Manfrotto XPRO Pan-and-Tilt Head with 200PL-1... Overview

This XPRO 3-Way, Pan-and-Tilt Head from Manfrotto has a load capacity of 17.6 lb and can be attached to tripods or other support systems that feature a 3/8"-16 mount. It includes an integrated RC2 quick release cam lock and a 200PL-14 Quick Release Plate. The cam lock also features a safety catch to prevent the 200PL-14, or another compatible quick release plate from accidentally disconnecting.

Cameras, sport optics, or camcorders that are compatible with a 1/4"-20 mount can be connected to the quick release plate before securing it to the pan-and-tilt head. The head can be rotated 360°, tilted 90° forwards or 30° backwards, as well as 90° sideways for portrait orientation. Each of these three movements function independently of each other, have dedicated control handles, and can be locked into place. In addition to integrating the ability to individually lock the movements by twisting each corresponding handle's rubberized grip, the telescoping control handles for both tilt functions can also be retracted while the head is not in use for more convenient storage or transport.

To promote fast and repeatable device positioning, this XPRO 3-Way, Pan-and-Tilt Head also includes a dedicated angle scale for rotational movements that is designed for easy visibility, as well as dedicated control knobs set under the telescoping control handles that can each be rotated to apply tension control to either the backwards and forwards, or sideways tilt movements at any time.

This is a tough mount

I tried this mount with my canon and the Sigma 150-600mm lens. It held it solidly. Man I love this mount! It does everything I read and does so with ease.

Seems Well Built and Sturdy

When the pan/tilt head on my SLIK tripod gave up the ghost (plastic cracked badly) I looked for a head to replace it. This one looked good and I just happened to have a 3/8 adapter to put it on the SLIK legs. So far so good!

There is not a better tripod head, especially for landscape photography. The ease of use and ability to fine tune the composition is unmatched! I would recommend the tripod head to anyone!

I produce both video and photography. I bought this head for photography mainly, but used it on a shoot recently with a teleprompter and it worked like a champ. Not the greatest for panning and tilting (esp. tilting) but still works in a pinch.

Good for 4x5

I bought this head for a 4x5 monorail system. I find it much preferable to trying to balance 12 pounds of camera on a ball head. Very stable in any position, but tends to sag slightly at odd angles. An annoyance, but a minor one. If you have trouble tightening the knobs it is because your hands are weak. I have arthritis and its not remotely an issue; take care of your hands.

If your long lens doesn't have a tripod collar

I photograph birds and I'm continually looking for ways to reduce the weight I have to carry. I'm an older guy with a shakey left hand so this almost always includes a tripod. I had been using the Canon 7D with the 100-400 zoom and 1.4 extender. I balanced this setup on the Wimberly WH200. I bought the R7 as soon as it became available and paired it with the RF 100-400 f 5.6-8 and the compatible extender. This got me back to the same max focal length, with comparable or better image quality, plus better focus tracking options--at half the weight. But without a tripod collar, I needed a new tripod head. I was hoping to keep the weight under 1.7 lb (half the weight of the Whimberly). I tried several in this category, but found that I needed a 3-way head if I ever wanted a vertical format, and it had to be robust enough to hold the weight of the camera while I carry it. The Manfrotto XPRO 3-way meets all my criteria. It weighs 2 pounds and costs $200. The friction adjustment allows you to move the camera and have it stay in place--almost like a gimbal. Adding a long mounting plate might adjust the initial balance and improve the performance. I give it 4 stars because I still have to manage 3 knobs, which is inevitable...but means I like it but don't love it.

I would like to use a pan and tilt head with a spotting scope, so I only need two axes of movement. Can the middle part of this head be removed and replaced with the top part (i.e., remove the part with the lower handle), to make a 2-way head?
Asked by: Robert
No, the pieces are designed to go together the way that they are, I see no possibility of removing the middle piece and reassembling it differently. I think that you need to look for a 2 axis head. There are hundreds of heads out there. This is a nice head and you can independently lock each axis, so it should work for you as-if if you just leave one axis tightened up.
