OWC Dual External HDD Overview

Add 8TB of Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 storage to your compatible Windows, Mac, or Linux system with the Mercury Elite Pro Dual 8TB 2-Bay Thunderbolt RAID Array (2 x 4TB) from OWC / Other World Computing. These drives are pre-configured for RAID 0 via hardware, and the array itself is designed for creative workflows, HD video, project archives, and system backups in environments ranging from production studios to home offices. 8TB also provides you with plenty of space to store files such as music, photos, movies, and documents. When configured as RAID 0, this array provides data transfer speeds up to 400 MB/s.

Within the array are two SATA III 3.5" drive bays that each house a single 4TB 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" hard drive, each of which has a 128MB cache, for a total system cache of 256MB. Since the array ships with two drives, they can be hardware configured as RAID 0, 1, SPAN, or JBOD/Independent modes, each of which offers performance, data redundancy, or a combination of both. However, please be aware this array is preconfigured as a RAID 0 volume, which provides increased read and write speeds, but no data redundancy.

This volume will be recognized on systems running OS X 10.6.8 and later when connected via Thunderbolt or USB 3.0, OS X 10.2.8 when connected via USB 2.0, and is also compatible with Time Machine on systems running OS X 10.5. Windows compatibility includes Thunderbolt under Windows 7 SP1 or later, USB 3.0 with Windows XP or later, and USB 2.0 when running Windows 2000 or later. USB 3.0/2.0 booting is supported on compatible Windows and Mac systems, while Thunderbolt booting is only supported on Mac OS X. To help ensure a smooth operating environment, the array uses a cooling fan, and its included 100~240 VAC power supply runs at 50/60 Hz to help ensure worldwide compatibility.

Also included with the with the OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual is a 3.3' Thunderbolt cable, a 2.0' USB 3.0 Type-B to Type-A cable, a power cable, and software utilities for Windows and OS X. Protection is provided by a limited 3-year warranty that includes complimentary Level 1 data recovery for one year.

General Features
Performance and Flexibility
A fast 10 Gb/s Thunderbolt chipset unleashes the potential of this rugged external drive's dual 3.5" hard drives with sustained data rates of nearly 400 MB/s, plus the flexibility of hardware RAID 0, 1, and non-RAID modes to suit your demanding applications and workflow.
Portability
The compact and shock-resistant design has the Mercury Elite Series going places, and, it also offers two 10 Gb/s Thunderbolt ports and one 5 Gb/s USB 3.0 port for easy use with almost any system. Included are all necessary cables.
Smart Sense
A built-in sensor detects when the data cable is disconnected from a Mac or PC's native Thunderbolt or USB interface and automatically spins down the drives to conserve energy during periods of inactivity. This is helpful for notebook users who can go mobile without the need to turn it off or unplug the power cord. This function is also available through an interface card, provided the card offers hot plug capability. The LEDs and fan will remain on during disk inactivity.
