ClearWhite CW44S2 overview

  • 1Description

The 4 x 4" White Balance System is an over-the-lens filter to help obtain proper white balance settings in-camera regardless of the light conditions you are working in. By attaining proper white balance in-camera, you can avoid potential image degradation that can occur if heavily manipulating an image's color balance during post-production.

By placing this filter over your lens and pointing at the main light source, you can create custom white balance settings that are accurate to within ±50K of completely neutral. The diffuse quality of this filter is able to account for the actual color of the light versus the color of the subject matter itself, which is often a consequence of using a camera's auto white balance settings. Additionally, this filter can be used to identify a specific lens' vignetting and illumination properties and aid you in creating an LCC (Lens Cast Correction) profile for your specific lenses.

This translucent filter measures 4 x 4" and has a circular opening of 2.5" to accommodate the use of standard diameter lenses. Even though the circular opening of the filter is 63.5mm, it is compatible with lenses with filter diameters between 25-95mm. A soft, quality fabric bag is included to protect the ClearWhite filter.

Also included with the ClearWhite System is an 18% neutral grey card, which enables you to select a precise, constant tone from which to further obtain proper color or tone balance. This 4 x 6" polystyrene card has a white backing and a non-reflective grey surface for use in a variety of lighting conditions.

    ClearWhite CW44S2 reviews

    4 x 4" White Balance System is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great help with color balance issues This filter is my secret to getting perfect color. I used to fiddle for hours processing to fine tune my color photographs. I carry this in my camera bag and use it to set the exact white balance. There are many times that auto white balance just doesn't get it right. High quality construction.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Useful tool for the control of your WB At first it's seems you have to do more things before taking a picture, but it's gonne to save you lots of time in post, you need some time to get used to it. In terms of quality, the white balance is accurate, and i take it all the time with me, and the grey card is quite useful too. Love the combinaison.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awkward to use when hand holding camera Far better color rendition than relying on AWB. Also seems better than using a selected in camera WB such as Sunny, Cloudy, etc. Most cameras seems to expect you are using reflected light from a white balance card when setting the WB. I don't know what the effect of using incident light has, but the manufacturere may be accounting for this by having you overexpose by one stop when taking the reading. Not an issue when using a tripod, but when hand holding a large telephoto lens it takes some practice. Also, my lens is a 95mm and the 4 inch card is supposed to be OK for it. However the lens hood is larger than that and the card does not mask it entirely. The larger card would have been a better choice. A standard WB card is also included in the package, but doesn't fit in the carrying pouch for the incident device. I also suggest that if you shoot RAW + JPEG that JPEG be set to standard (0,0,0). That way the RAW will look nearly identical to what you reviewed in the field and not require fussing with sliders to make the RAW look like the JPEG result.
