An external microphone jack enables high quality audio recording with manual sound level control and monitoring. An HDMI port outputs HD images to HDTVs and a USB 3.0 jack enables fast image transfer to your computer. Interval recording for time-lapse videos is supported with an output of UHD 4K resolution.

A 3.2", 1037k-dot, tilting, air-gapless, LCD monitor enables live view composition and playback viewing from a various angles and a trapezoid-shaped glass prism viewfinder with Kepler telescope-type eyepiece unit provides traditional eye-level composition. The design of the viewfinder also helps to achieve the relatively compact size of this medium format camera. The 645Z is extremely durable with an aluminum alloy chassis, magnesium alloy shell, and 76 specific weather seals to keep out moisture and dust. It is a camera designed for field as well as studio and can operate in temperatures from 14-104°F.

The camera body also features a deep set ergonomic grip, ideal for hand-held shooting, easy-to-access buttons, and a top-plate, sub-LCD screen that is angled up for easier visibility of camera information. A hot shoe mount is supported, and in addition to the tripod socket on the camera's base, a second tripod socket is located on the side of the camera for convenient and stable tripod shooting in the vertical position. Two SD slots are provided for versatile image storage and both Flucards and Eye-Fi cards are compatible for wireless image transfer. A free plug-in is available for seamless tethered shooting support in conjunction with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, along with the USB 3.0 output for fast performance.

Pentax 645Z Reviews

Still a Great value!

Although this camera has been out for several years now it still boasts great build quality, image quality and many professional features. It is larger and heavier than some newer competition as several reviewers have commented.I (on the other hand) ,did not purchase this to take cellphone images and actually enjoy the size and weight.Might be old school but still enjoy the mechanic's of photography. The larger size and weight are a small trade-off for a pro-grade camera that is essentially the feline's posterior.

Image quality and handling is great....everything I remember

...love the image quality....the ergonomics are great for a big camera like this ....the interface and features feel a bit old and dated...for instance, no wi-fi...but, it is a 7 year old camera at this point.. ..will Pentax come out with a new model? unknown but I might buy it.

Great Equipment but Needs A Left Grip

By Lehman

Most of my work is done with a tripod, but I do hand-hold some shots. I’m used to heavy cameras but this one needs a secondary grip to shoot for extended periods in hand. I found my grip from SmallRig. I do not shoot video so no hate mail. I chose this grip because of the smooth machining and well thought contouring. It feels very comfortable in my hand. The problem is that the attachment hardware is metric and the tripod mount holes in the 645z are imperial. I got it work by discarding the rosette wheel from the bracket and replaced it with an automobile grade bolt and lock washers.  The alternate mounting holes on the bracket are Imperial (go figure). The images show the results. It works great, it is stable, and feels good.

Portrait Shooters beware!

I am utterly disappointed to report that this camera does not allow only back button focus. If you are like me and shoot lots of portraits (handheld and tripod) then it is critical to be able to disable the shutter release focus. It is so frustrating that Pentax didnt allow for this, so I will be returning the camera. I did a whole portrait session trying to focus on the models eyes and recomposing only to have the camera re-find its own focus point when I hit the shutter. UGGGHHHH! Loved this camera otherwise.

The affordable camera that could, but didn’t.

Having switched (in 2014) from the slow, Mamiya Leaf Credo 60 with ordinary AF and poor high ISO capability i have found the 645z a very worthy replacement. (Relative to the Phase and not a 35mm camera) AF is significantly better, bust rate is faster, high iso ability is as good as a d850, build quality is outstanding and with the availability of legacy lenses it is extremely economical. I love this camera but after 4 years of tethered struggle, I’m going to change systems. If Pentax gave this camera a fighting chance and simply fixed the tethering issues I believe it would legitimately rule the MF roost. Please Pentax, sort it out. It’s just software!!!!

A WAY TO SEPARATE YOURSELF FROM THE PACK

I have been a full time professional commercial/promotional photographer in Maryland for the last 16 years and have used primarily nikon and then canon. I wanted to step up my image quality and bring more of a film look to my commercial and individual work without moving into a 40 grand hasselblad system that I just couldnt justify. I did a ton of research and kept coming back to the pentax 645z. It fit my budget and the reviews looked solid so I pulled the trigger on the camera body, the 55mm, 120mm macro, the 150mm and the 90mm macro. I got this entire setup for less than 15 grand which is what I would have spent on my other choice which was the hasselblad h6d-50c body cost by itself. having never used pentax before i was a little nervous about dropping this kind of money without as much as testing the camera or lenses once. The camera is gorgeous overall, laid out very well as far as dials and buttons and looks big and sturdy like a medium format camera should. I didnt want to write a review until i did a few sessions on it so here it is. First and foremost, the camera is easy to learn. After messing with it for a few hours I had the bulk of the settings and features nailed down and the camera was setup for my needs. If shooting speed is a must for you, this IS NOT the camera for you. It doesnt have that ultra fast, tight shutter speed of the canon 5d mk iv and he focusing speed is definitely slower but I expected that. The shutter sounds more like a film based shutter which has a louder, slower clunk sound to it. I love the extensive white balance settings and I love being able to store 3 separate kelvin temps to presets in the WB menu. The max shutter speed when using my profoto/multiblitz strobes is 125 which isnt great but Im usually shooting around there anyway so that doesnt bother me either. I wouldnt use this camera for studio speed shooting like I do for Under Armour ads or sessions where the model is swinging a bat or performing at high speed. I would probably go back to using the mark iv for speed. I wanted this camera for straight up image quality and thats exactly what it delivers. Im a huge fan of jpeg shooting for day to day shoots and I have NEVER seen such amazing skin tones from a digital camera EVER. The jpegs out of this setup look absolutely stunning. I love the fact that the images are now 10 x 7.5 files instead of the dslr 10 x 6.667 files. It just looks more magazine like and the extra frame real estate is something I really love using medium format. There is definitely more life like quality to the images and the file sizes are HUGE! Your looking at 60mb jpegs and 130mb raw images easily. You can take a full body shot and literally crop it into a perfect looking headshot which I was blown away by. Im used to using dual batteries in a grip setup like most of you use with your canon/nikon rigs so going back to a single battery scared me a bit and I was afraid I would have to swap out batteries multiple times during my shoots which was NOT the case. In the four sessions I shot with this camera I didnt have to change the battery once during any of the sessions and I captured at least 500 images or more each session which was impressive. As far as lenses are concerned the 120mm and the 150mm have been gold! There are not as many excellent lens choices as there are for the canon and nikon dslr bodies which hopefully changes. The 150mm is my new favorite for this camera and an absolutely needed lens for fashion, headshots and portraits. The bought a used copy of the 90mm from b & h which ended up having a loose inner glass element so I had to return it but the shots I did get to use it for looked great. Im not sure if its worth the near 5 grand its priced at but my opinion is still out on this one. The 150mm and 120mm lenses are beyond worth it. The 55mm that I ordered as a package with the camera body works great and is absolutely worth the 1 grand price tag. The great thing about the pentax lenses is that most all of the them have the same 67mm filter ring size so caps, filters, etc. are interchangeable. If you are on the fence about this camera or have been doing research forever and still trying to decide if this camera is a needed step up from your dslr setup it all depends. If you are like me and want to step up your image quality and shoot on something new and different then its worth it in every way. I was tired of the same canon 5d mk images and wanted a new spice in my rack. This camera inspires me and makes me want to shoot. I shoot professionally everyday and honestly I get bored of the same look on the same camera with the same lenses so I NEEDED something different. Will you see a difference in the image quality of your shots....yes. It wont make bad shots look good but it will push your creative ceiling higher and give you a taste of the big boy camera look without having to drop 50 grand on a hasselblad system. This is my new favorite camera, hands down!

Five stars.

Great camera! Does not fail on image quality, build quality, of ease of use, I just bought a second one! I'm writing this review to let photographers know that Capture One is now supporting RAW files from this camera. BTW: use a tripod.

Great camera to work with

Re Review by Adrianne, back button only focus is possible, see the settings in button customization. Back to the camera: I bought the 645z in Jan 2015 and have been using it as my primary camera ever since. After numerous photo trips to Africa, Iceland and Norway, where it worked fine in 40 degrees C as well as minus 34 degrees C in the arctic winter weather. Built robust and waterproof it just doesn't stop. In the arctic the camera stayed in sub zero temperatures all the time to avoid condensation. I only removed the SD card to copy files up my laptop inside the warm cabin, then returned it to the camera, in sub zero temperatures. Didn't have battery problems either. I'm considering a second 645z.

question

what is the crop factor? in other words, what is the 50mm lens equivalent in 35mm full frame (what is the normal lens)?
Asked by: Anonymous
For all Pentax 645AF2, 645AF and 645A lens you mount to this camera youll multiply the given focal length by 0.79 to calculate the 35mm-equivalent focal length. As such, a 50mm lens on the Pentax 645Z Medium Format DSLR Camera would be the equivalent of a 39.5mm lens on a 35mm film camera.

In order to mount Pentax 67 series leaf shutter lenses onto the 645Z, you will need an adapter such as the FotodioX Pro Lens Mount Adapter for Pentax 67 Lens to Pentax 645 Mount Camera B&H # FOPP645AP67. Please see the image below for reference.
