Canon MR-14EX Overview

The MR-14EX II Macro Ring Lite Flash from Canon is designed for use with Canon macro lenses for close-up photography. With a guide number 34' at ISO 100 per side, its twin tube design allows each flash tube to fire independently, or simultaneously to provide a combined guide number of 46' at ISO 100. question

I want to shoot portraits with this. Is it large enough to use the Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 lens? Or the Sigma 50 1.4 Art lens?
Asked by: Mark T.
There is a major compatibility issue with almost ANY lens here. Though it is a great flash, Canon designed it with a major shortcoming, the filter thread for attaching to the lens is only at 67mm. You're pretty much restricted to the macro lenses. I learned this the hard way, after I bought it. It won't even work with the Canon 24-70 lens or the Canon 24-105 lens. I find this really stupid from Canon. The Sigma EM-140 DG Macro Ringlight Flash for Canon will at least go to 77mm, and will work with the Sigma lens you referenced as it has a 77mm filter thread.

Is this light soft or do I need to add some type of modifier?
Asked by: Philip
The simple answer is NO. This light does not provide a soft light. However, I think with some ingenuity you could soften the light, say white cloth or tissue between the source and subject. Hope this helps
