Sporting the large light bucket users have come to expect from a Dob, the Explore Scientific 12" f/5 Truss Tube Dobsonian Telescope gives users awe-inspiring performance at a reasonable price. Its large parabolic primary mirror is highly reflective and is engineered to correct spherical aberration which eliminates distortion across the entire field of view, especially at the edges. The large 12" aperture draws in copious amounts of light to show the minutia on the Moon and planetary surfaces, reveal deep sky objects that smaller scopes simply cannot not see, and resolve bright star clusters to their core. Its f/5 focal ratio and 10:1 dual-speed helical focuser makes this an ideal choice for imaging. The fast focal ratio enables devices to capture images in less time than slower scopes, while the unique focusing mechanism employed in the helical design gives it the ability to achieve tack-sharp focusing with zero backlash that rack-and-pinion focusers are generally unable to. This 2" focuser will accept larger eyepieces so users can enjoy a truly immersive visual experience and will ensure larger imaging sensors are completely covered.

The rocker box weighs-in at just over 15 pounds and provides a rock-steady observational platform with very low vibration. This rocker mount features high-altitude bearings with aluminum structures that allow for fine adjustment flows at high magnifications, and dual radial primary mirror fans to quickly adjust the temperature to reduce mirror distortion. Finally, the tension control handle allows users to adjust the settings allowing them to move the mount easily and smoothly by hand with minimal vibration and maintain its position when released.

  • 12" aperture
  • f/5 focal ratio
  • 1525mm focal length
  • Highly reflective mirrors increase image brightness
  • 24% secondary mirror obstruction
  • Dual radial primary mirror fans adjust the mirror temperature to reduce distortion
    • Runs on eight user-supplied AA batteries
  • Manual rocker mount design
  • High altitude bearings for a wide adjustment and travel range
  • Tension control handle allows for smoother rotation to reduce vibrations and limit over-compensation
  • Dual-speed helical
  • Accepts 2" eyepieces and accessories
  • Helical focusers use a toothless design that allows for smooth and precise focusing without backlash

12" f/5 Truss Tube Dobsonian Telescope is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good scope Everything worked great except balancing when looking straight overhead. This was an easy diy fix. You can also buy the counter weight to fix the issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fills a niche This style of scope gives the largest aperture I could handle by myself without spending a lot of money. I had none of the problems people reported with the earlier version. Everything works well without any modifications needed. Set up is easy enough, but there are a number of loose parts to keep track of. I think it will work well for the kind of use I will give it- I camp out on a hilltop and leave my scope set up all night. This is not a scope that you would take outside for a brief viewing. The set up is too cumbersome for that. The mass-produced, tube Dobs can be a little bit cheaper and require little set-up, but you would need to step down in size if you transport it and use it by yourself. The premium Dobs set up quickly and are light enough to let you get a bigger scope, but the cost is higher than I was willing to pay. This Explore Scientific is a big scope at a realistic price.
