The Heliopan 46mm Variable Gray ND Filter is a solid variable neutral density filter providing a reduction of about 1 to 6 stops. The 0.3 to 1.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, allowing you to previsualize the additional exposure length required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image.

This filter features a brass mounting ring that is painted matte black to help reduce reflections. High quality Schott glass provides optical clarity and greater contrast to help render scenes with greater fidelity and resolution. This filter does not have front threads for attaching other filters.

Variable neutral density filter allows you to dial in differing amounts of density scene to scene.

46mm Variable Gray ND Filter is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for Outdoors, Lots of Vignetting I purchased this item to use with my 35mm Summilux lens on a M Type 240 camera. The ability to shoot at f/1.4 in various levels of bright light makes this ND filter worth the fairly steep price tag. The filter is well constructed, and dialing in the amount of density in this neutral density filter is precise. On the other hand, I did wish the filter would click as I turned it, indicating each stop along the way. Instead, it just smoothly turns from end to end. Additionally, because of the physical length of the filter on the lens, it does add some fairly significant vignetting, which seems to become more notable the denser the filter becomes. As this can be removed fairly easily these days digitally, this is not a huge problem. The Leica lens hood does not fit over this filter, so that is another downside. You'll have to use another device to protect your lens, or remove the filter when not using it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good quality filter. I use this on a Leica M, so having the numerical index is a big plus, as the effect isn't seen, just metered. Very well made and smooth rotation with just the right amount of resistance. Seems to have no negative effects optically. I find Heliopan filters, although rather expensive, to be the best. I guess you get what you pay for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Answer for Large Aperture Lenses If you like to shoot wide open in the daylight, or slow your exposure for those dreamy water shots, this kind of filter is for you. It is finely constructed and easy to use though a little on the pricey side. To justify cost you can buy a larger filter and some step-down rings so that you can use it on multiple lenses if your lens sizes vary. This is an excellent piece of kit.
