The burgundy red Nagra VI 8-Channel Digital Recorder is a multi-track recorder used to capture professional-grade audio in various applications such as concerts, outdoor movie sets, and live shows.

This digital recorder features four mic inputs, two line inputs, two mix inputs, and two AES inputs. It records at a 24-bit depth and samples frequencies from 32 to 192 kHz. For saving recordings, the Nagra VI features a 120GB internal 2.5" hard disk drive with a hot-swap option for the CF card (not included). The SMPTE/EBU time code system handles the standard frame rates as well as the 23.976 fps rate for the HD format. The internal chase synchronizer allows the Nagra recorder to follow any external time code signal for post production synchronization purposes.

The 3.5" color TFT display features a resolution of 320 x 200 pixels and provides information on Audio levels. When in Menu mode the audio levels can be monitored using the LEDs on the front panel. The Nagra recorder has 2 USB 2.0 ports for creating backups on external hard drives or computers. It can store up to six internal templates with all the user selectable settings and parameters of the recorder. Included in the package are support legs, a carrying case, a shoulder strap, a lithium-ion battery pack, and a mains power supply.

Audio Inputs
Inputs 1 through 4 are equipped with NAGRA microphone pre-amplifiers. They are for dynamic and phantom +48V microphones. The remaining two analogue inputs are LINE level inputs for connection to equipment supplying a line level signal such as radio receivers. The two input connections (channels 5 + 6) double up as 2 AES inputs (A and B) when selected to digital input mode. A total of 8 channels can be recorded. There are 6 audio inputs plus a two channel mix. A total of 8 inputs assuming both AES inputs are used for 4 digital inputs.
Audio Limiter
An audio limiter can be selected for each of the 4 analog mic inputs and these can be ganged in pairs if desired.
Zipper Noise Suppression
Traditional logarithmic potentiometers are not used in this recorder. It is built with digital "encoders" because they do not suffer from "crackling" noise problems. The Nagra VI behaves in exactly the same manner as the traditional logarithmic potentiometers but with the advantage of the precision offered by digitally controlled encoder devices. This allows for better quality in all recordings.
Recording Medium and Format
The NAGRA VI records using Broadcast Wave File (BWF) format on a 120 GB internal 2.5" hard disk drive. A removable compact Flash card is used to record a copy of the audio tracks depending on the users track selections. For storage capacity, approximately 15 minutes of 8-track 48 kHz 24-bit audio can be recorded for each GB of space. The CF card can be removed and replaced while the NAGRA-VI is powered up, without causing any damage to the card or the recorder.
Channel Mixing
The recorder has the ability to mix audio from the 6 analogue inputs to a stereo mix on channels 7 + 8. Each microphone input level and L / R pan can be controlled. The mix channels can be recorded to the external drive or copied to the CF card. If channels 7 + 8 are not being used for the mix, then all 8 inputs can be used for recording (using both digital inputs). Mixing to the audio outputs during playback is also possible.
Media Verification
To ensure data integrity, the recorder can verify the read and write speeds of different media. Certain "clone" or "fake" CF cards are available on the internet and the NAGRA VI allows the user not only to verify the digital id of the CF cards but also to check the read/write capacity of these media. Poor quality, low cost cards can cause severe problems when trying to write high bit rate linear PCM audio in real time.
File Backup via 2 USB 2.0 Ports
One port is designed to connect the NAGRA VI to a computer for file transfer. The second is a "host" connection and is used for connection of an external drive (USB key, external HDD hard disk, DVD-RAM burner) or an external device such as a USB keyboard.
Time Code
The internal time code system is clocked by a crystal which is a "Stratum III" TCXO. This crystal has been artificially aged in an oven to maintain stability. The crystal offers stability better than ±4.6ppm over a period of 15 years throughout a temperature range from -4.0°F to 32°F. The NAGRA VI will handle all the standard SMPTE / EBU frame rates as well as the 23.976 fps rate for the HD format. All frame rates can be pulled "up/down" for the NTSC markets. Built with an internal chase synchronizer allows the NAGRA VI to follow any external time code signal for post production synchronization purposes.
