Sony 70-200mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

Capture more distant subjects while keeping your kit lightweight with the FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens from Sony. This full-frame lens is designed for use with mirrorless E-mount cameras where it delivers an excellent telephoto zoom range. It also uses a maximum aperture of f/4 to keep size and weight down. Incorporated into the optical design are a series of specialized elements to ensure aberrations are suppressed, this includes two extra-low dispersion elements, one super extra-low dispersion element, two advanced aspherical elements, and one aspherical element. Along with these capabilities, a Nano AR coating will help minimize the appearance of flare and ghosting.

In order to capture fast-moving subjects, the 70-200mm lens uses a dual linear motor system and internal focus mechanism to autofocus. This fast and accurate setup delivers sharp imagery, especially when combined with the built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization. For improved handling, the lens features multiple physical controls, including three focus hold buttons and a focus range limiter. Additionally, the lens has a dust- and moisture-resistant design and comes with a removable, rotating tripod collar for added stability when mounted to a tripod or monopod.

Designed for full-frame E-mount cameras, this 70-200mm zoom covers a versatile telephoto zoom range that is ideal for portraits, action, sports, and more. Also, it can be used on APS-C format cameras where it will provide a 105-300mm equivalent zoom range.
A constant f/4 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also lends greater control over focus position for shallow depth of field techniques.
Two extra-low dispersion glass elements and one Super ED element are featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
One aspherical element and two Advanced Aspherical (AA) elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
A Nano AR Coating has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
Dual linear motors and an internal focus mechanism enable fast, responsive autofocus and object tracking. The lens can also focus as close as 3.3' for close up imaging.
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
An electronic focus range limiter switch allows you constrain the usable focus range between a set limited range or full for improving focus speed, and three focus hold buttons are also featured to manually stop the autofocus at a specified point.
Dust and weather-sealed construction benefits using the lens in inclement shooting conditions.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
The lens is equipped with a removable and rotating tripod collar for added stability and reducing strain on the camera's lens mount.

    Sony 70-200mm f/4.0 reviews

    FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 88.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Sports Lens for the a6000 This is a very good sports lens for the a6000. The equivalent focal length of 104-300mm is a decent medium reach for many sports. I shoot a lot of surfing from the beach and this works fine when the tide is high and the surfers are closer to shore. It proves to be a bit short when the tide and surfers are out. Very light weight and easy to shoot hand-held though I often use on a monopod for extra stability. Tack sharp on about 80% of the frames when shooting at 11 fps though I believe the 20% unsharp frames are due to the a6000 autofocus, not the lens. Would have been nice to have an arcs-swiss foot plate vs. the screw-in mount.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rediculous I've avoided long lenses most of my life and settled for 135 as about as far as I've needed. But this lens with the A7s is sort of magical. I shoot mostly video, but even with stills I can hand hold and get razor sharp, fantastic images. It's rare to find something that you can find nothing wrong with but this one is in the ballpark. And then you switch the APS-C mode on the A7s and holy moly you have 300mm. For video the only small caveat is that you can't really pull focus. You would think Sony would be sensitive to that and put a defined focus system on their lenses but I think they're mostly appealing to photographers. But from an image standpoint this lens is wonderful.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better than expected I bought this to for some additional reach as compared to the 24-70 f4 FE lens. Works great as a full frame 70-200, and also as a 105-300 in crop mode - with the Sony A7r. I thought the f4 maximum aperture, or slow focus would bother me, they have not. My first day out, 200+ photos, only 3-4 missed focus, and this was moving kids. Not exactly sports photography, but still a challenge. The light weight of the lens, as compared to an f2.8, is great. Happy with the depth and bokeh at f4 for portraits. After a couple weeks of use, I may have to come back and update to 5 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens! I got this lens 2 weeks ago, along with the Sony A7R II. I must say, I had some high expectations for the system and they have been exceeded. I put this lens on and went to take photos at the Zoo and at the dog park. I was really impressed by the results of both shoots. Catching my dogs in stills has always been a problem. They are always running...and they run fast. I was able to catch the action flawlessly. The wonderful faces they make when they are happy was captured perfectly. At the zoo I was able to focus on animals through the bars without issues and capture their natural beauty. All around, I am happy with the results.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from worth the money vs. 40-200 f/4 for many shooters, Nice lens. Nice price point. Wish that Sony would release a 1.4X converter for it. That would still give you f5.6 at 280MM. Well lit action sports I am shooting more than f.5.6 Wish that we had some tele options for Sony, but understand why they are leaving this market for later. Not complaining as there are plenty of good lens options for most shooting styles. What's in my bag: (Voitlander 12, Batis 24, Sony 35 f1.4, Loxia 35, Sony 55, Sony 85, Sony 70-200) On my cameral most of the time is the Batis or Sony 55. Wish list: Batis 135, Sony Tele 400....and a joy stick or touch screen, two memory slots and bigger battery. Would say that it has been a very good match on my A6300.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Sharp Lens ! I am a professional photographer in transition from Nikon to Sony. I still use my Nikon equipment on certain things but I use the Sony on the majority of my shoots. If you have a Sony E-mount full frame camera ( I have the Sony A7RII) then this is the lens for you. Its a $1000.00 cheaper than the f2.8 version. This lens is sharp all the way through its focal lengths with very little if any vignetting. What little vignetting you may get is easily correctable in Photoshop. It also works great on Sony cropped sensor E-mount cameras as well (I have Sony A-6000). It seems to be made very well and the focus and zoom rings are smooth and quite. The f4 aperture works great for me when shooting portraits outside in HSS. I would highly recommend this lens and so far has served me well !!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful glass Great glass, fast focus. Absolutely crystal images. Beautiful Bokeh. Well worth the money. This is a large and heavy lens, but if compared to the Canon & Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 it is a major lightweight. For the price I wish is was also an f/2.8 instead of f/4. That would also add a lot to the weight. Zoom is internal so the length of the lens stays the same and there isn't any lens creep since it's all inside the lens body. Very glad I have this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens I put this lens on my Sony a6000 and after a dozen pictures outside of my front door I knew it was a keeper. I then took it kayaking on a lazy river and was amazed at the clarity of long distance shots that I took with autofocus from my kayak at things that I could barely see and the distraction of my boat trying to turn in the current. Most of those pictures with being in a handheld camera in a twisting boat in the gently rocking water came out amazingly good.
