FUJIFILM XF 56mm f/1.2 R Overview

Perfect for portraiture, the XF 56mm f/1.2 R from FUJIFILM is an 85mm-equivalent prime distinguished by its exceedingly fast f/1.2 maximum aperture for isolating subjects and working in low-light conditions. The optical design employs both aspherical and extra-low dispersion elements, which help to reduce a variety of aberrations, color fringing, and distortion in order to achieve high sharpness and clarity. Prime portrait-length lens is designed for APS-C-format Fujifilm X-mount mirrorless cameras and provides an 85mm equivalent focal length.
Especially bright f/1.2 maximum aperture excels in low-light conditions and also offers notable control over depth of field for using selective focus techniques.
One double-sided aspherical element limits distortion and spherical aberration in order to realize greater sharpness and accurate rendering.
Two extra-low dispersion elements reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to provide greater clarity and color accuracy.
Super EBC coating has been applied to individual elements to reduce lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Internal focusing design affords fast and quiet autofocus performance that benefits both stills and video applications.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out-of-focus quality to benefit the use of selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques.

If you want to take portraits that are absolute bangers, this is your lens. I have taken the best photos of my career using this lens. Bokeh is gorgeous. Stop it down one stop and it's super sharp. Use it on a body like the XT5 and you've got fast auto focus and stabilization. I love this lens. Can't say it enough.

It was a cloudy morning in New York Central Park and this lens did an amazing job to capture this little squirrel. My most favorite pics during my trip to NYC :)

I highly recommend this lens. Don't listen to the reviews about how bad the auto focus is. It might not be the fastest in the line-up, but it's fine, trust me. The sharpness, even at f1.2, is amazing. I love it. It has real character.

A must-have lens

I just switched to the Fuji system and this lens is amazing. Extremely sharp, excellent bokeh, built like a tank but not too heavy. You won't be disappointed with this lens.

Bokeh! Bokeh!

I'm still amazed at how sharp the Fuji lenses are; the 56 f/1.2 is no exception. Close focus is stellar and fast on my X-T3. Best for portraits and prints look amazing, for sure!

Superior lens

Attach it to Fujifilm XT-3, took a shot of myself head and shoulder, project the image to a 65 inch 4K TV, enlarge the image to have my face covering the whole screen, OMG... I saw every wrinkles, and believed that I am older than what I saw in the mirror. This is a super sharp and super fast lens, and I think it's better than all my Nikon lens, and compete to my Zeiss Milvus 85mm F1.4. If budget is not a problem, go get it now, you won't be regret to every penny you spent on it.

Worth It!

Ideally I don't like to start off with the downside of things but let's just get the big elephant of the room. This is not Weather-Resistant (WR) lens. For someone like me that take urban and lifestyle type photography, cannot function with this lens on a rainy or snow day in NYC. However, let's get the upside to this lens. The resolution is amazing, the detail, sharpness and contrast of the images are amazing. Also, it's a versatile lens, both for portraiture and landscape/urban photography. The aperature range is amazing, extremely functional in low-light conditions. Its a staple lens you should have with any FujiFilm X Systems

question

It doesn't have OIS isn't that a problem for blur
Asked by: Anonymous
While the Fujifilm XF 56mm f/1.2 R lens does not have OIS, it has a very fast aperture of f/1.2 that will help significantly in low light situations. The use of a tripod will also aid in preventing blur, such as the Oben AC-1321: http://bhpho.to/1lIw70I

how does this compare with the Voightlander 58mm f1.4 for fuji x?
Asked by: Louis
I haven't yet tried the Voightlander with my XT2 or XT3 though I did try it on my Nikon D750 when I had it. That said, I can only compare my results with the Voightlander 58mm mounted to the D750 against the Fujifilm XT2 and / or XT3 mounted to the 56mm F1.2 . . . On the D750 the Voightlander 58mm rendered soft images wide open @ F1.4. Closed down to F2 and beyond it performed fine. On both my XT2 and XT3 the 56mm F1.2 is plenty sharp at all apertures. Provided that your Fujifilm camera has eye AF the choice is a no-brainer, unless you shoot with Nikon DSLRs too. In which case the Voigtlander might prove more versatile. I doubt I answered your question to the degree you desired, but don't expect a world of sharpness from the Voightlander used at F1.4.

I know this lens is very popular with photographers, but I shoot strictly video on the XT-3. Can anyone share any actual experience shooting video with this lens? I do your classic talking head corporate interview or teleprompter shoots, so the subject is usually sitting, does not move a lot but can lean in or back a little, sometimes is standing on a marker. I've been getting by with the 18-55. I'm torn between this lens and the 50mm. Any insight appreciated.
Asked by: David
This lens works well in low light conditions and is at the top in terms of sharpness. If you are using artificial light on your subject, then very likely you do not need f1.2. Remember you are shooting with a reduced sensor size and not full frame 35mm. This lens therefore behaves like a much longer focal length, such as approximately 85mm. Actual specs on that are described by Fuji or your professional retailer.
