Sigma 30mm f/1.4 overview

  • 1Description

The 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art Lens for Pentax from Sigma is a prime lens designed for Pentax APS-C format cameras. Its 35mm focal length equivalent is 45mm which places it in the category of standard focal length lenses. With its particularly fast maximum aperture of f/1.4, the lens will perform very well in low light situations and provides shallow depth of field focus. With updated optical configurations (9 elements in 8 groups), as well as rounded aperture blades, the lens delivers sharp detail and nice background bokeh. Its minimum focus distance is 11.8" (30 cm).

The lens’ optimized light distribution helps to minimize field curvature preventing a loss of image quality at the edges of photographs and its double-sided aspherical lens element minimizes spherical distortion. A rear focusing system combined with a newly developed autofocus algorithm and Hyper Sonic Motor provide smooth and accurate autofocus. Fulltime manual focus is also supported.

Fast maximum aperture of f/1.4 allows fast shutter speeds for clear low-light imaging and shallow depth of field focus.
A Hyper Sonic Autofocus Motor (HSM) offers fast, smooth and quiet autofocus.
Constructed with Thermally Stable Composite Material (TSC) which performs well in extreme temperatures, reducing the expansion and contraction of the internal lens barrel.

    Sigma 30mm f/1.4 reviews

30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art Lens for Pentax is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I just feels solid and high quality. It is solid and I love the weight. I bought the Sony A77 for I wanted a camera that felt solid in my hands with some weight. This is a great match for that camera. Sharp, love the 1.4 for low light and getting pinpoint focus. Very silent and easy to switch to manual. When you switch to manual focus it tells my A77 so I don't have to turn the camera off auto like other 3rd party lenses which is a big plus to me. The focus grip seems to be in just the correct place. Very high value for the money! I highly recommend it. It also comes with a good case. It is NOT water resistant and says so clearly in the manual. Not a problem for the cost.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty Impressed Not exactly small - in fact it is chunky, especially compared to the Pentax 31mm f/1.8 competitor. But f/1.4 performance is quite respectable (and infinitely better than the Pentax 31mm), f/2 is excellent and on par in peak center contrast with the 31mm f/1.8 @ f/2 (though that one's got better corners), and from f/2.8-8.0 sharpness is absolutely stellar and arguably the Pentax 31mm's equal. I've not yet heard the focusing action, which is quick. If the size and cost is not a detractor for you, you're unlikely to be disappointed.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Bad Purple Fringing I bought this for my Pentax after having the 35mm f/1.4 art for my Canon. I thought I would save $400 buying the 30mm instead of the 35mm. This lens is sharp even wide open. The focus is fast and accurate despite other reviews I have read before my purchase. Build quality is solid. The hood that comes with it is a little bulky but does the job. I do have one big complaint. The Purple fringing is the worst I have ever seen. It is sever f/1.4-2 after about f/3.5 it goes away. But most people are buying this lens because it is f/1.4.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb lens for Pentax APS-C system So I got this lens today. I put this to test and I have to say that the lens is simply sharp. Color rendition is superb. I am using it with Pentax K-01. Auto Focus is silent and fast (No, not OMD fast). Since my camera is mirror less, I don't have any focussing issues-period. Auto focus on Pentax K-01 using HSM works like a charm. I tried all my pictures in a 3 candle-lit environment simply to test the low light capability. No issues what so ever. Handled like a champ. One thing that I notices at f1.4 was purple fringing near very high contrast areas, such as white on black with light directed on that surface. In extreme cases, this was about .1mm thick. I removed this in Lightroom 5 with one click. Problem solved. The lens is very very sharp wide open. I tested all the way upto f2.8 and it remains very sharp. I am sure it is much sharper beyond that but I don't care beyond certain amount of sharpness. Bottom line is it is plenty sharp for most cases.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Lens with bad purple finging Being a replacement to the previous 30mm/1.4 from Sigma it is quite a pity what the engineers from Sigma did to this one: the quick and good hitting HSM drive, but then they apparently didn't keep the glass from the old 30mm/1.4 but put some new construction - and now the optics is not quite as good as the old one anymore but delivers really bad purple finging in areas of high contrast when the aperture is wide open - which is the purpose why most people (me included) buy this type of lens.In any case I personally like the 30mm focal length very much, for short-distance use on weddings or other kind of social events it has proven very useful, and I never noticed a great con versus the 35mm etc., therefore providing a nice and compact alternative.I was very sorry about it, but I had to return the lens, hoping one day Sigma will get the fringing under control one day...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It is so quiet! I'm not used to fancy lenses -- I'm sort of lagging behind the world. I was after the speed. I never use auto-focus because it is so loud and slow. I thought the lens was broken when I tested the auto-focus because it didn't make any noise ... no, it's just that quiet and it is quick. I still manually focus it though and that works very well too with the focus-peaking.
