Sony DSC-W800 overview

  • 1Description

The lightweight, black Sony DSC-W800 Digital Camera is a compact point and shoot that features 20.1 megapixels inside the 1/2.3" Super HAD CCD sensor, and has a professional Sony 5x optical zoom lens with a 35mm equivalent focal length of 26-130mm. A bright 2.7" Clear Photo LCD 230k-dot monitor at the back allows you to clearly view your photos and high-quality 720p HD videos.

For more zoom, a 10x digital zoom function doubles the camera's reach and Sony's SteadyShot Image Stabilization with Active mode compensates for camera shake to help provide clearer images with minimal blur and low noise, even while you stroll around. For shooting at an even wider angle, try the 360˚ Sweep Panorama, which allows you to press the shutter button and sweep your camera around to gather in your entire landscape and take many high-resolution images and automatically combine them into one photograph.

Taking pictures has never been easier. Use the camera's Easy Mode for simplifying your menu and the camera's internal guide to answer all your questions without carrying around the instruction manual. To avoid missing those smiling faces in your shots, simply turn on the Smile Shutter Technology, which takes a picture whenever a smile is detected, based on your preferences. For convenient charging, USB charging is available with the camera allowing you to charge your device right from your computer.

    Sony DSC-W800 reviews

Cyber-shot DSC-W800 Digital Camera (Black) is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 55.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good value I bought this camera for my 89 year old father to take on a cruise. He has never owned a digital camera before, so I wanted something that isn't expensive, takes decent pictures, fits in a shirt pocket and is very easy to use. This camera meets all those criteria. He just got back with lots of pictures. He had no problems figuring out how to use it and the picture quality is surprisingly good considering the price. Exactly what I was looking for. If there were an Exposure Comp button or some way to change it without diving into the menus, I would have given it 5 stars. A very good value for a simple point and shoot.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Value lacking image quality I use this as a play around back up camera. It's been a long time since I got a sub hundred dollar point and shoot. It has the full easy auto mode but surprisingly, it has a program mode, as well as manual ISO, white balance, and exposure compensation. Much like the stuff you get in more sophisticated cameras. It allows me to reduce exposure for bright skies, and makes shooting in daylight more customizable. Also, the panorama mode is a lot of fun. The battery last a long time if not used, and it recharges in about 2.5 hours. This camera has a lot of customizations. The downers are: poor image quality compared to my older cheap point and shoots I had in the past. Even with ideal lighting conditions at its highest resolution and lowest ISO, the images show noise and smearing when zoomed in. However, the images can be touched up in post processing. For example, below are 2 images shot at Dante's View in Death Valley, the first is a panorama straight out of the camera. The second is a 9 shot stitched panorama that was touched up in lightroom 5 and stiched in a Microsoft panorama editor. The image out of the camera was about 8mp, the multi image panorama was 180mp after processing and stitched. Thus, with some post processing resolution and image quality can be enhanced. Nevertheless, this little camera is fun to use, for stuff like web posting, cat pics, and personal stuff. And it's a decent value. However, this is not a camera that I would depend on for travel or serious photography.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Simple and Light Weight I needed a pint and shoot camera to replace one that I had carried with me at all times for more than 4 years. I needed a small, lightweight camera for documenting my environment, construction worksites and activities of some special interest clubs to which I belong. I have a high end DSLR so this camera was a backup and an event shooter. Many people use cell phone cameras for this purpose but I wanted a higher quality image and more flexibility for composing and making shots. The Sony Cyber-shot has proved to be the ideal solution for me. It produces highly usable images in a range of conditions and at an affordable price.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from BEWARE! No USB Cable supplied I bought these for my work, we have 7 locations that could use them. On the website it didn't say anything about a USB cable not coming with it. When they arrived, all 7 of them did not have a USB cable and now I have 2 A/C adapters, but no way to charge or hook up to a computer. B&H did try and remedy it, but sent me regular Micro-USB cables that do not work (Sony has its own size adapter). I'm sure the camera works fine if you're able to use it, but I'm not able to use it. In order to remedy this I'd have to spend more money on chargers and card readers which isn't in the budget.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great, simple camera I wanted a camera that was simple to use, but still takes a great picture and this camera was just what I was looking for. I used it for my recent trip to Aruba and all of the pictures came out great! The battery also lasted extremely long--it was a 5 day trip and I only had to charge it once! Great buy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from For Economical Reasons... The camera is as simplistic as it can be. Have the essentials to get the job done. For a low price camera SONY did well. Is more a camera for the everyday shoot. I even use it for a modeling photoshoot in a studio using direct light, mounted in a tripod and capture what I need. The autofocus is a little bit slow for my taste and have some kind of elliptical natural blur on the borders of the lens but when capture the image the center is sharp. I don't know why focus like that but as a graphic designer I can use this to my advantage when a retouch the photos on an editing software of my choice. The feature using the camera for charging the battery connecting the cable Mini/USB plug is a time saver because you don't have to get out the battery every time you need to recharge. Overall, I like it because times are tough and a SONY camera at this prices is okay with me. Like they say: The best perfume comes in small packages. This camera is for economical reasons and for those like me that like small lightweight cameras this it is... Just keep in mind to always use a tripod. I recommend buy with this camera the Revo 3 Hand Grip for Mid-Size Cameras. I did and helps for better grip and stability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Feature rich at a good price. I've had the camera for about week. It's small so I can take it with me on the go. It has many auto features, plus manual settings, too. It takes clear pictures under various lighting conditions. I use it for eBay, photos of my pet, and interesting things I see while out. I haven't used the video feature yet, but I suspect the quality will also be very good.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from L-a-a-a-g Bought W800 for wife to replace a broken Powershot. We expected better image quality than the 5 year old canon point and shoot, but images are mostly not usable due to shutter lag. My wife likes to shoot snaps of family but is not skillful at operating a camera. Despite many admonitions, she forgets that after you press shutter you must hold camera steady for about 1 sec to get a clear image. Image stabilization is useless in this situation. About 20% of photos are not smeared. Would not recommend this to any once in a while photographer.
