Sigma 50mm f/1.4 overview

  • 1Description

The Canon EF mount Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Lens is a fast standard-length prime designed to achieve high optical performance through the incorporation of both three Special Low Dispersion glass elements and one molded glass aspherical element. These elements, coupled with an advanced optical design, work to minimize sagittal coma flare and chromatic aberrations in order to provide high image sharpness and clarity. The lens' large diameter and floating system also help to correct for vignetting to ensure maintained peripheral brightness. A Super Multi Coating has been applied to lens elements, too, to reduce flare and ghosting for higher contrast and color fidelity.

A Hyper Sonic AF Motor, along with an optimized AF algorithm, produces quiet, smooth, and fast autofocus performance that benefits this lens' use in a wide variety of situations. This AF motor also permits full-time manual focusing control for refined precision by simply turning the focus ring at any time.

Sigma Global Vision - Art
As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens' is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
Molded Glass Aspherical Element
This lens has been designed using an advanced optical structure to achieve both high resolution and sharpness along with an aesthetic out-of-focus quality for greater subject separation. A molded glass aspherical element corrects for sagittal coma flare and enables full use of the fast f/1.4 maximum aperture with maintained sharpness and clarity. This design also works to minimize vignetting, color blur, and other distortions help to produce natural and pleasing bokeh for selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques. By reducing these aberrations, this lens is also well-suited to astrophotography or other situations with point-light sources due to its ability to suppress blur near the edges of the frame.
Special Low Dispersion Glass Elements
Three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements have been incorporated within the lens design to correct for axial chromatic aberration throughout the entire focusing range. This helps to ensure maintained image sharpness, clarity, and contrast regardless of focus point or aperture setting.
Large Diameter Lens
In designing the lens with a large 85.4mm diameter, and placing the widest elements within the front group, greater peripheral brightness is more easily attained when working with larger apertures. This design also lends itself to minimizing vignetting throughout the aperture range for greater clarity and detail across the image frame.
Super Multi-Layer Coating
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Floating System
By employing a floating system, the distance between glass elements is adjusted during focusing in order to limit the amount of lens movement required when shooting. This floating system helps to realize a minimum focusing distance of 1.3' with a maximum magnification of 1:5.6. Additionally, this design also contributes to high detail rendering capabilities throughout the entire focusing range.
Hyper Sonic AF Motor
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
Other Lens Features
  • A rounded nine-blade diaphragm helps to produce an attractive out-of-focus quality.
  • The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations. The outside of the lens barrel is also engraved with the year of production.
  • The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability.
  • The included lens hood is fitted with a rubber connection for a secure fit.
  • This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

    Sigma 50mm f/1.4 reviews

50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Canon EF is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 229.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Quality Control Issues While this lens delivered great optical performance, I'm not sold that Sigma can produce a long lasting product mechanically. 32 days into ownership, my diaphram fell apart and I have two blades flopping around inside the camera. It's now in a repair facility and the parts have been backordered going on a month. Not a great start into the world of Sigma lenses for me. Of the few repairs I've ever needed with Canon's bodies or lenses, CPS has always had my equipment back to me within a week or less. From now on I'll stick with Canon. Sigma is still an enthusiast company, not durable pro level gear or service in my experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great low light performance....but HEAVY I upgraded to the Sigma 1.4 when my autofocus started giving out on my Canon 50mm 1.4. The Canon 1.4 is a great lens, especially for the money. I've shot 4 events with the Sigma Art lens now and have been impressed at how well it autofocuses in the dark compared to the canon. It's also got really nice Bokeh. I've done 2 surf shoots with the Sigma Art in my SPL water housing and have been very impressed with the focus on fast moving targets as well. The only downside to this lens is that it's really, really heavy. I'm sure that's a sign of quality, but it comes in significantly heavier than any of my L series primes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best 50mm on the Market I was eagerly awaiting the release of this lens and wouldn't stop reading pre-release reviews. This lens lives up to the maximum optical quality that Sigma is promising with its new Art series. I used to use the Canon 50mm f/1.4 and even tried the 1.2. Wide open, this lens will beat either of them stopped down to f/2. The vignetting is natural and smooth, aberrations are minimal and barely noticeable and the focus is super fast and accurate. Warning, the lens is rather heavy, and might seem out of place on smaller cameras like the Rebel series, but the performance makes it all worth it. The price is absolutely unbeatable for this kind of quality!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cheaper AND better When Sigma released their 35mm Art, I took a leap of faith and bought it based on the positive press it was receiving. Afte two years and 120+ weddings, the 35mm has become my go-to photojournalism lens. So, when Sigma released their 50mm, and the press was just as glowing, I went for it without hesitation. After getting to know it, tuning it a little with the Sigma USB dock, and reviewing hundreds of images in post-production, it's clear that Sigma is doing something special - even magical - with their new global vision line. Not only is the physical quality and feel of this lens luxurious and comfortable, the image quality is second only to the famed $4k Zeiss Otus. My advice - put away any blind brand loyalty to Canon and give this lens a try.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very sharp, nice contrast I am using this lens with a Canon 5D Mark III. It is fast to focus, beautiful colors and contrast. The construction of the lens is very solid. Lens comes with a nice case and lens hood. I bought the dock, but did not have a need to use it yet. It is a bit large and heavy, but you will have that with a high quality lens. I have attached two photos, one of my 11 month old afghan hound, Bella, camera settings, 1/500 sec., f/8.0, ISO 250. The other is to show the shallow DOF, camera settings, 1/8000 sec., f/1.4,ISO 100. Both photos were centered, cropped and reduced using Lightroom. Minimum sharpening was applied.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It keeps finding a way to my camera. I have a lot of canon L glass, and this lens keeps ending up being the one I use on shoots. The only thing that I've noticed is that sometimes (in very critical moments) I miss focus when I really feel like i should have caught it. I'm going to exchange it for another copy, but honestly even with that problem, I'm going to be missing it till it gets back here. It's a great lens. Only downside I'm seeing (minus the focus thing, which I'm still debating if it's in my head or not) is that it's huge and heavy. Bigger than I expected and I carry a 70-200 all day. Get ready for a hunk of glass on your camera.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from it WAS amazing... I had and used this lens for less then 6 months before I started noticing that my shots weren't in focus. This lens is seasonal for me as I primarily shoot portraits/ Lifestyle during the summer, so the lens wasn't used often. My first shoot was amazing! Second amazing! Then it started to back focus, and then front focus and now it is all over the place... It ended up getting to the point where I went from a 90% + keep rate wide open, to less then 20%.... I'm currently hunting down my receipt to send it back to Sigma for them to take a look at it... I have heard it's a HUGE problem with this lens, and that there isn't a fix yet... SO this being said I hope Sigma fixes the issue, or provides a new lens.... Because the color and sharpness WAS perfect...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Superb but Autofocus disappoints I will echo what has already been said. Excellent, excellent value. Superb bokeh, stunning sharpness. BUT, the autofocus is not worth a darn. I can't get this to focus in low light at all and at f/1.4 without a tripod, autofocus is a must. I just made some photos of my son on my front step in midday sun. Trying to focus on his eyes was impossible; I had to pick an area of the most contrast (which were blue and white stripes on his hat) in the same plane and focus on that. Fortunately, that worked. Using autofocus indoors in available light is mostly impossible. That is my only gripe but it's a big one, enough to leave my Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 II in most circumstances.
