Polsen VM-180M overview

  • 1Description

Providing professional-sounding audio to your DSLR, video camera, or audio recorder, the VM-180M DSLR/Video Microphone from Polsen is a compact condenser microphone with a selectable cardioid or supercardioid polar pattern that connects to your recording device of choice with its 8" long, 3.5mm mini-plug cable. A 3.5mm microphone input provides additional flexibility and miking options while only sending one connection to your recording device.

The microphone input allows you to connect a second microphone (not included) to your set up without the need for a mixer or summing device. This additional functionality provides you with a wide range of recording options, including adding a lavalier microphone for close up recording of a subject while the VM-180M handles ambient tracking duties. With a 2 mic set up, each channel of audio is routed to a discrete channel (right or left) upon reaching your recording device.

You can easily monitor your audio via the microphone's built-in 3.5mm headphone output, so you always know exactly what is being sent to your recorder. Its integrated shockmount helps prevent the microphone from picking up handling noise, and its shoe mount with 1/4"-20 socket allows you to attach it to your camera or mount it on a boom pole. A selectable low-cut filter at 300 Hz helps eliminate low rumble and wind noise that can plague many location recordings, while the selectable 10 dB boost is ideal for use when trying to capture quieter subjects.

A foam windscreen is included to help eliminate wind noise from your recordings. The mic is powered by a single AA battery (included) for up to 100 hours.

    Polsen VM-180M reviews

    VM-180M DSLR/Video Microphone is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't let the size fool you! This microphone is perfect for me. I mainly take photographs with my d800 that I bought from B&H, but when I did videos of my son playing the piano at his recitals the sound was not good enough from the d800. The VM-180M did the trick and now I get sound on all my videos. I like the size also, very compact and I need that because I have a lot of equipment to haul around. Don't hesitate to buy this microphone, it sounds great!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Microphone without errors Having used other, higher and lower tier, microphones I can say that the VM-180M by Polsen is exeptionally great comparing the price to quality. It is easy to use and it never fails. If you are someone in need of a great microphone without willing to spend $, this is your microphone! Highly recommened.PS: Not a 5-star because the company could include a dead-cat.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor quality I bought this mic as a hotshoe on my DSLR for running and gunning but have been sorely disappointed. The levels coming from the microphone are so low that even with the +10db switched to on, it just sounds like white noise when you record dialogue unless you are literally eating the microphone. Even then it's questionable. I have a 5D mkii with magic lantern and although I know some of you might be thinking, oh but the recording capability of the 5d2 isn't amazing because the inbuilt amp can add noise, even when connected to my macbook pro recording audio directly, it is so quiet you basically have to yell into it to get good audio. I could have a defective mic, or maybe I'm not using it correctly, but for all regular usage scenarios I've run it through it's been terrible. Even if it's on sale, don't bother. There is not even a light to let you know you have turned it on which means you often forget to switch the thing off.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good features, mediocre build quality ... There are two important features that I consider are very useful with this model. One is headphone jack that allows me to monitor the sound being recorded. For all their crowing about how great their cameras are for video recording, Canon in their infinite wisdom did not put a headphone jack in their mid-level 60D and 70D DSLRs. For that I have to pony up for 5D mkIII. One of the main reason I got Canon 70D was to use their dual pixel, continuous AF with touch screen focus. I was somewhat frustrated by Canon's omission as I am mostly a Nikon user and my D7100 and D800 has the headphone jacks. With this mike, I can monitor the sound with the video. Secondly, this mike has an extra mike input in case I wanted to connect a second mike or lavalier mike for close up recording. The sound quality is noticeably better than built-in DSLR microphone and normal and tele settings genuinely are useful. The cons include middling build quality for the price, especially the flimsy shoe mount, no on-off indicator light, and no storage pouch. 5 stars for features and performance, 3 stars for build quality and lack of storage pouch.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Mic, buen microfono portatil Very good product the quality is good, and the sound is nice too. it has many options like gain, and it has tele mode and normal modo (Cardio - super cardio) other good thing it is stereo, I have some camcorder that when it is mono it won't work, that is one thing to keep in mind. PD: this product was sent to me to free to make a review in my channel gabaktech

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent Compact and Light Weight on Camera Microphone Went looking for a decent quality microphone to rig up to my new iOgrapher iPhone 6+ case and found this through the B&H deal zone daily deal. It was a good price so I thought I'd give it a try. First impressions: Light, cheap, cheaply made, and what the heck are all these spare rubber bands for? So let me clarify - compared to Rode and even the diminutive Sennheiser MKE-400, this microphone is light - both in the good way and in the way that feels cheap when you first pick it up. However, for the price, it feels about the way that I was expecting. It's smaller than most on-camera microphones, which is great for the iOgrapher, because there's not a ton of room on this very narrow case, but the fit and finish isn't nearly up to the competition. Even the cold shoe mount just doesn't feel like it fits right on my gear. Sure, it fits, but it's not as good as the price-point should be. Why can't more manufacturers just use a metal or metal reinforced mount? In the box it comes with a plethora of extra, super-small rubber bands that are in case you lose one of the many shock mount bands. Nice that extras are included but I think I lost them while bringing them out of the box. Quality is good - not great. Definitely above what I would have expected for the price but again not as good as some of the larger competition. Nothing major, just not as rich sounding as the competition. Now, for the pluses, there are some nice features on this microphone, such as a headphone jack and a jack that allows a second microphone to be plugged in, such as in the case of the lab, but, honestly, a second microphone just seems silly when for a small bit more I could have bought a microphone that eliminated the need for another microphone. Headset jack is nice, but most cameras these days have something that will work and at the consumer level hearing it straight to my ear is nearly as good. So would I buy it again? Absolutely, for the price it's a good, small, lightweight microphone that produces quality consistent with expectations. I would not put this on my Cinema camera but for an iPhone or lightweight application it's good enough.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great microphone but... The rubber bands holding the microphone to the shock mount keeps on ripping. The tips also fly off. I found an alternative method to hold it up - solder four holes on each side next to the rubber band tips. Then tie with fishing rod string to the mount!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Mic, works as intended Very simple to set up. We ran a wireless into the input and mixed the sound. Everything went great. Battery seems to last a good long while. Only reservation is that it does not seem like it is very durable. I have not had a problem with it. It just feels like I need to treat it carefully. I prefer sturdy things that I do not have to treat nice. haha
