Glyph Technologies SM1000 overview

  • 1Description

The 1TB Studio mini 7200 rpm USB 3.0 External Hard Drive from Glyph Technologies is small enough to fit in your pocket, yet powerful enough to support high track-count audio sessions with data transfer speeds of up to 140 MB/s. It can also save a variety of files including movies, video, music, photos, and more with its 1TB capacity. With a 7200 rpm rotational speed, data can be transferred to and from the drive quickly and efficiently to greatly enhance workflows. Accompanying the enhanced data transfer capabilities, the Studio mini comes with a plethora of connection options including one micro-USB 3.0 port, two FireWire 800 ports, and one eSATA port, making it easy to connect it to nearly any computer configuration. To eliminate the need for an additional power adapter, both the micro-USB 3.0 and FireWire 800 ports support bus power, drawing the necessary power directly from the port, although a dedicated power supply is available as a separate purchase. The Studio mini comes preformatted HFS+ for Mac, but can easily be reformatted for Windows or Linux. Included is a micro-USB 3.0/2.0 cable and a FireWire 800 cable. Protection is provided by a limited 1-year advanced replacement warranty, a limited 2-year level 1 data recovery warranty, and a limited 3-year hardware warranty.

General Features

Time Machine Compatible
The Glyph Studio mini comes preformatted HFS+ with Journaling for Mac and is Time Machine compatible out of the box. A simple reformat is all it takes for the Studio mini to work with Windows systems.
Bus Power
While the Studio mini may be powered using its micro-USB 3.0 or FireWire 800 ports, an external power supply is available as an optional purchase. The Studio mini may not be powered using the eSATA port.
Front Panel LED
The Studio mini front panel has a bi-color LED. The LED will display solid blue when power is on and it will flash blue when there is disk activity. The LED will flash or display a solid red color when error conditions exits with the drive or enclosure. Any error that results in the system state "Halted" generates a solid red LED on the front panel of the drive. All other errors result in the blinking red LED.

    Glyph Technologies SM1000 reviews

1TB Studio mini 7200 rpm USB 3.1 Gen 1 External Hard Drive is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from no power source: renders e-sata useless We use these drives for professional video editing, and have been using the portagig50's for a while before they were discontinued. These new studio minis do NOT come with a power supply, effectively rendering the e-sata ports useless. Sadly, our dozen glyph portagig50 power sources do not fit this newer model. When we called glyph to ask for a power source, we were told that we'd have to purchase one for an additional $15. Now, I respect the fact that glyph is reducing environmental waste by not packaging these with power sources, but I do NOT respect the fact that we're being charged an additional $15 for something that is necessary for the product to function properly. It would be better if the power sources for the previous model (of which we have quite a few) would fit this drive and allow us to use the e-sata ports without investing more time and money into the product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Hard Drive! Glyph always makes quality hard drives with guaranteed performance. The glyph mobile is fast, reliable, and solid. I enjoy knowing that I have a quality hard drive that isn't easily breakable, runs smooth and quick, and is backed with a 3 year warranty including drive recovery from Glyph. I love this product, and I highly recommend it! It's great for anyone who is looking for a mobile hard drive that doesn't need ac power to run, transfers files quickly, is durable, and is covered with a nice warranty.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from seems great I use the drive to transport files from home and the lab... Had a G-Drive before it and after about 9 months that thing started making awful sounds... Someone told me Glyph is the best and so I decided to switch. Don't want to mess around with my files so.... so far it seems great.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A lot less for a lot more Where's the outer protective case. Isn't this supposed to be portable? The earlier version porta gig was more complete with case and power supply. I paid a lot of money this time and got a lot less. I'm not happy!!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I have and shall buy this over and over I use this hard drive to back up my movies and television programs I produce, my photography and other important media. However, I just bought another one to dedicate only to Final Cut Pro media.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so good I like the solid feel of the Glyph product line and the warranty helps my peace of mind. Not the most affordable drive but certainly very sturdy and trustworthy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Power Source Not An Issue Those that say the eSata port is useless because of no power source have not read the spec sheet. You can plug in eSata for data transfer and FireWire for power.
