The DarkCrystal HD Capture VGA Plus Video Capture Device from AVerMedia allows you to capture video from computers, medical equipment, and other devices that have HDMI or VGA. It supports a number of VESA resolutions as well HD video up to 1080p. With DirectX API support and an SDK available, the card can be used with a number of existing Windows-based applications, or custom software can be developed for use in more specialized contexts. The card is suitable for just about anything that requires bringing video onto a computer, including screen capture, digital signage, and Web streaming. In addition to the inputs, the there is a VGA output that will pass-through the incoming VGA signal.
The card uses PCI Express, and can be installed in standard and low-profile machines. In a low-profile installation, a second physical PCI-E slot is required to use the VGA output.
Note that due to copyright restrictions content that is HDCP-encrypted, such as commercial Blu-ray discs, will not be supported through the HDMI input.
Uncompressed 4:2:2 Capture Support
Via the HDMI input is possible to capture 1080p video with up to 4:2:2 chroma sub-sampling. Because HDMI provides an uncompressed signal, in some cases capturing live via this connector can provide better image quality than what a video camera is capable of recording internally -- depending on how the HDMI signal is processed before it is output
Screen Capture from Another Computer
The VGA or HDMI output from a computer can be connected to one of the inputs on this card for the purposes of screen capture. If VGA is used, the VGA pass-through on the card allows the source computer to still be connected to a monitor without requiring a second VGA output
VESA Resolution Support
In addition to supporting 1080p, 720p, and SD video resolutions, this card supports many VESA specified computer resolutions. These include: 800 x 600, 1024 x 768, 1280 x 768, 1280 x 800, 1280 x1024, 1360 x 768, 1440 x 900, and 1680 x 1050
Popular Software and API Support
The card supports DirectX 9.0c and later, DirectShow, and other APIs that provide interoperability with many third-party video applications. Additionally, the software developer's kit (SDK) supports multiple programming languages, allowing you to code custom solutions tailored to your specific application. Compatible software includes: Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder, Microsoft Expression Encoder, RealProducer, and VLC Media Player
Capture to Buffer
Allows third-party applications, such as web streaming clients, to encode the incoming video stream to the desired delivery format
Text and Graphics Overlay
Secondary content, such as logo bugs and text overlays, can be burned on top of the video image. Alpha channel is supported for graphics with transparent backgrounds
Special algorithms are used to reduce or eliminate visual artifacts resulting from interlaced video
HD and higher resolution content can be scaled to lower resolutions for SD-integration or to support web-friendly resolutions during capture
