Prime wide-angle lens is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and offers a 30mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/1.7 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and is also useful for controlling depth of field for selective focus applications.
Three aspherical elements help to reduce spherical aberration and distortion to produce sharp, clear imagery.
A Nano Surface Coating minimizes surface reflections throughout the entire visible spectrum for maintained contrast and color fidelity with a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
An internal focusing system, coupled with a stepping AF motor, results in fast, smooth, and precise focusing performance that is well-paired to both still shooting and movie recording.
Metal lens barrel is accentuated by a dedicated MF/AF switch and an aperture ring for more direct, intuitive operation.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

question

Other than the fact that it can be open as wide as f1.7 is the IQ, let's say around 5.6-16, which is what is most of the time used for landscapes much better than what the kit lens 14-42 delivers? In other words, inside a building it's going to be great to have 1.7, but to film a big field with horses with mountains in the background in broad daylight, how much better is it going to be than the kit lens?
Asked by: Philippe
If you shoot both lenses at the same f/stop, say f/5.6, and then look critically, the Leica DG Summilux 15mm prime lens will be better for two reasons:1.It is a prime lens. By its nature of being a lens with fewer glass elements, it will have superior sharpness, contrast and color as well as more pronounced bokeh and smaller size. 2.The build quality of the Lumix G Vario 14-42mm is good but the build quality of the Leica DG Summilux 15mm is better. A closer comparison would be the Leica DG Summilux 15mm vs the Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 II ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens B&H # PA123528A. There the image quality difference is less and the consideration comes down to do you want the mm focal range convenience of the zoom or the increased bokeh and smaller size of the prime lens. For landscapes, I would definitely prefer the Leica DG Summilux 15mm over the Lumix G Vario 14-42mm.

question

I'm having a hard time finding a follow focus ring that works with this lens as it is so small the focus ring sits under the little hood that comes out on top of the Gh4. Anyone else find a good solution to add a follow focus ring to this lens on a Gh4? Any help would be much appreciated.
Asked by: James
You might try the Zacuto Z-ZG-16 ZipGear, as it has a lower profile than other gear rings. Then for a follow focus, you could look at the Redrock Micro microFollowFocus Black. It has a flippable gear box, which would allow it to connect to a focus ring that is closer to a camera body.

question

Does this lens work in variable frame rate mode in 60p on Gh4?
Asked by: Anonymous
this would be an excellent lens for video on the GH4 and would have no effect over your ability to use variable frame rate.
