Yamaha P-255 overview

  • 1Description

The white P-255WH from Yamaha is an 88-key digital piano that features the company's Pure CF Sound Engine (same engine as found on the Clavinova pianos) and a GH (Graded Hammer) keyboard that together deliver a genuine piano playing experience. Source samples were taken from Yamaha's concert grand pianos resulting in an authentic grand piano sound with dynamic bass, warm mid-range and clear highs. The instrument is housed in a slim and elegant cabinet.

The piano sound reproduction features three enhancements that further support the authenticity. Key-off sampling reproduces the slight change in sound at the instant when fingers are removed from the keys with different key-off sounds produced for staccato and sostenuto playing. Sustain sampling recreates the resonance of the soundboard and strings when the damper pedal is used and is further dependent on how much the pedal is pressed down. Finally, string resonance reproduces the sound of other strings resonating when a particular note is struck.

A regular grand piano uses different-sized hammers for the different-sized strings with subsequent differing weights. The GH keyboard utilizes technology to reproduce the true "feel" of a grand piano keyboard action, with heavier touch in the lower keys, lighter touch in the higher keys, and subtle gradations of weight and response throughout. Dual amplifiers drive two built-in high-performance speakers. Ideas and performances can be shared or stored utilizing an optional USB flash drive via the rear panel USB connector. And dual headphone outputs allow for quiet student/teacher lessons or for playing duets.

    Yamaha P-255 reviews

P-255WH Digital Piano (White) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from P255B - Great portable piano I have used a P155 for many years for playing receptions etc. The P155 is a fine piano but it successor the P255B is a major upgrade. The action is great and truly is like a real grand piano in good shape. I primarily use the piano voice on the unit and it is truly an upgrade. It sounds very similar to my Yamaha Clavinova that I use at home. I also like the stronger amp and speakers in the self contained sound system in the unit. It is more than adequate for most of the art galleries that I play and when I play a larger venue, the P255B can be attached to an external sound system w/o problem. I am very pleased with the P255B. It is a great upgrade from my previous portables.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent sound and key response I have a regular piano at home, but I thought it was time to play on a digital keyboard as well. It still does not match the feel a real piano, but it comes close. I have been alternating my practice on the Yamaha and my piano. I feel I am able to learn pieces equally well on either one and the learning transfers between the two instruments. The sound samples are excellent. One nice touch is that the music stand area has a cloth surface at the bottom, so that the music is not sliding off. The only negative I know of is that many functions are hidden within the one function key. None of the crucial ones are hidden (such as voices and reverb), but if there is a fine adjustment you wish to make, you need to consult the manual to find out which function number adjusts which setting. Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It is true! It plays and sounds like a grand piano! I don't know why I waited so long to purchase my P-255B. I was thinking that I wanted a real piano, but I didn't have room for it! It was important to me that it sounded and felt like I was playing a real grand piano. This is perfect. So far, I have no complaints.
