Rokinon 12mm T2.2 Cine Overview

The Rokinon 12mm T2.2 Cine Lens for Sony E Mount is a wide-angle lens optimized for digital cinematography. The lens produces an image circle that will cover APS-C sized sensors or smaller. For use with a follow focus unit, the focus and aperture rings feature industry-standard 0.8 pitch gearing. The aperture ring is also de-clicked to allow for smooth iris pulls while shooting. With an angle of view of 98.9°, the lens is well-suited for shooting landscapes, architecture, and for use in tight interior locations. It's fast maximum aperture of T2.2 also makes the lens suitable for shooting low-light conditions. Three extra-low dispersion elements and two aspherical elements have been incorporated into the optical design to minimize chromatic aberrations and distortion in order to produce sharper images. Additionally, a Nano Coating System (NCS) has been applied to the lens elements in order to reduce surface reflections and prevent lens flare and ghosting for improved light transmission and more contrast-rich imagery. A bayonet-mount lens hood and lens pouch come included with the lens.

I've only used this lens a handful of times so far when I need a wide shot but I'm pleased with what I've been seeing so far.

Really enjoying this lens. Not as tack sharp as some of my photo lenses but just right for cine IMHO. Using on a BMPCC 4 with great results. Smooth ring operation with a nice throw. Simple and effective.

question

Will this work well on the a7?
Asked by: Laura
The mount will fit, but this lens is meant for a crop sensor. If you put this on the a7, you will get some mean vignetting. The longer Rokinons will however work well with the a7 line. I would suggest going to a 24mm Rokinon Cine.

I'm confused. If this 12mm lens is Sony E mount APSC/Super 35 sized, why does it list mm conversions to 18mm?
Asked by: John
While the Rokinon 12mm T2.2 Cine Lens for Sony E Mount is 12mm glass. When used with a crop sensor camera there is a slight zoom of about 1.5x. So the true view would be 18mm.

question

Will this work on the a7 for sharp night time (low light) outdoor photos?
Asked by: Laura
The Sony a7 is a full-frame camera while this Rokinon 12mm T2.2 Cine Lens for Sony E Mount is for smaller APS-C sensors. If you use it straight on the camera in full frame mode, you will see severe darkening of the corners or vignetting. However, Sony is aware of this and has a APS-C mode that is selectable in the camera so in the end, you can use this lens on the a7. It will deliver sharp images, day or night. Just be aware you are cropping the image so you will not get as many MP's out of the image like in full-frame mode. Correctly handled, the difference in image quality is not considered an issue by most pros.

Only comparing picture quality (when the aperture is wide open or at lets say T4), Is this the right lens or the 16mm cine? is the 16 worth the extra $70.00

Does anyone know if the 12mm t2.2 is true to it's focal length on the sonya6500 because in the description of the lens it says 18mm(35mm) ?

I know this lens is a manual only lens. However, I would like to know if I use it on my Lumix G7 can I still get focus peaking working if I use this lens with it?
Asked by: Samantha
I don't have the G7 but focus peaking works in camera. The camera sees hard lines and uses them to determine focus, it had no communication with the lens to do this. Hope that helps! Should work fine.
