Zoom iQ5 Overview

The black iQ5 from Zoom is a compact mid-side stereo condenser microphone for lightning equipped iOS devices. It allows for high-quality 44.1kHz/16-bit, mono-compatible audio tracking and is ideal for recording live concerts, ENG, videos and more.

The iQ5 features a rotating capsule that enables it to be used vertically or horizontally with your iOS device. This allows you to record video with your device situated in either standard or landscape positions while ensuring that the audio is recorded with the correct left-right stereo orientation.

The capsule contains two elements including a directional "mid" mic that captures audio coming from the front and a bidirectional "side" mic that picks up ambient sounds from the sides. The stereo width can be set to either 90° or 120°, or you can record the mid and side mic signals as raw data and use Zoom's Handy Recorder iOS app to adjust the stereo width after the fact. The app also allows you to collapse the signal into phase-coherent mono, ideal for voice recordings such as interviews.

The iQ5 allows you to set the recording level of the microphone manually by using the MIC GAIN wheel, or automatically by choosing from three Auto Gain presets: Concert, Solo or Meeting. The unit also features a built-in limiter for protection against input overloads.

Works with iPhone 5, iPod touch (5th generation), iPad (4th generation) and iPad mini running iOS 6.0 or newer
In addition to Zoom's Handy Recorder iOS app, iQ5 can be used with most iOS apps that support audio input from an external microphone such as Apple's GarageBand
Dedicated headphone jack that enables direct monitoring during recording and playback

question

Can I use it when talking via voice call?
Asked by: Jayson E.
The iQ5 takes over the iPhone's microphone function when attached. It serves as a better mike for a phone call, esp for many of us who've been annoyed at the poor voice pickup on the iPhone & end up holding it like a platter so the receiving end can hear. But, no recording conversations. The ZOOM app recording stops if interrupted by a call (incoming or outgoing placed).

question

is there a similar product that will work with both iphone4 (which I have now) and iphone 6 which i'll have in the near future?
Asked by: netalie b.
Hi Netalie, this will only work with iPhone 6 or iPhone 5, because of lightning connector. There is no other microphone exists. This is the best.

question

The instructions say setting the mic to M-S when used with apps other than the Zoom Handy recorder acts like the 120 setting. But wouldn't the M-S settin just record the mid and side signals separately on the left and right channels? I'm hoping that's the case because I'd like to have the option of recording the mid-side signals manually and working with them myself.Does anyone know if it's possible to record the mid-side signals independently with this mic?
Asked by: Anonymous
Currently the mid side record function of the iQ5 is only compatible using the Zoom Handy Recorder App. The width can be adjusted within the App before committing. These files are only accessible within the App and can not be exported individually. Using other Apps with the iQ5 in mid side mode will result in a stereo file at the fixed 120 degree width.
