Samyang 85mm f/1.4 overview

  • 1Description

The Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical IF Lens for Fujifilm X-Mount Cameras is a compact telephoto prime lens that provides a focal length equivalence of 127.5mm when used on X-mount mirrorless digital cameras. The fast, bright f/1.4 maximum aperture is effective in low light situations and provides shallow depth of field control.

This manual focus and manual exposure lens features an internal focusing mechanism that maintains the overall lens length during focusing and does not rotate the front of the lens, making it well-suited for use with polarizers or graduated neutral density filters.

One aspherical element is incorporated into the optical design to minimize chromatic aberrations and produce imagery with a degree of sharpness and clarity. A UMC multi-coating has also been applied to lens elements to reduce lens flare and ghosting for more contrast-rich images.

Telephoto prime lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 127.5mm when used on a X-mount mirrorless digital camera.
Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and provides greater control over focusing for selective focus and shallow depth of field imagery.
One aspherical element has been integrated into the lens' design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and contribute to high overall sharpness.
UMC multi-coating minimizes lens flare and ghosting for more contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery.
Manual focus design incorporates an internal focusing mechanism that maintains the overall length of the lens when focusing.
Eight-blade rounded diaphragm produces an aesthetic out-of-focus quality that is well suited to shallow depth of field applications.

    Samyang 85mm f/1.4 reviews

85mm f/1.4 Aspherical IF Lens for Fujifilm X-Mount Cameras is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens for price point Blown away by the crisp quality and professional feel of this lens. Been desiring a telephoto prime for a while and couldn't afford the Fuji 90mm, so this fit the bill. Hugely fun for walking around the city and taking photos/videos of people, buildings, etc. Subject separation is crisp and very satisfying. I love manual focus as it forces me to think more about my photos so that hasn't been a problem for me. Only gripe is that it's slightly loose on my Fuji X-H1's mount, which from my research online seems to be a common non-issue with some third party lenses. Very happy with the purchase!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprisingly good value! Well built, but a little front heavy (to be expected). The focus ring is covered with a rubber grip and motion is well-damped and very smooth. The aperture ring moves well and the click stops are perhaps a little too firm for some but I like the positive feel of it. This is most likely the same 85mm F1.4 that Samyang sells under the Bower and Rokinon brand names for many different camera mounts. The x-mount is a non-removable extension tube that appears to be made entirely of metal, and is about 25-30mm long. Inside, there is optical ribbing intended to upset any reflections from the sensor, a very sensible approach to solving the problem. The problem is that the lens rear element has to be some distance away from the mount face, since the lens is designed for the longest flange distance (most likely Nikon). The rear element of the lens can be seen to move back and forth as the focus ring is rotated but this does not necessarily mean that the dimensions of the x-mount are low-tolerance. Numerous optical issues inside the lens will strictly dictate the exact dimension that must be maintained for best imaging across the focus range. Samyang seems to have done a very good job of this. Also, the focus ring distance markings closely correspond to the actual subject distances. A standard method to manually focus is to set the aperture to the widest (F1.4), then focus, then stop down. I noticed that between F1.4 and F2.8 there is a very slight focus shift, indicating to me that my best bet is to focus this lens at the F-stop I'll be using for the shot, if possible. However, adjusting the aperture ring does not cause any motion in the focus ring. My Fuji X-E1 has a 10x focus magnifier feature that supports this kind of focusing very well. Resolution is a main concern of anyone considering this lens, so I took three test shots at a distance of about 15ft (5 meters or so) on a tripod at ISO 400 at different F-stops to explore the sharpness. I think resolution is excellent at all F-stops, although F1.4 is very slightly soft. Flatness of field is very good at all F-stops. Samyang should be quite proud of the cost vs performance of this lens. I think this lens is an excellent value and I believe it is fully up to professional standards, at least on my Fuji X-E1.
