infinity felt like it was never ending. It was geared so low that making a large adjustment was barley noticeable on the view finder without zooming in 10x. For me, this was a deal breaker because a quick change of composition was impossible. If I was shooting film I wouldn't mind the extra time this lens adds to setting up a composition but I shoot on a Sony mirrorless and would like a quicker lens for my taste. If the full focus adjustment was half of what it actually was I would stick with it. Instead I returned it and spent an additional $250 on the AF version. I couldn't be happier with that lens, it was well worth the extra cash for how quickly it locks focus.

Does focus peaking (on a7iii) work when using this lens?
Asked by: Avi
Focus peaking does not work on all manual focus lenses. The Venus Optics Laowa 17mm f/1.8 MFT Lens did not support focus peaking on my Olympus 4/3 camera (company says it supports magnification view only)

Are the markings on this lens accurate? For instance, if you set this lens on infinity for f/8, are you going to be able to determine the hyperfocal distance you are shooting for?
Asked by: George
Yes, to confirm with a reviewers comment; The hyperfocal scale is very useful and I need not use the viewfinder or live view as this lens has an incredible DOF.

I watched a review of this lens that said that the camera does not realize that this lens is on the camera. Thus, the "live view" is not accurate. Is this true on the Sony cameras?
Asked by: George
you do have a live view... with this lens... the only thing that does not have is auto-focus. is a really low price alternative to the other ones, i use it for inside pics of homes, i am a realtor. i use a tripod and use the manual focus while i see on the screen how the pics are going to come out. hope this helps.
