Roland VR-3EX overview

  • 1Description

The Roland VR-3EX SD/HD A/V Mixer with USB Streaming is a live production switcher and web streaming device featuring 3 x SD HDMI/composite inputs, and an HD HDMI/component or SD composite input. The unit processes the video internally using progressive processing at SD resolution. This means the VR-3EX does not introduce interlace artifacts, which results in a cleaner output than with regular SD switchers. Four built-in frame synchronizers, one per input, allow you to support and cleanly switch input video from sources that are not gen-locked. Plus, the fourth input features a built-in scaler that allows you to work with HD resolution video. It features a scaler on the output, allowing you to upscale to HD if you require, and the built-in USB port allows you to simultaneously record your program to a Mac or PC or upload to various streaming services. This unit is well-suited for clubs, concerts, Houses of Worship, events, weddings, education, and sporting events.

The VR-3EX features a built-in Keyer for luma, chroma, and PIP keying effects. It also includes 250 transition and 11 built-in effect types. The built-in 18-channel audio mixer accepts audio embedded in the HDMI stream, the 4 x balanced XLR inputs, unbalanced analog sources via the two RCA jacks, stereo mini jacks, and the built-in microphones. You can also delay the audio by up to 4 frames to adjust the "lip" of your video. The built-in multiview screen can show your four inputs on the screen at the same time and you can transition from one camera to the next by merely touching the camera view on the monitor screen.

Video Switcher

Touch Screen
The touch-screen monitor lets the operator switch video and make settings via the on-screen touch display. You can choose to view from a four-way split input, a single out screen, or simultaneous five-way input and output.
Video Input/Output
The VR-3EX accepts HDMI, RGB component, and composite input over up to nine connectors and seamlessly switches between any four of them. Inputs and outputs are switchable using the touch-screen or pushbuttons.

Inputs 1 to 3 feature composite (RCA) or HDMI while input four accepts HDMI, RGB/Component, or S-video. Input 4 can accept 1080p input signals via the HDMI connector. Program output is available via the composite (RCA), HDMI or RGB/Component 15-pin connector. HDMI output is scalable up to 1080p, and 1920 x 1200 is available through the 15-pin connector. Additionally you can stream the program output for the web through the USB port.
High Quality Digital Signal Processing
The VR-3EX processes input video signals at SD resolution using 8-bit progressive internal processing with a color sampling rate of 4:2:2 (Y/Pb/Pr). The mixer also features audio resolution of 24-bit/48 KHz.
Frame Synchronized Inputs
Featuring one frame synchronizer per input, the VR-3EX allows you to input video from non gen-locked sources and still seamlessly switch between them.
250 transitions (wipes) are available to you to switch video from input A to input B. A transition dial, allows you to adjust the time each transition takes to move from A to B, at any interval up to 4 seconds.
Digital Effects
The VR-3EX features a selection of 11 types of video effects.
VIDEO FX list: Strobe
Color pass
The VR-3EX features a built-in keyer that allows chroma and luminance key composition, for picture-in-picture, lower 3rd, or subtitle compositing using a single key button. PinP allows various multi-screen display modes, with control over the position of the inset screen, including horizontal or vertical split screens, and even a four way split screen.
The built-in multiviewer can display all active inputs on the same screen. You can select input sources by simply touching the image you want to select on the built-in screen.
Preview Function and On-Screen Menu
The preview function allows monitoring of each of the four input sources or the output source, or the output can be overlaid on top of the four input sources on the built-in multiview monitor. Major functions can be viewed on preview screen using the convenient on-screen menu.
The VR-3EX is HDCP compliant, although you have to enable HDCP using the menu system.

Audio Mixer

Panel layout
The panel features 7 physical faders, one for main, and controls for Gain, EQ (LO/MID/HI). Pressing the SETUP button enables in-depth tuning via the touch screen.
You can select to use the embedded audio from video cameras and other devices connected using HDMI, the same as using analog sources.
Main & Aux Audio
You can mix and output audio separately from the main audio, allowing you to simultaneously use the VR-3EX as a mixer and a PA system.
Built-in stereo microphones, allow the board operator to add commentary, or the ambient crowd noise.

    Roland VR-3EX reviews

VR-3EX SD/HD A/V Mixer with USB Streaming is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! Lots of capabilities! I used it for a live event for IMAG and some computer graphics on a big screen - very easy to use. Nice having the audio control and video control in one compact mixer. Lots of capability in tweaking the audio just the way I need to with EQ, compression, and even delay to match the video if I need. Had a little trouble getting a computer signal through one of the HDMI channels - but I'm not sure it is supposed to be able to do that. I did most of this without even opening the owners manual that came with it - so it is very easy to figure out and use right out of the box. Looking forward to trying out the streaming capabilities next...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from 3 Year Update We have two of these units that we have used for more than 3 years. Normal setup is 2-3 cameras (2 wired and 1 wireless). Though the systems in themselves have been great up to this point, both units seem to develop connection issues for hdmi 4 (think loose connection), though cables are secure and stationary. Another issue that we sometimes face is loss of sound (Very seldom, but it does happen). Though both of those issues are minor and generally a quick fix, what is. BIG problem is the degradation of encoding quality for streams that last several hours. We were hoping that the last firmware update would fix this issue, but that does not seem to be the case.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly recommend I found this device to meet to every need of capturing images. I like the compactness. I suggest using a 22 inch monitor to view your sources. The monitor on the device is quite small. It is okay but prefer a large view of my images.I like the ability to stream on the fly.I recommend highly. You can not beat the price for a unity I saw that does the same thing and cost over $.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Never enough I really like the Roland products. This is a nice one but even though it has so so many features that I loved I will have to return it and wait until they come up with something more up-to-date. Only one HD input and you have to decide how to use it. Also, not even a semblance of an M/E bus.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Can't beat it for the money!! We livestream several events through the year, often with multiple feeds and cameras. The VR-3EX is VERY easy to use, setup, and haul. It has professional features and the Roland quality that you would expect. I do give it 4 out of 5 stars only due to the limit of the USB2 connection in speed. Compatible with both Mac and Windows computers, and just about every video camera out there. Output is limited to 720p, but we have never had any complaints in quality We have 2 of these now, and have not been disappointed at all

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WAY better than expectations We do A LOT of live streaming. I was a bit concerned with this unit only boasting a USB2 conncection and 480p output, but the quality (not to mention small size and easy setup) was fantastic! Broadcasts at 480p, but you can hack that by pulling from the HDMI output to 1080 Handles up to 4 cameras with ease and can be used by virtually anyone! For the price, you can not beat this mixer!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What an Awesome Find! This little device has taken our small live streaming unit to the next level. Now able to stream 4 cameras, send to output monitors, we could not asks for more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The swiss army knife of switchers The VR3EX is the Swiss Army Knife of small switchers. We are an in house media department for a large university. Thus we have student and full time staff who do a variety of production related tasks. Running a small studio is just one of those production related tasks. We bought this and a Ninja 2 to replace a PC based switcher. While we got good results with the PC based product, we found it more complex than what we needed and unable to bring in analog audio sources without additional expense and complexity. Our chief reason for looking for a replacement for the PC based switcher was we found it difficult to monitor audio accurately in real time. The Roland VR3EX handles both analog and digital audio and allows us to monitor audio in real time confidently. It also is capable of mixing both composite and HDMI video sources as well as VGA signals directly from a PC or Mac for incorporating Power Point or Keynote graphics. The HDMI audio and video output (either 1080 HD or 480SD) is sent to a ATOMOS Ninja 2 digital video recorder/monitor. Video from the Ninja 2 is then transferred to Adobe Premiere Pro. The simplicity of the system allows us to have confidence the signals are getting recorded properly and thus focus our attention getting helping the talent get the content right. We haven't tried the streaming function yet but hope to do that soon.
