VariZoom CHICKENFOOT-AL overview

  • 1Description

The ChickenFoot Aluminum Monopod from VariZoom is a compact and lightweight support that offers the portability and quick setup of a conventional monopod, with the added stability of a tripod base. The tripod base is connected to the monopod section with a ball joint that allows smooth re-positioning of the monopod so you can capture any angle needed. Capable of operating as a tripod/monopod, basic handheld stabilizer, telescoping handheld boom for small cameras, or even a stand for small lights and microphones, the ChickenFoot-AL will quickly find a place in your videography toolkit.

The 4-stage aluminum design allows the unit to collapse into a very compact form and expand to an extended height of 79.2" while retaining rigidity. Twist-lock fittings provide easy and secure adjustment for on-the-go shooting. The 'chickenfoot' tripod base folds up for transport, and locks down into 3 positions for flexible configuration. It can even be removed if you wish to use the system as a traditional monopod. The adjustable rubber tripod feet twist out for leveling adjustment, and spiked feet are included for added stability on different surfaces.

You can mount your camera directly to the flat base for lightweight operation or add your own photo or video head for precise pan/tilt control. Also included with the unit are a soft padded carrying case and removable wrist strap for safe handling.

Twist locks enable quick and secure height adjustment.
Both adjustable rubber feet and spiked feet are included so you can use the monopod on various surfaces such as sand, ice, carpet or slippery floors.
The three feet fold up for transport, and fold down and lock into three positions, giving you various heights and stability.

    VariZoom CHICKENFOOT-AL reviews

ChickenFoot Aluminum Monopod is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome!!!! Coming from someone who used to onw a Manfrotto 561BHDV-1 Fluid Video Monopod/Head. This monopod is way better in every way and less expensive. First off let me say, gone is the creaking noise that plagued the Manfrotto 561bhdv, (anyone who's used one knows what i'm talking about) this one is silent when filming. Second great thing about the chicken foot is, you can lock it into a vertical position....again the Manfrotto couldn't do this either. There are a few more advantages from this monopod over many others, just read the specs to find out. Solid build quailty and amazing price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! I had used my Manfrotto fluid head monopod for years until I decided to test out the ChickenFoot. Just add a Manfrotto fluid head to it and you're good to go! While I would never leave a DSLR standing unattended on my Manfrotto monopod, the ChickenFoot's locking mechanism allows you to do so easily, doubling it as a tripod if needed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Chickenfoot is surefooted I was going to post the same observations the other two reviewers posted. The ChickenFoot is by far the most solid and stable base of any three legged pod. I have looked at others and the Chickenfoot is by far the best of its kind. It just feels very well made and the legs are solid and fold as well as lock down and out for stability better than any of the others mentioned.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Why Did The Chicken Cross The Road? To Return. I tried two of these ChickenFoot Monopods and returned each one after only a few short uses due to their inadequacy. Both suffered from the same problem: There is a small metal clip on each foot that is supposed to hold these feet in a fixed position to allow the monopod to stand. After only a few hours of use, these clips wore down at the connection site to the point that they would no longer hold in place. This rendered the feet useless in their ability to stand and because the base was no longer level, it was nearly impossible to hold the camera steady since it was off balance. I also had problems with the collapsible shaft as mentioned by another reviewer. The feet are also especially large, which makes navigating areas difficult without bumping into people, furniture, etc. Worst issue? I called customer support, which in my experience appears to be comprised of only person who occasionally answers the phone and doesn't return calls or emails on any regular basis. When I finally got a hold of this person, I had to mail a picture of the faulty clips before I was offered only one replacement, despite the monopod having three feet. I explained that this has been a recurring issue and if I were to keep the product, I would like a handful of clips to swap out as they deteriorate. This representative told me the clips are in limited supply and I could only receive one at a time and only after they broke under warranty. This low inventory made me question whether or not this is a regularly occurring problem for other users. After the second clip broke within a couple weeks, I again asked for a replacement and sent more pictures. After a full week of no response, I returned the product to B&H and purchased a Sirui. This chicken has returned from the road and is back in the pen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Work of Art! I was asked by relatives to take pictures at a large university graduation, where I don't think there will be space for a tripod. Searching through B+H I settled on this. It came today- and I was amazed- it is a work of art as well as an in credible piece of machinery. Don't know if this was a mistake, but mine came with a fluid video head, which is not listed. I had ordered a smaller tilt head, and switching them was easy, even without the directions in the carrying case. Which by the way is very wel;made, durable and attractive. Inside the case is a smaller compartment which contained the handle for the fluid head, and a small tool pouch with hex keys and the spiked feet. Looking at the instructions that were in the bottom of the case, I found out that the chickenfoot base comes off (easily) and can have a tripod head mounted on it for a hi-hat or mini-tripod! A rubber or spiked foot can also be screwed into the bottom of the monopod with the base removed. Twist locks are preferable to snap-locks, and the locks on the feet are very secure. In short, got much more than I bargained for- after the graduation will be looking for ways to use this. For reference, only budget constraints kept me from buying the CF version. Another amazing buy from B+H!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from CAVEAT EMPTOR I returned the first one of these that I ordered, since the top two sections of the monopod would not extend unless you wrestled with it for a long time. The second one I received was the same, and I had to put my full weight on it to get it to collapse back down to get it back into the package for return. The bottom two sections work fine, but the next-to-the-top section is extremely stiff, and the top section is nearly impossible to extend. Once you have wrestled it out into an extended condition, good luck getting it collapsed back. I cannot imagine how anyone could call this a usable product. If only the sections would work correctly, this could be a good product, since it is light and attractive. As it is, it is of no use. Get another product and save yourself a lot of grief.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An excellent video monopod solution I use the ChickenFoot in a variety of situations. Its small footprint and 79 max height mean that it fits and works virtually anywhere - especially in tight quarters. I've had a number of other monopods in the past, and they've always seemed to be lacking in one aspect or another. The ChickenFoot AL is solidly made and pairs well with my 701HDV head for stable, portable support. The included carrying case is a plus, too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great stable momopod I have a monofrotto monopod but the feet on it are to short so it is very unstable. I really like this monopod because of the size of the feet. I recently had a shoot and put my DSLR on the monopod and I placed it right beside a Sony Ex camera so that I had two different head shots to choose from. The monopod worked great and it is so compact I could get it right up next to my EX camera and it was stable.
