Bolt VB-22 overview

  • 1Description

Featuring a bare-bulb design and an output of 360Ws, the Bolt VB-22 Bare-Bulb Flash is a specialized shoe-mount flash unit that offers users a quality of light similar to studio strobes in a compact, portable package. The bare bulb design provides a full 360° specular light and is able to work with a variety of optional light modifiers, such as an umbrella mount, colored filters, and grids for creating distinct lighting effects.

The unit features a powerful guide number of 262' at ISO 100 and covers about 28mm when used with the included reflector. The flash can also be used as an optical slave at a range of up to 33'. This mode has two settings to control whether to trigger the flash immediately when the master is fired or to ignore a single preflash.

The VB-22 flash also features a stroboscopic, or repeat, mode that allows the unit to fire multiple flashes in a row, meaning users can capture multiple images of a subject in a single exposure. The locking head can rotate 135° right and 180° left as well as tilt from -15 to 90° for added control and versatility. Additionally, the unit is fully manual and offers power settings from 1/1 to 1/128. The flash does require power from an optional external power pack which will provide a recycle time of approximately 0.1 to 5.2 seconds. It comes with a retaining ring, diffuser, reflector, power cable, protective pouch, a stand/tripod mount, a stand mounting foot, and a shoe mounting foot.

    Bolt VB-22 reviews

    VB-22 Bare-Bulb Flash is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful little pack I bough this as part of a kit with the Bolt VB-22 flash. I'm a longtime pro with a lot of different flash systems, but I wanted something that would provide more power than a speedlight but still fit in a small bag. The battery pack is extremely light weight, with a lithium cell that detaches so you can swap out with a fresh one during a long shoot. That said, I've been shooting with the same battery on the original charge for more than a week of mixed assignments and it still shows a full charge. It seems reasonably well made for the price - the connections are solid, though I am careful inserting and removing the cord to the flash.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Get it with the battery pack combo I bought this light with the cyclone battery pack combo and it was an EXCELLENT decision. It is very light weight and versatile. For situations when you aren't shooting on full power for extended periods of time this light is perfect. There are several third party modifiers (octobox, umbrella mount, triggers.) so this light is robust and compact. If you are using speed lights for a lot of your work pick one of these up and get creative! There is a hypersync mode that if you do some research you can utilize (hint-it involves a wireless trigger and pc sync cord) I am pushing this light to its limits and am very pleased with the results. Portability and power output with the hyper sync hack is unbeatable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just WOW! Its a dream - a powerful manual flash WITH A BAYONET!!!, which can outpower direct sunlight, shooting against the Sun from 8-10 ft (with its proprietary 12 dish). 580EX, for instance, does not even come close in a sense of power AND ESPECIALLY recycling time. I use it on a bracket, this is inconvenient, with the battery pack on my belt, which is more inconvinient, the whole contraption is annoyingly heavy (which provides handshake blur once in a while), which is even more inconvenient, but it is nothing compared to a DC power pack with a head with an umbrella on a light stand with a sandbag. Probably it is not the best option for an event coverage, but this is the new era in a staged location shoot without an assistant to take care of the gear. Highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this flash! The VB-22 is like a studio strobe light in the body of a speedlight, albeit a speedlight on steroids. I've owned a few dedicated speedlights over the years and I always found them difficult to use...sometimes they fired perfectly and other times intermittently. And when it came down to it I never liked the quality of light. The images looked like they were taken with a speedlight. This light functions just like strobes, simple to use (especially if you're a studio shooter). It has an amazing range of power setting steps from 1/1 to 1/128. It really makes it simple to dial it in to what output you really need. RESULTS: I love the quality of light from the 4 dish. Very dynamic. I had been look for a flash that could produce those results for a long time and I found it with this flash. I also used the 12 dish and it produces a nice light as well, much more like a large beauty dish or soft box. POWER PACK: Tons of power from the power pack. I've shot off over 500 images and it shows no sign it needs to be recharged. SIZE/WEIGHT: It's a bit big compared to a speedlight and moderately hefty, but I used to shoot medium format with Metz flashes so the bulk/weight do not bother me. I love it so much I bought a second one.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great value for a bright flash, mediocre HSS So far it's been a solid light to have at wedding receptions, and I bought it before hearing about the apparent wonders of Godox. It's really well constructed flash, doesn't feel cheap. Comes with a hot shoe mount that you'll have to screw on yourself. I bought the doubler cable in hopes of being amazed. Barely makes a difference in recycle time. Recycling is horrendous in HSS mode (requires hss-compatible triggers, I use the yongnuo 622s.) A pop at 1/4 power leaves you hanging for a few seconds, which might be ok in studio settings, but in that case you may as well get a real monolight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great flash Own two of those and use them both in- and outdoor in the sunny Caribbean. Very powerful, easy to adjust with remote trigger, small and light weight compared to studio strobes. Long lasting battery and short recharge times. It's like a B2 system (in manual mode) at a fraction of the costs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive If you need power and portability this is it. Its lighter than my alien bee b800 and just as powefull. With the battery pack I'm more mobile and in tight spaces It excells. I packed three of these with the bulb covers on them and all cables, remotes, battery packs and reflectors in a Nikon messenger bag. Its like a portable studio dream come true.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a great tool! I have been using this flash for about a year now. In a sense of price/quality its good, there are options though. But in a comparison by power/WEIGHT its unbeatable! It works in the rain, in the snow, the battery lasts forever, the wireless RC is very reliable and convenient, the flash's bayonet for reflectors is priceless (I use umbrellas or a beauty dish if its windy outside). Please note: it is for portraits. You can't shoot a big group of people against the Sun with it, it is not powerful enough. And, since this is a manual flash, you can't shoot dynamic scenes, its for staged photography. I usually have the flash on a tripod and use either a medium (30-40) umbrella or collapsible 24 beauty dish (Chimaera) or a 16 beauty dish if a wind is too strong (Speedotron sports reflector, I changed the bayonet myself for both). The kit 12 reflector is too small to my taste. What is sold under the name of Interfit is completely the same and everything is totally interchangeable.
