Leupold VX-R overview

  • 1Description

The matte black 3-9x40 VX-R Patrol Riflescope from Leupold is designed for medium-range targeting and features the Leupold Index Matched Lens System and lead free, eco-friendly glass to maximize light transmission. The rugged design is bolstered by the use of DiamondCoat protective lens coatings and water and fogproof performance is ensured by the use of an argon/krypton gas mixture.

This tactical VX-R Patrol scope features a fiber optic FireDot illuminated reticle with eight variable brightness settings that illuminates an aiming dot while the rest of the reticle remains non-illuminated. This system is designed to lead your eye naturally to the center aiming point and speed target acquisition. The one-turn, extended range focus eyepiece provides a wide focus range.

This scope features a proprietary TMR (Tactical Milling Reticle), an advanced system based on miliradians (Mil-Dots). The reticle stays relatively uncluttered, but is far more flexible than standard USA or USMC Mil-Dot reticles. Mils are denoted by hash marks, not dots. Between the hash marks, smaller stadia lines denote half-mils, and on the posts' outer sections smaller markings denote 1/5 mils. The posts' thickness can also be used for range estimation and the hash marks can be used for holdovers. Reticle adjustments are in 1/10th of a mil per click.

Optical Performance

  • Magnification: 3 - 9x
  • Objective lens: 40mm diameter
  • Main tube diameter: 30mm
  • Eye relief: 4.2 - 3.7"
  • Quantum Optical System: Index matched, lead-free elements designed to maximize light transmission
  • Index Matched: different lens coatings are specified based on the lens’ index of refraction, placement, and function for maximum light transmission
  • Blackened Lens Edges: reduce unwanted glare and diffusion through the lens edges to provide better resolution, improved contrast
  • BAS (Ballistic Aiming System): takes into account the variables crucial to accurate, long-range shooting; a special ballistics indicator ring allows users to customize their power settings for their cartridge’s ballistics, then saves that setting

FireDot Duplex Illuminated Reticle

  • Duplex reticle: thick outer posts, thin crosshairs, and an illuminated center

Use and Handling

  • 1/10 mil impact point correction: finger click adjustments for windage and elevation offer absolute repeatability and dependability over a lifetime of use
  • Pop-Up Rezero Adjustments: finger click windage and elevation adjustments assure maximum adjustment range, precision and instant re-zeroing
  • 60 MOA windage/elevation adjustment range
  • Dedicated side focus parallax correction
  • Reticle illumination system with 12 brightness settings
  • FireDot Illumination: dot within the reticle illuminates with bright, sharp definition, while the rest of the reticle is non-illuminated
  • MST (Motion Sensor Technology): a single touch of the button or twist of the dial activates the illumination. The reticle will automatically switch to “stand-by mode” after five minutes of inactivity
  • One Turn, Extended Range Focus: accommodates a wider spectrum of visual acuity, even in diminishing light

    Leupold VX-R reviews

3-9x40 VX-R Patrol Riflescope (FireDot TMR Illuminated Reticle) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Right at home on my AR-15 I purchased this scope approximately 2 years ago and have put it through its paces. The glass is clear, it holds its zero, and the firedot illumination is a great feature. Very fast target aquisition on a low power with the fire dot on, even though its still at 3x. The mil dot turrets with mil crosshairs is a nice addition, it is too common to find scopes with a mix of moa and mil that make things much more confusing than necessary. Ranging is done easily with the mil reticle, and adjustments can be made fast. Very pleased with it and would purchase the same series again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent mid length scope!! I bought this scope for my DDM4V11 and could not be happier. The first thing I noticed was how well made it is and how nice the fit and finish are. I also immediately noticed how clear and vibrant the glass is. It's like looking through high definition! This scope immediately closed my groups up and the Firedot definitely makes a huge difference. Having multiple brightness settings really made a positive impact as well. Buy with confidence!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Performs perfectly Every Time I have used similar products in combat conditions, hunting conditions and in competitive use, none would stand up to the abuse I have given this scope. Rain, snow, water to about 12 feet deep, desert heat and sand and no sign of failure of any type; typical Leupold quality that you can bet you life on. It's a dandy in the game fields and the illuminated reticle is a great help when shooting in low light conditions. The lenses are clear to the edges at all power settings. I found the scope to track perfectly with the adjustments. It was easy to shoot a box by shooting a round, adjusting 10 clicks, shoot a shot and adjust 10 clicks and shoot a shot and adjust 10 clicks and shoot a shot and come back to the beginning. Overall, the best I have ever carried for its intended purpose.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect optic for an MSR Purchased the VXR Patrol for my DPMS LR308, it replaced my VX3 4.5-14x50 Boone and Crockett. The main reason for the change was wanting 'target' type adjustable turrets and a Mildot or TMR reticle. The VXR delivered all of this and more, a nice feature is that the reticle and turrets are all Mil based which makes adjustments much easier. The lack of a parallax adjustment does not appear to have made any notable impact when compared to the VX3 as making adjustments to the dial has proven more accurate than using the BDC reticle. The glass is exceptionally clear and the fire dot is very useful, especially on 3 power for quick offhand shots, eye relief is generous and the clicks are definite and repeatable. The only suggestion I could make is to add a zero stop or alternatively make the turrets lock when pushed in, pull up to adjust as one has to be wary when hunting with this scope to make sure you don't accidentally knock the turrets. Overall I could not be happier with the VXR Patrol!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent scope Have put this scope on my hunting rifle due to its light weight and adjustable turrets. Has been a great scope for hunting and target shooting. Great glass and dependable turrets.
