Sony HDR-AS100 overview

  • 1Description

The compact Sony HDR-AS100V POV Action Cam is designed for point-of-view (POV) shooting during action sports including skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, surfing, motocross, skydiving, mountain biking and other outdoor adventure sports. Compared to its predecessor, the HDR-AS30, the HDR-AS100V features a body that is splash resistant even when not in the underwater housing. It supports up to Full HD 1080/60p XAVC S video at 50 Mbps. It also supports other shooting modes including multiple slow motion modes. You can shoot 1280 x 720p slow motion video at 100 or 120 fps, and 800 x 480 slow motion video at 200 or 240 fps. The camera can also capture 13.5MP still images when using the photo mode.

The HDR-AS100V features built-in Wi-Fi with One Touch NFC pairing capability. This means that Wi-Fi and NFC enabled smartphones and tablets can pull optimized movies and photos from the HDR-AS100V without a cable. Once the video is copied onto your mobile device, you can use its 3G or 4G mobile broadband connection to email movies to friends and family or upload your footage to social media sites like Facebook and YouTube. The HDR-AS100V also features built-in GPS, which allows you to add a geographical narrative to your movies and photos.

On top of being inherently splash resistant, for full waterproofing Sony includes a ruggedized waterproof housing with the HDR-AS100V. For added convenience, the waterproof housing has a universal tripod mount. Plus, the camera body includes a tripod mount accessory and it is splash proof as well. The camera's housing is waterproof down to a depth of 16.4' and shockproof from falls up to 5'. The camera is also dirt and dust resistant, which makes it nearly impervious to mud, snow, rain, sand and grime. The HDR-AS100V is equipped with a 170° ultra-wide angle ZEISS Tessar lens and a back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor as well.

Other convenient features on the HDR-AS100V include HDMI connectivity and a built-in stereo microphone for capturing high-quality audio. It's outfitted with a card slot that supports Memory Stick Micro cards and microSD/SDHC cards (a class 10 or higher microSDXC card is required to record XAVC S). The card slot supports expandable external memory for virtually endless recording. To compensate for camera shake that's typical when shooting POV sports action, the HDR-AS100V even features SteadyShot image stabilization with Active Mode.

SteadyShot Image Stabilization with Active Mode
SteadyShot image stabilization allows smooth image shooting while the user is in motion. With the HDR-AS100V Action Cam, the image stabilizer digitally compensates for minute rapid vibrations that are typically caused by bicycle/motorcycle motion.
Splash Proof Body
The HDR-AS100V Action Cam was built with an improved splash proof body (IPX4-class). Enjoy carefree use of the camera outside of its included housing - even in rainy weather or splash-prone situations. With a universal tripod screw mount accessory included for the HDR-AS100V Action Cam itself, you can easily attach the camera directly to a tripod.
Wi-Fi Connectivity for Control and Streaming
The Wi-Fi link allows you to:
  • Control the camera and monitor a video feed from a mobile device
  • Control and monitor up to five cameras using a single, separately available RMT-VR1 Live View Remote
  • When tethered to a device that has an Internet connection, stream live to the U-Stream website
  • Pair the camera with an NFC-enabled mobile device simply by tapping the two together
Shoot Pro-Quality XAVC S 60p (50 Mbps) Video
Pro-quality XAVC S Full HD 1080p recording with a high 50 Mbps bit-rate enables the HDR-AS100V to capture quick action with smooth image motion. The HDR-AS100V also supports 24p high-speed 120 fps and 240 fps shooting with sound. Additionally, users can shoot video in the easily shareable MP4 HD format, which is ideal for the web.
Motion Shot LE Mode
Allows you to capture traces of a moving subject in one image so that it appears to be a continuous picture.
Burst Shooting and Self-Timer
Shoot busts of still photos at up to 10 fps. You can set a timer with a delay of 2 or 10 seconds before the camera starts taking photos.
Plot Location & Display Telemetry with Built-In GPS
Built-in GPS can be used in conjunction with the included PlayMemories Home software to make viewing and sharing videos fun and easy. Location and trail information, as well as speed information, add more layers for analyzing your performance. Location, trail and speed info can even be displayed on your video.
Built-In Stereo Microphone for Quality Sound Recording
The HDR-AS100V Action Cam's built-in stereo microphone allows you to capture all the exciting sounds of your adventure.
Exmor R CMOS Image Sensor
Experience enhanced low-light sensitivity thanks to improved image clarity and drastically reduced grain with Sony's back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor.
Ultra-Wide 170° Pro-Quality ZEISS Tessar Lens
With an ultra-wide angle ZEISS Tessar lens, you can increase your perspective thanks to a 170° viewing angle while you venture out and capture views of dynamic terrain including ski slopes, mountain trails, and more.
Capture 13.5MP Still Images in Photo Mode
Put your HDR-AS100V Action Cam in photo mode and capture high-quality 13.5MP still images with a single press of the button.
Memory Stick Micro & MicroSD/SDHC Compatible
The HDR-AS100V Action Cam supports expandable memory thanks to a memory card slot that supports Memory Stick Micro cards and microSD/SDHC cards.
Built-In Stereo Microphone
A built-in stereo microphone allows you to capture exciting stereo sound to match your adventure.
HDMI Output for Easy File Transfer

    Sony HDR-AS100 reviews

HDR-AS100V POV Action Cam is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 48.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad design for under water Standart under water case cap lens section is not flat. This is the reason under water photo quality very bad. Device has auto focuse feature which is not in go pro. But this feature can not work with standard case cap. Camera can not make focuse with rounded cap. After sending an email to Sony , I see that Sony knows this design error. And their solution is asking you buy a new case with flat lens on the cap. If Sony knows this problem they should mentioned on the box . And we can compare other device cost with knowing this hidden cost. And Sony did not answer my second reply them.IF YOU WANT TO TAKE PHOTO UNDER WATER THIS IS NOT RIGHT CAMERA.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More Sony Action Cam info. This little camera is a lot of fun. After playing with this for the past few weeks, I have found the highest video quality can be produced with these factors: use 1920x1080 60fps mode; use it without the camera housing; turn off steady shot; shoot video in very good light; and mount the camera. Also, if you want great image quality in variable lighting situations, the time lapse function takes great images for high quality video. The Action Cam can get higher video resolution quality with a 64Gb SDXC card. And it will allow more shooting option. But if you don't have the software or equipment to post process, and play back in super high quality, it's not really needed. The 1920x1080 at 60fps is plenty good. IMO, it's almost as good as Tememundo soap opera video quality. If you do You-Tube, 1920x1080 at 30fps is the standard. This little camera is so much fun, I can't put it down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for time lapse I've been using the Action Cam for time lapse and low light night driving videos for the YouTube. The JPEG files are easily enhanced in Lightroom 5, and the image quality is quite good in blue hour and daylight shooting. After I enhance the JPEG in Lightroom, I run them through a video editing software for a time lapse video. Easy to do, and the results are great. This little camera changed the way I do videos.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from SDXC Card Required for XAVC S video. Won't work with any other so don't try buying high speed SDHC cards. On the other hand, mp4 files look really good. I wish, though that the designer had put the controls on the left side like almost all video cameras are designed. Trying to control the camera on a dashboard for example is difficult. Get a spare battery and the lens cover, too. Lots of accessories with the camera so you don't need much else.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great action camera Had to choose between the goprop silver+ and this sony as100v. After testing the Sony I found it so much easier to use and the stabelizer works great. The gps work in iphoto on my mac just like the iphone with a map were it was shot. Just be sure to order the sony micro sdxc uhs-1 which works great in pro mode. Only thing to consider if taking underwater scene is to order the 190 feet case with flat lens ( MPKAS3) or it will be blury. I don't dive so no issue for me but existing case good to 16 feet but bluery under water.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not use under water. I purchased this camera for my 70th birthday. I purchased the optional underwater housing. It is supposed to be good down to 160 feet. I hooked the camera in the housing to a down rigger ball on my fishing boat. The first two times we brought the camera up, the results were exciting. The third time was a disaster. The housing was full of salt water. The camera was dead. The LED panel was grey. The housing looked normal. The latch was locked The O ring looked good. Sony says there is no warranty because it was used in salt water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great action camera I recently purchased the Sony HDR-AS100V with the Sony 64GB SDXC micro SD card. The action cam is used to record Dual Sport Motorcycle trips and thus the important features are:* ease of use* Reliability* Quality - video / audio / overall product* Mounting options* Remote control via iPhone* GPSThe Sony ticks all the above and does them well. The action cam remains sealed in its housing and, therefore, remains unaffected by dust, dirt / mud, rain and bugs.Recording in 1080p/60fps in vivid presents stunning video representation and steadyshot is perfect in assisting in the creation of this amazing picture quality, despite the bumps and jolts caused by off-road trails. On the whole, this is the perfect product for my application, but if there is one thing that I would like to have, it would be that the remote control application on the iPhone also include the GPS signal strength indicator so as to ensure that the GPS signal is being picked up before you start recording. The battery life is fine as long as you have spare batteries on longer trips, but generally a fully charged battery offers 90mins or recording time - more would always be better.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Mixed emotions I was (and am) sorely disappointed in the MP4 video quality of this camera. It is little if any better than my much cheaper Midland XTC.That alone made me very reluctant to purchase a high dollar ($) SDXC card. You have to use a SDXC card to use the PRO mode of the Sony HDR-AS100V. But i purchased one anyway. The difference in the MP4 mode and the PRO mode is night and day. Basically, there is nothing HD about the MP4 image beyond 10 or 15 feet from the lens. In the PRO mode, at 50 yds, you can see the needles on a pine tree vs seeing a blur at the same distance in the MP4 mode.White balance? White balance is not mentioned in the manual. Since it isn't mentioned, i don't know if it exists. If it is AWB, it does not work very well. Shooting from an ATV on a trail in the woods on a bright sunny day, Transitioning from shaded area to a bright sunlit area, you get major white washout. It doesn't last very long, but is very annoying.
