The Atomos Ninja Star Pocket-Size ProRes Recorder & Deck is a compact, lightweight HDMI recorder which stores video to CFast cards. It records up to 1080/30p resolution video via the HDMI output from capable cameras and uses edit-ready Apple ProRes HQ, 422, or LT codecs at 10-bit with 4:2:2 color sampling. A 64GB Atomos-branded CFast card is included.

The Ninja Star offers similar recording options to Atomos Ninja monitor/recorder models, but strips away the monitor portion to create a lighter, more compact option. This is useful for users who want to keep their camera rig size manageable, or who already own an external monitor and want to add onboard ProRes recording. At only 4.6 oz, the recorder is even light enough for many quadcopter or multicopter setups.

The Ninja Star records to readily available CFast cards (generation one or later), which are highly reliable and offer fast read/write speeds. It also features time code and start/stop trigger support, an audio line-in, and an HDMI loop-through output for sending the signal to an external monitor. A battery and battery charger come included. For flexible mounting options, a mounting cheese plate is also included which provides 1/4"-20 threaded holes along the bottom and the sides. The recorder and all accessories come packed in a carry case for convenient storage and transport.

10-Bit 4:2:2 ProRes Recording

Record up to 1080p video in edit-ready 10-bit 4:2:2 Apple ProRes HQ, 422, or LT from your camera's uncompressed HDMI output, bypassing a round of internal compression and data loss.

CFast

The Ninja Star stores video to a single CFast card, generation one or later. CFast cards are small, reliable, and available in sizes up to 256GB, providing up to 2 hours and 40 minutes of Apple ProRes HQ recording. A 64GB CFast card is included, offering a read speed of 200 MB/s and a write speed of 80 MB/s.

Start/Stop Trigger

Trigger record start/stop and capture time code in sync straight from the camera with Atomos' HDMI time code trigger protocols from Sony, Canon, Panasonic, Nikon, and JVC.

Audio Line-In

Record audio direct from the camera on the two embedded digital channels or add an external mic via the audio line-in for an extra two channels of analog audio.

Micro HDMI Input with Loop-Output

The Ninja Star's Micro HDMI input allows you to connect cameras with an HDMI output. A Micro HDMI loop-output is provided for viewing sending the signal to an additional device, such as an external monitor.

Additional Features

  • Battery lasts up to 5 hours
  • Lightweight at only 4.6 oz
  • Large, colored control buttons
  • Audio level, battery life, and recording time indicators
  • Mounting cheese plate with 1/4"-20 threaded holes along the bottom and the sides for flexible mounting options

question

Why isn't timecode data being recording from Canon C100 Mk II?I've made sure that the C100 Mk II is set to send Timecode information, but it doesn't seem to be registering on the Ninja Star. The files still say 10 Sep. 2010 as the date recorded.
Asked by: Greg W.
Hi,Time code is used for the duration of the clip and not for the time/data metadata of the File.

question

Is it possible to use this device with a smartphone? I guessing no, but looking for an external monitor etc for HTC 10. Thanks
Asked by: Laura M.
Hey - you cannot use this with any smartphone app. Your best bet would be if your smartphone can output the display over HDMI. Furthermore, if you're looking for an external monitor for your smartphone, then this definitely isn't for you since it's just a recorder without a screen.

question

If using with a camera capable of recording 4K, what happens when shooting in 4K mode? Do you get an error message, does it down convert to 1080, or does it only record to the on-camera card? Or none of the above?
Asked by: Todd T.
Your camera will capture 4K on your internal card and this should down convert to 1080.

question

Can I use whit camera Sony HVR Z1U?
Asked by: Jose C.
While the Sony Z1U is a great camcorder, it was released before Sony starting putting Clean, Uncompressed HDMI outputs on their camcorders. It will not work with the Ninja Star I'm afraid. For an HDV Camcorder like the Z1U we have the Datavideo DN-60. This unit will record an HDV/DV file directly on to a Compact Flash Card through Firewire.

question

Hey quick question, will this work with a Canon Rebel T5 (not T5i)?
Asked by: Detwann J.
Sorry, no it will not. In order to use an external recorder, you need a camera with an clean HDMI output. Unfortunately the only Canon cameras that do that are the 7D Mark II and the 5D Mark III.
