Dot Line DL-V/MBPRO overview

  • 1Description

The Dot Line Digital Matte Box M2 is a 15mm rod mount, swing-away matte box for lenses with 86mm or smaller filter threads. It includes top, bottom, and adjustable side flags. The side flags contract to allow additional configurations. They're each made up of an upper and lower section, and the lower section slides upwards and tightens into position by an integrated thumbscrew. The frame, flags, and rod mount are all aluminum, and the matte box is made of ABS plastic.

Two 360° rotating filter holders both support 4 x 4" and 4 x 5.6" filters. Two cowls are included for different sized lenses for keeping stray light from entering between the lens and matte box. The rod mount features a swing away capability that allows easier lens swaps, and it's adjustable in height 20mm to support different lenses.

    Dot Line DL-V/MBPRO reviews

Digital Matte Box M2 is rated 2.8 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent Mattebox, not great for DSLR I use this product with a canon DSLR on a rail mount. The mattebox is built for much bigger camera rigs, so it sits to high for use with a DSLR without rerigging my whole setup. It is the cheapest swing-open matte box out there. Works ok, but its got some play in it. It is also pretty customizable. I converted it to swing the opposite direction in just a few minutes. The filter holders are where this thing falls apart. It claims to hold 4x4 filters, I would be really really weary of doing that. Mine nearly fall out. I would not put expensive glass in here. The other problem is that removing the filter holders feels like pulling teeth. Not smooth or gentle.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from REALLY GREAT FOR THE PRICE I wanted a lighter matte box to attach to my Nikon D4 for still shoots. The Digital Matte Box M2 by Dot Line is almost (but not quite) perfect for the job. For the price, it's well made. Most of the parts are metal including the 4 flags. At this price I would expect plastic, but I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the box and they were metal! The sunshade opening is very wide and just perfect for 16 X 9 or any wide angle lens use. It even has a swing-away feature for quick lens changes, but it's just a little loose (wiggly) when you close it up. It still works okay though. The only other negative is the plastic construction of the 4 X 5.65 filter holders that are supposed to convert to 4 X 4. I own a lot of 4 X4 filters and was hoping to use them in this matte box. However, the holders are not designed very well and the way they convert to 4 X 4 doesn't hold the filter firm enough. I'm concerned that the filters will fall out at the slightest movement of the matte box. I don't own any 4 X 5.65 filters but I think they would fit better and stay in a little firmer in the plastic holder. All in all, nicely built except for the loose swing away mechanism and the plastic filter holder issue. Otherwise, I would have given it 5 stars. Ps: You'll need 2 each 15mm rods and a camera support system to be able to use this matte box.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not worth the money This may seem harsh, but I do not recommend this product if you are using glass filters. They will not stay in, they are too heavy. I thought in the reviews the other negative comments may be just people not knowing how to secure the filter...nope!! Maybe if you are using plastic filters (who does that) and are on a tight budget... But still the Dot line Matte box m2 still is not worth the money. We retuned it because we could not use it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressed! I put forth a lot of time researching what matte box I was going to buy, and it was worth it because this was the right product! I have used the Redrock Micro mattebox system for a few years, but this product is built nearly the same at less than half the cost! I am really happy with it. I bought this in combination with the Dot Line F1 follow focus for use with the Lumix GH4, and the three are great together. The actual mattebox and filter trays are made of a hard, durable plastic, and everything else is made of aluminum. It's built very solid and does not feel flimsy. The swing-away feature is nearly as good as the Redrock, and very helpful for changing lenses with ease. The swing-away mechanism has a locking position when fully closed and also offers a vertical adjustment. The flags are made of powder coated aluminum and attach easily, however, the levers which they attach to are a little finicky and can be difficult to tighten, but they still work. I was a little unsure about the fabric cowls it comes with, but I actually really like them! They do what they're supposed to do: keep light off the lens. The mattebox accepts 15mm rods seamlessly. All-together a great product choice!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Unimpressed I'll be talking about build quality, mostly because that's all a matte box really has to offer. This matte box is made out of sturdy metal and hard plastic, so I guess you can say it feels like a great product. Until you actually use it. The 4x5.6 filter trays have filter traps that allow the user to hold 4x4 filters, except it doesn't hold them at all. In fact, my 4x4 polorizer fell out nearly every time i tried to use the matte box. Good thing it didn't scratch on any of the metal or crack on the ground. The swing away system works like it should, except the pin that locks the system into position is 3/4 the size of the hole it goes into. This causes the matte box to swing back and forth and rattle like a maraca when you're using this thing. All in all, the swing away method is great and it's very customizable - allowing you to even position the matte box at whatever height you wish. The filter slots.. ob boy. First off, it's so impossible to rotate these things with ease. They rotate, but you gotta put your back into it to get them where you want them. Also, good luck getting your filter trays in the slots without spending 5 minutes to do so. Maybe i wasn't doing it right, but i'm pretty sure I was.. The trays would lock up half way in and wouldn't budge unless i REALLY put some power into it.Ok, the matte box looks great - it's definitely future proof too. It accepts mattes on the front, 4x4 AND 4x5.6 rotating filters, has a swing away system, big hole for larger thread sizes. and 4 flags that work great in my opinion. If you're looking to add a ton more weight to your rig and having unneeded troubles with a kind-of-not-so solid build quality, this matte box is for you. If your camera is in the studio on a tripod, this matte box will work just fine.
