Explore Scientific AR102 overview

  • 1Description

The AR102 102mm Achromatic Refractor Telescope from Explore Scientific features a doublet achromatic lens system which virtually eliminates chromatic and spherical aberrations. This translates to a distortion-free viewing experience with true color rendition across the entire field of view.

The scope uses a heavy-duty 2" Crayford-style focuser. Unlike a traditional rack-and-pinion focuser, a Crayford-style uses a steel rod held tightly against the focus tube. This toothless friction system eliminates backlash and enables ultra-fine precision focusing. The combination of aberration-free optics, precision focusing and a fast f/6.5 focal ratio make this telescope ideally suited for wide-field astrophotography and astroimaging.

A mounting cradle-ring clamps over optical tube assembly (OTA), and lets the user adjust the orientation and position of the scope relative to the mount to optimize viewing comfort and balancing, while avoiding interference with other equipment. The scope is offered without a mount or tripod, but a Vixen-style dovetail plate makes it compatible with any mount head with a Vixen-style saddle.

Optical Performance

AR102 102mm f/6.5 Achromatic Refractor Telescope (OTA only) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Explorer Scientific Achromatic Refractor Explorer Scientific AR 102mm is a great telescope . My wife bought it for me for my birthday . I own many different types of telescopes, Orion 120mm, Orion Eon 80mm ed apo , Meade 102mm all refractors each one with its own personality, but for the money the Explorer offers everything one would be looking for in a telescope in performance and features. I recommend this for anyone looking for well rounded telescope. I know this, I Will be using this one quite often.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great scope I have recently purchased explore scientifics 102mm achromatic refractor. The telescope is great and has amazing optics if you can get past the chromatic aberration. I am very fond of the heavy duty dovetail ramp and the easy to adjust finder scope. The lens cap for the scope is very well built and has a right fit. However I was disappointed by the lack of a cap for the viewing side of the finder scope. Overall I love this scope and would definitely recommend to a friend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Telescope for such a small price. Impressive when fully assembled. All the parts seem to be of a good quality. Will be mounting Telescope to my Skywatcher Star Discovery Mount. Have used during the day which at first glance was quite impressive. Just waiting on a perfect night to try out. Cannot go wrong with this Telescope for the price. Great service from B&H. Received in Australia in top condition within 6 days.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fine instrument, good quality I took a long time window shopping on line. And I decided to buy first a OTA as this scope has many good features and with B&H's good service I felt this would be my best first step. It got high marks from my local Astronomy club, they tend to be fussy opinionated. It is a bit heavy for my liking, but that is part of the quality of its build. You will need to make an investment in a good mount and tripod. The 2 inch focusing is a plus as you have more options of eyepieces camera adapters. The two speed focus is really great. Yes, I am pleased with this scope.
