Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Overview

Delivering a comfortable wide-angle field of view, the EF 28mm f/1.8 USM from Canon balances a versatile perspective with a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture for controlling depth of field and working in low-light conditions. Complementing the fast and wide design, the optical design incorporates one aspherical element to help control distortion and reduce spherical aberrations in order to achieve greater sharpness and clarity. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied to minimize surface reflection, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast when working in strong lighting. Additionally, this lens sports a ring-type USM for quick and quiet autofocus performance and full-time manual focus override.

Wide-angle prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 44.8mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light and affords control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
One aspherical element limits distortion and spherical aberration in order to realize greater sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

I bought this lens even though reviews across the internet leaned toward negative. I was in the hopes that it would have the crispness/tack sharp, colorful contrasty images that my 100mm 2.0, 85mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.4 would have. Unfortunately not. No comparison whatsoever. The images were incredibly soft, smudgy looking and lacked the powerful color- pop that we see in the other Canon primes. The colors were very very blah. I own a few Canon 'L' lenses. but images produced from the primes I've listed above, to me outshine the sharpness from the 'L' lenses I have, they're just beautiful. I was so hopeful that the 28mm would deliver and find a home in my bag, but it couldn't even come close.

Magic 28mm!!!! My most used lens and all time favorite!

I have used this lens on a Canon 5d Mark II, Canon 6D, and a Sony A7R with adapter. All pictures I took with this lens always turn out great or better than expected. It is tack sharp and on the Sony A7R it shines amazingly! It also works very well on the 6D and the 5D. This is a great lens to travel with, for Landscape, Star lit landscapes also and is a great portrait lens. The Bokeh on this lens is great too! I always have this lens in my bag!

Love it!

This lens is absolutely perfect if you cant decide between a 24 and a 35mm focal length. The focusing ring is very smooth and auto focus is just as fast as my 50mm 1.4. The colors on this lens are more vibrant than on any of my other lenses. Overall this is perfect for someone on a budget and can still make beautiful photos

This is the worst

To start off, I prefer prime lenses, so my choice of wide angles was limited and I don't have the budget for an L-series. I really wanted something fast, so I picked the lens after weeks of deliberating. I had high hopes this lens, to use it for interiors and architecture. I used it at an event and it was a big mistake. I think that I got a bad copy because there was a white milky haze surrounding the highlights in every image I took. The image quality was horrible. I felt really let down by this lens and I plan to return it soon for a refund. I don't know when I will ever buy a wide angle lens, if I ever will because using this lens was such a bad experience for me.

I use this lens often and enjoy how fast it is. This is my second one. The first one that I bought 4.5 years ago recently broke (it became loose around the focusing ring). Hoping this new one lasts longer!

I wanted a wide angle prime and was caught between the 24mm f2.8 and the 28mm f1.8. I decided to go with aperture over focal length. I think I made a good choice. This is a good lens, fast focus, sharp images. So far I am pleased with my choice. Thanks again to B&H for their help and fast delivery.

question

How does the autofocus compare with the sigma 30mm ART lens? I have a 80d and would mainly be using this to record videos of myself indoors. So, autofocus is important. I have heard autofocus can be an issue with these prime lenses. However I really like the blurred background. Any help would be appreciated.

question

Compatible with full frame?
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes, it is compatible with full frame. I use this lens on my Canon 5D and Canon 7D. The 7D has the 1.6 crop which makes the 28mm about 50mm (48.5mm). The lens performs great on both camera bodies. If you don't have a 50mm and looking for a wider lens, this is a good choice.
