The Aptaris Universal XL Adjustable DSLR Cage from walimex is a height-adjustable camera cage for DSLR cameras. It protects the camera while providing multiple attachment points for included accessories such as a cold shoe and a handle, as well as available accessories. The cage is made from anodized aluminum for a smooth, corrosion resistant finish.

The cage features over two inches of height adjustment allowing you to use it with a variety of available DSLR cameras. Your camera mounts to the cage via a 1/4"-20 captive mounting screw, and two included stoppers can be mounted to the base to prevent your camera from twisting on the base. If your cameras hot shoe is vertically aligned with its mounting screw you can use the included hot shoe stabilizer to lock your camera to the cage using your cameras hot shoe, providing a second attachment point. The cage protects the camera body from the stress of attaching accessories directly to the camera. The included two-part handle attaches to the cage via rails, which can be positioned in many different configurations on the cage. The included cold-shoe adapter is likewise positionable in many different positions on the cage, providing you a wide range of flexibility in attaching accessories.

The cage attaches securely to your camera with a 1/4"-20 threaded screw to the base of the unit, which features a rubberized mounting surface.
The mounting screw rides in a channel, which provides you forward and back adjustment on the base. This allows you to adjust camera so that it presses against the removable stoppers and prevent the camera twisting on the base.
The included hot shoe stabilizer allows you to attach the cage to your camera, using your cameras hot shoe for additional stability. Your camera must have a hot shoe that vertically lines up with the threaded mounting screw on your camera's base.
The cage features multiple 1/4"-20 threaded mounting holes for attaching available accessories. Attaching accessories to the cage instead of the camera body itself protects your camera body from stress caused by the weight of the accessories.
A 3/8"-16 threaded mounting hole is included on the base of the cage, so you can attach it to a camera plate, tripod head, or the included rod module plate.
The rod module plate allows the Universal XL to interface with available Aptaris accessories that allow you to mount 15mm LWS rods, follow focus units, shoulder support rigs, and matte boxes.

Aptaris Universal XL Adjustable DSLR Cage is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 29.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice, but not compatible This cage is really beautiful--lightweight, compact, solid. The key problem that made this a deal-breaker for me is that the tripod/accessory mounting points on the bottom of the rig are not in-line with the camera's mounting hole--they are on either side of it. That means that if you're using existing accessories that must be centered on the lens (for example, rail-mounted matte box), they won't line up properly with this cage. It only works with Walimex mounts, which are offset as appropriate. If Walimex made a bottom plate adapter that re-centers the mounting holes to align with the camera mount, this would be a 5-star product in my opinion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Too good to be true I purchased this product for my 5d mkIII after thoroughly researching the market. Came down to this product vs the Wooden Camera cage, however for the price, the Walimex just cannot be beaten.Very happy with the quality of this, the fit is exceptional and it is really very adjustable. Just one small complaint, that the handle is a bit too small and doesn't have enough extra mounting points. I have replaced that with a SmallRig leather handle. Much better size, and gives an overall better balance when loading the rig up with a mic, audio recorder, and monitor. Even with the cost of another handle this price combination is FANTASTIC value for money and highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Compact Cage I purchased the Aptaris Universal XL cage after watching Caleb's review of it on dslrvideoshooter.com. This is an extremely lightweight and well-made cage. I do not mind paying this price for great quality and German manufacturing. Please note that you will have to purchase the extension accessory if you plan on using this cage with a D800 + battery grip.Below are a few photos of my setup, the monitor is 7 and the shotgun mic is a Rode NTG-2 attached to a SM3 shock mount. The monitor is mounted to the cage using a Pico plate combo kit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product I currently own a Canon 7D and plan on upgrade the camera, but have not decided which one will it be. That is the reason why I purchased this cage. Build quality is great. It is solid and once you screw down all the parts, nothing wiggles. The quick release it comes with fits perfactly onto my Manfrotto 502 head and 577 quick relase adapter. My only complaint is the lack of mounting point on top handle. I will probably get another top handle. Other than that, it is really great product and I am really satisfied.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Expensive but worth it. I purchased this because I needed a way to mount an electronic view finder on my 70D.This product is very well made and I will be able to use it for years to come. It is very adjustable and can be used on may camera models. It is also more compact and lighter than I had thought it would be.I only gave it 4 stars because I think it could be priced a little lower that being said the quality and workmanship is top notch.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great investment for DSLR shooters I've had the cage for about a month now and have been very satisfied with it. Being adjustable, I've already used it with 3 different cameras to great success. At the moment I'm shooting canon L glass on a GH4 and this cage helps balance things out. I'd say it's worth it for the ergonomic improvements alone. One thing... the Walimex plate that comes with with cage is annoying. Not a problem tho. A quick trip to the hardware store for a 1/4-20 screw with the quick release plate of your choice and problem solved!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Strong but with quirks Of all the good cages on the market for Sony A7 line this one is competitively priced. That sweet deal comes with some frustrations though. For me, they're not total dealbreakers which is why I decided to keep this. The biggest selling point is it's adaptability. Thanks to the adjustable height you can use with with just about any small to medium format camera body. It screws into the anti-twist baseplate AND the hot shoe mount very snugly. It's light, unobtrusive, and protective, on the left side. There are enough screw holes. Right now I have a third party handle and monitor attached. It looks legit. The baseplate also works with Manfrotto 501 just fine. The handle is not too small for me, just the right size actually. The downs: Could have more holes. The handle rail mount is not Nato compatible. No screw holes on the handle which is a missed opportunity. Cable stay accessory is extra $$. You cannot swap out a different baseplate due to the way it's installed to prevent twisting. As others have mentioned, the tripod plate is not center aligned to the middle of the lens when mounted. Seriously!?!? If you plan on using this with 15mm rail system your lens will not line up down the middle of the rails, forcing you to buy a $$ accessory to do just that. Such a shoddy design. Yet, in 2 - 3 years when your camera is suddenly outdated, the Walimex theoretically wouldn't be. I'm annoyed with some of the design, but I really can't find a better cage at this price point.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome, solid cage I bought this because I can use it with both my Panasonic GH4 and my Canon 5D Mark III. It's adjustable so it can fit lots of different camera models and brands. It's very well made, it looks great, it's sturdy and solid, and it's functional. The baseplate works with some manfrotto tripod heads which is a welcome bonus. Even though it is pricey for what it is (a hunk of metal with no electronics or advanced components, hence only 4 stars) I am still very happy, highly recommended. BH is awesome as always.
