Sony HDR-CX240 Overview

  • 1Description

The black Sony HDR-CX240 Full HD Handycam Camcorder features a 1/5.8" Exmor R CMOS sensor and a wide-angle Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar zoom lens with 27x optical zoom plus 54x Clear Image digital zoom. The CX240 captures Full HD 1080p60 video and 9.2MP still images. SteadyShot image stabilization with Active Mode delivers smooth video, and 3-Way-Shake-Canceling adds electronic roll stability for even smoother results.

Users can monitor and playback footage via the 2.7" Clear Photo LCD display with 230K dot resolution. Dual recording lets you simultaneously capture both high-quality AVCHD and web-optimized MP4 files. The Intelligent Auto mode analyzes your shot and automatically selects the appropriate settings from ten distinct scene modes, with 60 different possible combinations. A built-in USB 2.0 cable provides a connection to your computer for charging or file transfer and fits conveniently into the hand strap, so it's out of the way until you need it. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack, USB AC adapter, micro-HDMI cable, and a USB connection support cable come included.

1080p60 and 9.2MP Still Images
Create high definition 1920 x 1080 60p videos and take high quality 9.2MP still images. Sony's back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor is designed for compact cameras and camcorders. The sensor relocates the photo diodes above the support circuitry, which maximizes the light gathering area per pixel and achieves better results in low-light conditions.
Wide Angle Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar Lens
The lens has a 35mm equivalent of 29.8mm at the wide end of the focal range. Shoot distant subjects with a 27x optical zoom plus 54x Clear Image digital zoom. With Clear Image Zoom the powerful processor compares patterns found in adjacent pixels and creates new pixels to match selected patterns, resulting in higher-quality images. Clear Image Zoom doubles optical zoom for closer photos and video.
2.7" Clear Photo LCD Display
The 2.7" (16:9) Clear Photo LCD features 230K dot resolution for sharp, bright, vivid images, enabling you to change settings to best represent the scene.
SteadyShot Image Stabilization with Active Mode
Compensates for greater degrees of camera shake to deliver smooth video from wide angle to full telephoto shooting. In addition, 3-Way Shake-Canceling adds electronic roll stability for even smoother video capture.
Face Detection with Voice Enhancement and Noise Reduction
Sony's Face Detection technology detects up to eight individual faces and adjusts, focus, exposure, and white balance to help deliver crisp, properly exposed images. It can even automatically distinguish between children and adult faces.
Built-in USB 2.0 Cable
The built-in high-speed USB 2.0 cable provides an easy connection to your computer for charging or file transfer, without the need for a separate cable. It also fits conveniently into the hand strap so it's out of the way until you need it. Charging your camcorder is faster now through the USB; for every two minutes of charge time you get one minute of recording time.
7 Picture Effects for Video and Still Photos
Use Picture Effects to add expression and heighten the mood of your videos and photos. Seven picture effects (Toy Camera, Pop Color, Soft High Key, Partial Color, Retro Photo, High Contrast Monochrome, and Posterization) are available in both photo and video modes. Shooting with these special modes will provide you an easy way to instantly transform your memories without any post editing software needed.
AVCHD and MP4 Dual Recording
Record video in the AVCHD and MP4 formats for high-quality or easy transfer and sharing. For the greatest flexibility, you can even record AVCHD and MP4 formats simultaneously. AVCHD provides premium video that can be enjoyed on large screen HDTVs and is ideal for capturing precious memories at special occasions, family vacations and other moments you want to treasure for a lifetime. MP4 is great for those moments that you want to quickly share on your social networks or store on the cloud.
Intelligent Auto Mode
Intelligent Auto mode goes a step beyond traditional auto modes by analyzing your shot and then automatically selecting the appropriate settings from ten distinct scene modes and wind noise reduction. There are 60 different combinations possible: Portrait, Baby, Tripod, Backlight, Landscape, Spotlight, Twilight, Macro, and Low light.

    Sony HDR-CX240 Reviews

HDR-CX240 Full HD Handycam Camcorder (Black) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 32.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from HDR-CX240 Handycam Camcorder Sony I have used this camera for only 15 minutes and love it. It is featherweight and goes in pant pocket. I purchased handycam for the first time as I have to go out of US on tour. So far I was a fan of full-size camcorder which I already use; it is RCA make. I kept the mode on STANDARD, shot for 15 minutes and watched the result on TV using the HDMI cable supplied; video picture was excellent. Quality is good even on street light shooting. Only minus point is it has no PAUSE function. I gave 4-star because I have used it for 15 minutes only since purchase and also I have not taken any still pictures. I would recommend it to all interested parties.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Entry level HD Camcorder excels I was very careful about doing all of the research on full HD camcorders, as I needed one for a project I am doing. The things that were a tough sell for me are no ability to add an external microphone, smaller point and shoot style battery packs and the USB only charging setup. After careful consideration though, I realized that the built in dual (very good) condenser mic setup can be fantastic and it can also be adjusted for sensitivity. Problem solved. As far as the USB only charge and small-ish battery packs, I simply got an extra battery pack and a charger. This way, I can have a pack at the ready at all times. The wide angle lens is fantastic, and this thing has the most effective image stabilization I have experienced. Ever. I recommend this compact, lightweight, extremely versatile Full 1080p/1080i 60fps machine for anyone looking to have a user friendly current format shooting camcorder. Beware of Micro SD cards that have a class of less than 10, and ones that do not have the SDHC stamp. I used a questionable one and it corrupted the files on the higher quality settings. Get a good one and you'll be fine. Lastly, the blue looks really cool, maybe a bit toyish to some, but I like it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Amazing Quality at a low price I use the camera to grab B Roll footage, while using the Sony Z1 for primary footage. The quality of the video on this small HDR is amazing and equal to the Z1 output. The picture effects are a nuisance and difficult to turn off. Same with the theme music. The manual lacks details, especially relating to the music and picture effects.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Camera for a cheaper price I have frankly been amazed with the quality of this camcorder for a great price. The last one I owned prior to purchasing this one cost almost four times as much, and yet this one delivers much better picture quality, especially in low-light, such as indoor filming without special lighting. It does great outside in fact, it handles cold-weather filming much better. It is light weight and it easy carry with to any where. There is no need special software to import onto your computer. For a camera this good for this price, I'm not complaining. Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Giant Pain in your Neck The pros are that it takes nice picture and videos, and is light weight. Now the cons. Programming this thing is ridiculous. The mouse is so small it's difficult to use. Took forever to get the basics done. As for getting your photos and videos transferred to your computer, good luck. Followed the directions that included choosing Edit/Copy. There is only Edit. The manual says to choose Send to Computer, but that choice is not under Edit or anywhere else. Should have bought the Canon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product that's user friendly! Our video class members were excited to get this camcorder. They've found it easy to use, light weight, and has a good digital zoom feature. We have no negatives for this product, great for beginning to medium level broadcasting students.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Camcorder - Great Price This camcorder was purchased to capture the activities of the holiday season. The price of the camera made the purchase possible and a degree in videography was not essential! The brilliantly colored action caught on camera is wonderful to see again and again. The unit is compact yet packed with the essential features, like the great 27x optical zoom feature that caught personal close-ups of family gestures and emotions. The Steady Shot Image Stabilzation feature provides absolutely the advantage expected allowing operation off tripod to capture realistic movement in the setting and compliments the face recognition feature. The 7 picture effects, while not essential, add a dimension to video footage for the fun and enjoyment of we viewers. This camcorder is a most utilized purchase, small enough to take everywhere, easy enough to use that even youngsters can capture creative ideas on video, and easy to transfer the video from the digital media to the computer to a video storage system or DVD to share with family and friends. Show, don't only tell the stories of your life! Why have only one?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Camcorder in it's price range. Video quality is excellent. Intuitive easy to use software. I prefer it to the Samsung and Canon camcorders in it's class.

    question

Can this camera be connected to a computer via USB and feed a live video signal AND receive power to run on the same connection, without AC supply?
    Asked by: Len W.
Don't think so. As soon as you plug it in, it goes into USB MODE and stays on that screen until cancelled. You can keep it plugged in while in normal camera mode, but it won't pass live video through the USB cable. So far as I know anyway. Maybe you can with special software, like Sony Vegas?
