A workhorse lens for events, sports, and portraiture, the Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS is a compact telephoto zoom featuring a constant f/4 maximum aperture, sophisticated G series optics, and useful AF and OSS. The smaller size, compared to an f/2.8 version, makes the lens a more portable option that is well-suited to all-day shoots and other situations where a more nimble, stabilized lens excels.
G Lens Series
  • Two extra-low dispersion glass elements and one Super ED element help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
  • One aspherical element and two Advanced Aspherical (AA) elements help suppress astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
  • A Nano AR coating has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
  • Constant f/4 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also lends greater control over focus position for shallow depth of field techniques.
  • Versatile zoom range suits working with a variety of subjects, from portraiture and events applications to landscapes and sports shooting.
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Image Stabilization, AF, and Handling
  • Dual linear motors and an internal focus mechanism enable fast, responsive autofocus and object tracking. The lens can also focus as close as 3.3' for close up imaging.
  • Focus range limiter switch allows you constrain the usable focus range between a set limited range or full for improving focus speed
  • Three focus hold buttons and an AF/MF switch is present on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds.
  • This stabilization system can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
  • Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.

Reliable lens from Sony. I use it mainly for video. Good in case you need a lighter lens than the F2. A bit slow AF, but my back is grateful about not having to carry the extra weight.

Despite the fact that it opens up to f/4 only, it can handle every situation: portrait, sport, motor sport, landscape. Picture quality and sharpness are on point.

My work is primarily in sports video and photo. In my little experience using the lens thus far and with my modest knowledge of understanding its performance it seems to be a wonderful lens. Pairs well with the a7iii of course and has been a great addition to my gear for longer distance work. Like all lenses it will perform as well as you know how to use it.

Just took this lens to Yellowstone National Park last week and this else was awesome. It allowed me to get close to wildlife off the road and capture the sites around the park.

I was excited by the small size and the light weight of this lens. Sadly, I was disappointed by the lack of sharpness it delivered in most of the photos I took. I put it on a second a7III with the same results. I watched and read lots of reviews on this lens, so was very disappointed in its failure to provide sharp images. Since then I have purchased a Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS Lens, which I am very pleased with.

Hi Stanley, Sony's commitment to customer satisfaction is our top priority. The lens does not have a weather sealing gasket on the f/4 model. However the GM f/2.8 model does have the gasket seal on its lens mount. Thank you so much for your question. And thank you for choosing Sony.

The Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 is fully compatible with the a7R. It is a full frame lens, so can be used on any full frame or APS-C size sensor E-mount cameras.

Will this lens work on the alpha 58?

Hi, the Alpha 58 uses A-mount lenses, and the sony Fe 70-200 is an E-mount lens, so I believe you would need an adapter, which Sony sells. Also, the sensor on the A58 is an APSC sensor, as opposed to a full frame sensor, so this lens would actually be closer to a 100-300 focal length because of the smaller sensor in your camera.Sometimes, using an adapter makes some functions on the lens not work .The lens is excellent by the way, but quite large and heavy.I think your best bet is to talk to a Sony representative from the Sony site but I hope I was a bit helpful.I am positive you will need an adapter, these are usually around 300$

It depends on a lot of variables, but the lens supports all modern focusing functions from the most recent cameras. It's an older lens, though, so its focusing motors aren't quite as quick and up-to-date as the latest 70-200mm lenses. All AF functions and modes will be supported but it won't be the fastest focusing lens from Sony.

The angle of view on the Sony FE 70-200mm f/4.0 OSS lens is 34-12 on a full frame sensor, and 22-8 on an APS-C sensor camera such as the A6000. For wildlife photography, I think that this particular lens will out-perform any of the 18-200mm or 55-210mm lenses, as the 70-200 has a constant f/4 aperture as opposed to lenses with variable apertures. You will also have a better telephoto range with this lens, since it will effectively be a 105-300mm lens on a camera with an APS-C sensor. In terms of lenses which are dedicated to Sony E mount systems, this will be the best lens choice.
