Gitzo Mountaineer Overview

The GT2542 Mountaineer Series 2 Carbon Fiber Tripod from Gitzo features Carbon eXact tubing, which includes High Modulus carbon fiber in the lower leg sections, adding to their diameters and making the tripod more rigid and stronger than its predecessor. The GT2542 has a load capacity of 39.7 lb, extends to a maximum height of 65.7", and folds down to 22" for transport.

The center column on the tripod can be removed for Ground Level Set, which enables the tripod to reach its lowest height of 5.9". Its four-section legs are secured with twist locks that incorporate G-lock Ultra, which has an internal O-ring to prevent dust and particles from entering the leg system. The top spider has been redesigned to add rigidity, and large leg angle selectors give you more area to grip when readjusting leg angles. A ballast hook on the center column allows you to add weight to increase the tripod's stability.

question

Can the center column be removed and inverted like the traveler models? I know it can be removed and just the base reinstalled for low shots. But I may wish to shoot with the camera suspended beneath the legs at some point. Thanks in advance.
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes, you can invert the centre column. Very useful feature.

question

I'm finding the series thing very confusing. I'm looking at a GT2542 legs. What's the difference in the series?
Asked by: Peter
The Gitzo tripods come in choice of either 3 parts per leg or 4 parts per leg. The four part legs allow for a more compact unit for traveling. As these are very sturdy units with great locking devices, the four part leg units are very sturdy and stable. I like the compactness for travel of the four part legs. The only reason, in my opinion, to get the three part leg unit is if you are using very heavy tele lenses and want the extra stability.
