The ToughArmor MB996SP-6SB 6 x 2.5" SATA HDD/SSD Backplane Cage from Icy Dock is an enclosure that fits six 7 to 9.5mm 2.5" SATA hard drives or SSD's in a single 5.25" bay. The enclosure can be used for high performance RAID applications such as building dual RAID 5 arrays or connecting four high performance drives in RAID 0 plus RAID 1 array for back up, all in a single 5.25" device bay. The enclosure is commercially designed for medical and military systems, media servers, IPCs, HTPC, and all-in-one computers, approved and used by Tier 1 companies.

It is useful for powerful small servers, gaming rigs, home servers or HTPC's due to its high capacity and space saving design. The backplane cage is also suitable for users who need non-RAID JBOD storage and save different contents in different drive locations. The device bay supports a wide range of applications. It is capable of holding up in various environments, with a heavy duty, full metal construction. The full metal design is also suitable for industrial and medical devices that may require a flammability rating, as the full metal material is considered to already comply with flammability requirements. In addition, the metal material used grants heat dissipation transfer from the hard drives to the backplane cage.

Anti-Vibration Technology (AVT) and EMI grounding are used to ensure a stable environment for the hard drives or SSD's used, improving reliability. The bay brings more utility to your hard drives or SSDs, as LED's are installed in the front of the mobile rack to provide individual drive status information, at all times. Active Power Technology (APT) allows each LED and the cooling fan to be active only when a hard drive is inserted into the same bay of the enclosure.

A 40mm cooling fan is placed directly at the center of the rear panel, providing equivalent airflow throughout the entire cage. The fan speed can be adjusted from higher speed or can be completely turned off for silent operation in various situations with the use of a 3-Mode Fan Speed Control. Using the EZ Slide Micro Trays makes drive interchangeability and maintenance completely hassle free. For drive security, the eagle-hook lock system on the tray makes sure that your hard drives will not eject when not needed. The trays can accommodate hard drives and SSDs up to 7 to 9.5mm in height.

What do i need to purchase to use this as a standalone unit?

As your laptop does not have external sata or SAS interfaces, only Thunderbolt or USB, there would need to be a computer in between to manage the connection as well as disperse the drives properly into your laptop's file system. A computer basically, or file/drive server. This server would interface to each physical drive via SATA and provide connectivity via USB or some other consumer level connection method. This box cannot serve these drives alone without an actual computer with processor to handle traffic management and device connectivity.

can it work with any PC hard drive?

It's platform agnostic. You can use any 2.5 SSD drive that will work with your OS.
