Nikon 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

Spanning wide-angle to super telephoto, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR from Nikon is an ideal single-lens solution for photographing in a wide variety of situations. Designed for DX-format cameras, this 27-450mm equivalent zoom features an advanced optical design comprising both aspherical and extra-low dispersion glasses, which help to reduce aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range for notable clarity and sharpness. A Super Integrated Coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting when working in backlit or harsh lighting conditions. Benefitting the optics is a four stop-effective VR image stabilization system, which minimizes the appearance of camera shake in order to produce sharper handheld imagery. Additionally, a Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override.

All-in-one zoom spans wide-angle to telephoto focal lengths and is designed for Nikon F-mount DX-format cameras, where it provides a 27-450mm equivalent range.
Three aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
Three extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by 4 stops to benefit shooting handheld in difficult lighting conditions.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

    Nikon 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 reviews

AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 115.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Versatile Lens I recently purchased this lens in time for a wedding as my Sigma 24mm-70mm f2.8 was just recently damaged. It was very easy to use and the clarity was on par with other Nikon lenses. I didn't need to change the lens for the entire event, and although the f is much higher than the previous lens I would have used, I supplemented the lens with a sb900 flash for the lower light situations. I did end up adjusting the ISO where I normally would not have for dynamic situations. I felt the lens was light and didn't overburden me with weight. Overall, I very much like this lens and I think it will be seeing a lot more use on my Nikon D300.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Compact Zoom Lens from Nikon Before purchasing this lens, I have owned the Nikon 18-55 mm and 55-300 mm lens combo on my Nikon D5100/7100. I have tried to replace them with Nikon's 18-300 mm f/3.5-5.6 lens but returned it because it cost more, weighed more but it did not improve image quality or focus speed. The latest 18-300 f/3.5-6.3 totally changed the picture. I got sharper picture in 200-300 mm zoom range compare to the other 2 choices and it is lighter and smaller. It also focuses faster than the Nikon 55-300 mm lens. No, this is not the best lens for the low light and action photos. But it performs very well in many other areas.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Light Version! I had the previous, heavier, version of this lens. It was a great lens but too heavy and bulky for a walk-around lens. Compared to it's predecessor, it is only slightly slower, letting in less light when fully zoomed and is missing the range finder display. According to KenRockwell.com it is just as good as the more expensive 2196 18-300mm lens without the weight. It takes very crisp photos and it about the same weight as the 18-200mm lens, thus being geared more towards it's intended purpose of being an all-in-one all-day walk around carry lens. For general use, landscape, gatherings, family, friends, events and travel, it does the job. It focuses quickly, zooms easily, has vibration reduction and is lightweight. I highly recommend this lens!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from had an opportunity to use it for a well lit indian wedding. I am a Seattle WA based event photographer covering all from weddings to community events with NIKON equipment. Recently had an opportunity to use the said lens in front of latest Nikon D500 with nikon SB910. Sony latest 128 GB xqd G series card. The pics were sharp and crisp. Felt the total weight not too overwhelming It was a well lit event to start with but as the evening turned into night the autofocus was not as efficient any more both S and GRP in single mode and worse in continuance mode. Most of my shots are in between 4 and 6.3 aperture and speed of 100 to 180th with iso of 800. For client privacy can't post any sample photos even though I feel the urge to do so.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight and versatile I upgraded from two separate lenses (Nikkor 18-55 mm and 55-300 mm lenses) and couldn't be happier! It's lightweight (and of course saves a lot of space in the camera bag). Automatic zoom and VR works great with the Nikon. Also, even if you think you don't need a zoom lens up to 300 mm, my advice is GET IT! --especially since you don't have to sacrifice your 18-55 mm (or switch camera lenses) while out on a shoot. I recently used this lens at a football game. I went from taking portraits and candids in the parking lot to taking great action shots of the game from the stadium... but it looked like I was right on the field. Great choice for the beginner and professional alike.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great all-In-One lens So far I have taken great landscapes, a few long distance bird shots and multiple portraits in our church studio. All have been extremely sharp and require very little color adjustment. The lens is light to carry and not much heavier than the 18-200mm it replaces. The VRII is wonderful and I have not had focus issues. The one negative I have is Nikon labeling this an 18-300mm lens. At 18mm it is spot on with other lenses in my possession. I have taken multiple photos on a tripod using my 70-300 and this 18-300. The photos with this lens look about like a 270mm shot with the 70-300. I do believe they are fudging on the 300mm. The focus motor is quiet and acceptably fast. I would love to give it 5 stars. It is definitely a keeper but because of the 300 mm issue I cannot rate it higher than a 4.5

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding lens for a great price I used to have the old 18-200 mm VR which after years of hard work finally had to be retired. This new version of the lens is even better. The 18-300mm range is remarkable. The lens is not heavy and it is easy to handle. The 18 mm lock is very useful when you walk long distances (as we do hiking during safaris). Forget all those complicated technical reviews. All you need is this lens for most urban and wildlife photography. Service of B&H has been predictably good. You cannot go wrong with this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent and versatile choice While a bit on the heavy side as an everyday lens, it more than makes up for the added weight with its unparalleled versatility. This makes it one of the best choices for use when you simply don't know which lens you will need next. Besides, it is still lighter than the lenses of less versatility I have used in the past. Excellent VR helps to make up for the lack of lens speed and helps tremendously when fully zoomed in. While the VR will not help with active subject movement, this will usually only be an issue in the poorest of lighting conditions where shutter speed is too low. Excellent bokeh, especially when zoomed in. Overall an excellent choice, made all the more so paralleled with the D7100 camera that I have it mated to. The combination meets and/or exceeds all my expectations.
