Blackmagic Design DISKMDOCK4/TB2 overview

  • 1Description

The MultiDock 2 from Blackmagic Design is a rack-mountable four disk docking station for Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 based computers. Housed in a compact 1U rackmountable chassis, it supports up to four 2.5" SATA SSDs or HDDs and features a single rear-mounted Thunderbolt 2 connection for data speeds up to 20 Gb/s. You can even stripe multiple disks together into a single fast storage volume, ideal for 4K editing, effects, and color correction work. A loop-through Thunderbolt port is provided, which lets you daisy chain up to five additional Thunderbolt devices and connect them to your computer via a single Thunderbolt cable. A software CD with disk utility software comes included.

Dock and Edit
The MultiDock 2 supports docking up to four independent 2.5" SATA SSD or HDDs so you can plug in multiple media disks and work directly from them. Simply plug in your disk and your Mac OS X or Windows computer will recognize it as a regular hard drive. The MultiDock 2 is ideal for accessing media recorded from the Blackmagic Cinema Camera and Production 4K Camera, HyperDeck SSD recorders, or any other 2.5" drive-based recorder.
Thunderbolt 2
Using Thunderbolt 2 technology, the MultiDock 2 provides fast transfer speeds to your computer at up to 20 Gb/s with a single cable connection. This speed is particularly useful when working with high-resolution Ultra HD and DCI 4K footage, or stereoscopic 3D files. The MultiDock 2 is also compatible with existing Thunderbolt 1 computers and provides a loop-through for daisy-chaining five additional Thunderbolt devices.
RAID Storage
For fast storage, the MultiDock 2 can be configured into a multi-disk RAID by using the disk utility software to "stripe" the disks into a single fast storage volume, great for 4K editing, effects, and color correction work. When used with the latest SATA 3 SSDs, you get performance over 500 MB/s.
Additional Features
  • Independent SATA 3 disk interface chip per disk slot so you never get slowdowns because of SATA bandwidth issues
  • 1 RU chassis
  • Built-in power supply
  • Drivers built-in so no additional software is needed
  • User replaceable socket connector boards in each disk slot
  • Illuminated indicator surrounding each disk slot shows when the disk is being accessed

    Blackmagic Design DISKMDOCK4/TB2 reviews

Multidock 2 is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 24.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really amazing for music production! I am a film composer and was running into a lot of issues with creating a large orchestral template of juicy sample libraries on my internal 7200 drive. I purchased this unit and a few Samsung SSDs and created a RAID configuration to stream my samples and the performance has nothing but amazing! My template on the old drive took over 20 minutes to load each time, with the new configuration it takes around three minutes! It's also nice that it has four bays so you can have serrate drives for videos, projects, etc. Really high quality, professional product for not only video work but also music production!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cheap for a Rackmount RAID kit Needed a thunderbolt RAID storage system for digital media editing. Space was an issue, but the studio had a rack mounted audio interface and power supply, so we knew it would fit. A thunderbolt 4-SSD RAID kit was $700-1500 range for pro quality, so this was a steal. Used macOS disk utility to create RAID 1 (mirrored disks so if one fails, I'm good to go). Then I plug and play (no need to restart) from the other SSD disks from ATOMOS capture cards and whatever I capture from BMD Ultrastudio Mini Recorder (Thunderbolt2). This thing writes at 450MB/S consistently. I have seen it write faster. It sits on a rack mount, saving tabletop space in a professional music studio.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellentest! I am an audio professional and used Multidock for streaming samples. It works flawless! I am extremely happy with my purchase. Only thing I didn't like is that, the product doesn't come with neither THUNDERBOLT cable nor any power cable. I strongly believe, we as customer do trust in Blackmagic's product and expect THUNDERBOLT and POWER cable should be included as a courtesy. NO issues at all regarding performance none so ever. This is a good buy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good packaging and easy to install Does what is says but I believe Blackmagic should include the thunderbolt and power cable

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Seems to work great Haven't put it through a ton of use yet, but it works perfectly out of the box for my needs. Big Pros: no fans in this one. Makes it very useful to record live mics in the same room. (Amazed at the number of these types of units with noisy fans. Not here! :-) Cons: I was suprised it didn't ship with a power cord. Little bit lame (minus 1 star). No thunderbolt cable either, but while I *hoped* for that, not even a short one is included. In their defense, they did not claim one was included.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reliable & versatile for mobile broadcast This is one of my favorite things. I use with BMD broadcast switcher and a few other BMD adapters, to record from my laptop directly into SSD drives. I can also retrieve footage from this for playback (from a different drive), while recording through the computer. That's a lot of value added on the road. On top of those two tasks, it also holds two SSDs for a RAID-1 (mirrored hard drives) configuration. It's 7 inches deep, solid construction, and fits in a shallow rackmount. It's weird to think about how footage adds up at 1-5 Gigabytes per minute of footage. I get used to using several different SSD drives throughout a workday, bouncing between clients and others doing various post production or archiving steps. This thing is handy. Gets used always. 540 mb/s write speed is my max, not that it matters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from We love our Multidock! We record to the Hyperdeck Studio from the URSA EF camera on SSD cards. Then put them in the Multidock for instant editing. No ingesting needed. The SSD cards are extremely fast. We recorded in 4K Prorez without a hitch. The dock mounts instantly and the files play back flawlessly. We edit in Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro, full HD with preview set to high quality. By striping 2 or more SSD Cards together, the multidock unit provides a fast external RAID too.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product - a bit overpriced Works as advertised. Perfect for a demanding DAW/audio or video workflow. Downsides: retail price is now almost $600, although it was a bit less at B&H. Kind of expensive for a Thunderbolt 2 device, which also doesn't come with TB cable or even a power cable! I know most of us have a bag of those already, but...come on guys!
