Gitzo Mountaineer GT1542 Overview

The GT1542 Mountaineer Series 1 Carbon Fiber Tripod from Gitzo features Carbon eXact tubing, which includes High Modulus carbon fiber in the lower leg sections, adding to their diameters and making the tripod more rigid and stronger than its predecessor. The GT1542 has a load capacity of 39.7 lb, extends to a maximum height of 62.6", and folds down to 21.3" for transport.

The center column on the tripod can be removed for Ground Level Set, which enables the tripod to reach its lowest height of 5.9". Its four-section legs are secured with twist locks that incorporate G-lock Ultra, which has an internal O-ring to prevent dust and particles from entering the leg system. The top spider has been redesigned to add rigidity and large leg angle selectors give you more area to grip when readjusting leg angles. A ballast hook on the center column allows you to add weight to increase the tripod's stability.

Gitzo Mountaineer GT1542 Reviews

All around solid craftsmanship

After comparing the entire market, I concluded there is no such thing as a travel tripod. All quality tripods are inconvenient to travel with. The build and performance you get with this 2.8lbs compared to any 2lb travel tripod I've handled is ten fold imo, just has a longer 21'' collapsed length. If I'm really packing tight I remove GH2780 ball head (which is rock solid btw.) You buy this tripod for the appreciation of quality engineering and balance of stability, weight and size.

Perfect all around Tripod/Head combination

I paired my new Gitzo GT1542 Tripod with a RRS BH40 Ball Head. When used with my Canon 5D IV and 70-200 f/4 IS II they hit the sweet spot of excellent stability & lighter weight. Plus, for macro photography, the new Ground Set feature is a game changer. I highly recommended this Tripod/Head pairing for DSLR’s and lenses up to 300mm f/4.

Perfect height

I like the GT1542 for its weight, easy setup and collapse and mostly it is the ideal height for me being 5'5". The tripod with a ball head and the camera comes up to the perfect height at eye level. The removable center post is a real plus for getting down low to do flower photography or insects.

The best there is, hands down. The art of tripod design and manufacturing. Worth every penny.

I almost returned the tripod once I looked at how small it was. something told me not to. I have used it on several sessions and I LOVE IT. It supports my camera with a 70-200mm easily. Awesome product and light as a feather.

Carefully looked at all the competitors in this size. Worth the extra money. Very sturdy for it's size.

This is an awesome tripod -- far surpassed my expectations. It is light weight and extremely sturdy and well made. The leg logs work beautifully and it is a huge plus for me to be able to remove the center column for working low to the ground for flower photography. I couldn't be happier. Well worth the money.

Is the GT1542 heavy enough to accommodate the Wimberley WH-200 Gimbel?
Asked by: Paul
It would work, but probably feel more grounded and stable if the WH-200 were used with a slightly heavier and stiffer tripod. Depending on your needs, a series 2, 3, or 4 tripod might be slightly better, but the excellent weight-height-stiffness ratio of the Mountaineer GT1542 does make it appealing.

Can the feet be replaced with the Gitzo Bigfoot feet? If they can, how do you remove the feet?
Asked by: Geno
The feet on the 4-section 1-series cannot be changed. They're permanently glued on. Same applies to the "0" series Mountaineers. On models with thicker bottom leg sections, such as the 1-series 3-section legs, or all of the 2 and 3-series Mountaineers, you can change the feet. (spikes etc)

Where can I find replacement feet for a Gitzo GT1541 Mountaineer tripod? The Gitzo website does not list these and ebay only has Chinese after market feet which appear to have a round foot and not a conical foot.
